FACULTY OF BEHAVIOURAL, MANAGEMENT, AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

OVERVIEWThe Faculty of Behavioural, Management, and Social Sciences has 4,000 students and 280 academic staff. On 1st May 2014 the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences and Faculty of Management and Governance merged in a strategic decision to consolidate and strengthen activity in the social sciences in line with the human touch dimension of the University’s vision. The newly merged Faculty plays a vital role in driving forward collaboration and cooperation between technology and social science in order to uniquely address societal programs.

The Faculty is organised into seven academic disciplines:

Business AdministrationTwente is the only one of the 3TU with a European (EPAS) accreditation for its business administration programme, both at bachelor and at master level, and has a well evaluated (2010) national leading and internationally recognized research program on Innovation & Entrepreneurship. The UT-Business Administration group is uniquely positioned in the Netherlands to provide answers to major challenges induced by new technological developments and demands for increasing organizational performance.

Communication ScienceTwo kinds of relationships between communication science and technology and innovation are addressed by the group at Twente (1) communication by means of (newer) technologies: the role and impact of ICT in communication practice, (2) communication about technology and innovations, including the appropriation and implementation of technology.

Educational SciencesThe educational research in the Faculty can play a role to close the gap between educational research and educational practice, by linking its existing research into adaptive and interactive (ICT-supported) environments for education and training, educational assessment, teacher training and professional development, and human resources development (HRD) directly to schools. Moreover, specificallyforscienceeducation, other faculties can be involved to bring recent developments in science to educational practice.

Health SciencesThe last decades have been characterised by global trends such as population growth, aging, and technological innovation. At the same time populations are ageing as a result of low fertility, low immigration, and longer lives. Technological and technical innovations are changing the healthcare landscape, sometimes, but not always, driven by consumer demands. The importance of relevant, cutting-edge and innovative research which intersects and takes advantage of technology is recognised by the University and the Faculty plays a part in developing and collaborating with technology to this end.

PhilosophyResearch and education of the department focus on the philosophy and ethics of technology and engineering science. The department houses a master programme in the Philosophy of Science, Technology, and Society. Research is concentrated on three themes: ethics of technology, philosophy of human-technology relations and philosophy of science in practice.

PsychologySpecificexpertiseinPsychologyatTwenteistouseadvanced technologies to study human behaviour and its determinants as well as consequences. Parallel, this knowledge is used for developing technology-based, highly innovative interventions to promote adaptive and resilient individuals and societies in terms of health, safety and learning.

Public AdministrationThe coordination of collective action in the face of societal challenges is the main object of the multidisciplinary domainofpublicgovernance.ScholarsinthisfieldatTwente – with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds from economists, lawyers, sociologists, political scientists and scholars of public administration & public management – identify and engage with governance challenges that

impact upon the capacity of democratic systems of governance to meet societal challenges.

Many researchers work in multidisciplinary teams that cross the boundaries of these disciplines or researchers sometimes work in more than one discipline. The disciplines all have their own object of study, their own expertise, andtheirownspecificresearchcommunities. Each discipline aims to address the major societal challenges for the coming years.

RESEARCHThere are two things that are unique about social science research at the University of Twente: the study of societal problems through the lens of an engineering approach and a high tech environment which provides ample opportunities for smart innovations. Traditionally, the social sciences at the University of Twente have strongly focused on health, sustainability, learning and development and (responsible) entrepreneurship. Safety and security, as well as smart cities, have gained growing attention and have, in addition to health, recently been identifiedaskeythemesfortheUniversityasawhole.

Academic staff in the Faculty are aligned to one or multiple of the research institutes (listed on page 4) which enable effective communication and collaboration with colleagues from different Faculties.

EDUCATIONThe Faculty offers bachelors and masters programmes across the spectrum of disciplines from Business Administration to Health Sciences. Students are expected to make knowledge their own, and to look beyond their ownspecialistfieldandbeyondnationalboundaries.Education is multidisciplinary and encourages students to take an international perspective which is strongly informed by current research across disciplines. For a complete list of programmes please visit http://www.utwente.nl/en/education/bachelor/ and http://www.utwente.nl/en/education/master.

HUMAN TOUCH APPROACH – INTERFACING WITH TECHNOLOGYA unique characteristic of the university’s social science research is that the high tech environment provides the opportunities for smart innovations. This high tech environment could be used more in our advantage than is being done now. Essentially, it is possible to incorporate the use of technology in all phases of the engineering approach, i.e. by regarding technology in itself as a societal challenge, by using technology for analysing, diagnosis and for developing an intervention, or for technology-induced implementation. Grounded in a strong basis of disciplinary knowledge, we believe we can make more use of our high tech environment by collaborating in multidisciplinary teams, quite often at the interface between the technological and the social domain.

LIVING AND WORKING IN THE NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, consisting of twelve provinces in western Europe and three islands in the Caribbean. The Netherlands, with a population of over 16 million, is a geographically low-lying country, with about 20% of its area and 21% of its population located below sea level, and 50% of its land lying less than one metre above sea level. Once a great naval power, this small nation boasts a wealth of cultural heritage and is famous for its painters, windmills, clogsandnotoriouslyflatlands.AmodernEuropean country today, it has preserved its highly international character and is known for its liberal mentality. As a founding member of the EU and NATO, and host to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the Netherlands is at the heart of international cooperation. Its small size, welcoming attitude to travellers and many sights make it a unique and fairly easy to discover destination.

ABOUT TWENTEThe University of Twente is the only university in the Netherlands with a true campus. A campus is a large area where all educational buildings, facilities and laboratories are located, and where all teaching and research take place.Oncampus, studentscanfindhousing, dotheirgroceries, participate in sports, have a meal, or go out for the evening. A campus gives a university a completely unique atmosphere. That’s what makes the University of Twente so special. Approximately 2,000 students live on

campus, and the campus grounds are frequented by some 8,500 students every day.

The nearest city to the University is Enschede which comprises 160,000 residents and is the urban heart of the Eastern Netherlands and an epicentre for music, culture and knowledge. The city has a broad range of shops and boutiques all centred around the most convivial public square in the Netherlands; de Oude Market (Old Market Square) that is surrounded by several cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs. Enschede is also home to that fantastic football club, FC Twente!

TAXATIONCertain categories of international staff can receive tax exemption on approximately thirty per cent of their gross salary. This is to compensate for the extra costs they incur in living abroad, such as having to rent temporary accommodation, etc. In principle, the 30% rule applies to staff who have been expressly recruited from another country and who have a formal contract of employment in the Netherlands.
