The Midwest USA is known for a few things: long country roads that never end, small farm towns with great farm-to-table cafes, friendly faces and crops, crops as far as the eye can see. All this has been the perfect seeding to grow one of the world’s leading grain bin manufacturers. Eugene Sukup and his wife

Mary are the business starters and innovators behind Sukup Manufacturing. As a farmer, he patented the idea of stirring grain inside a grain bin with an auger so that there would be no spoiled product. This idea keeps the grain moving so it receives the right amount of air and maintains appropriate temperature.

According to the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), by 2050 the global population is on track to grow another 30-40%, inching ever closer to the 10 billion mark. That’s a lot of people to feed. “There is going to be a need for efficient drying and storage and you need food year round. It’s not a one-time event

during the year. Three hundred and sixty five days and whether it’s the grains or livestock industry, there is going to be more international growth potentials,” says Steve Sukup, Vice President and CFO.

Production Stalks Shoot UpSukup Manufacturing sprouted in 1963 and made the humble farm town of Sheffield, Iowa the company’s permanent home in 1970. Fast forward forty eight years to present day where Sukup Manufacturing is on top of the grain bin industry with 800,000 square feet under roof in Sheffield, and a total of 1.1 million square feet in facilities across the globe. The company is still proud of what Eugene started to this day.

In 2000 they noticed a shift in the agricultural industry and their customers needs. Knowing where to grow business is necessary to stay competitive. Steve noticed that Sukup needed some new products, but more importantly new solutions for farmers and the agricultural industry all together. “In 2000, we realized our customers’ needs were changing and we were not changing with them. So we said, ‘These are the

products our customers want’.” Eighty patents later it’s an understatement to say they have supplied the agricultural industry with the best solutions available. The company itself has grown 800% since 2000. That is a testament to hearing what people truly require when it comes to grain storage, drying, material handling and everything else along the way.

Big Bins Need Big SteelIn 2010 Sukup decided to enter the structural steel arena. After spending their history making grain bins, dryers and material

handling, they were looking forward to the next line of products the agricultural industry needed. Owning seven Peddinghaus machines is a modest venture considering the actual volume of CNC they utilize. Andy Schmitt, Supply Chain Manager at Sukup, elaborates,“I’d say that about 35% of the shop processes structural steel. For us, the building side of our company has been growing constantly since we got into it.” Steve noted that they initially wanted to get into the structural steel game, “We thought we were going to start making steel buildings, but then our grain bins got so large we needed 50 thousand and 100 thousand K roofs and so we said, ‘No we’re going to run rafters for our grain bins, and the structure around the grain bins’.” as he started laughing. Having just recently shipped bins that can handle nearly 2 million bushels, needing quality structural steel was critical and processing it on the Peddinghaus machines made it that much better.

Sukup’s entire Peddinghaus system consists of two PCD drill/saw tandem lines, an HSFDB-2500 plate line and two AFPS-643/Q angle lines. Whatever structural steel challenge Sukup may face, is no challenge at all. By adding an Advantage-2 next to the older Advantage line with two Peddinghaus miter band saws, they have the flexibility to route projects depending on their complexity and keep steel moving. “The tool changer allows us to run from one tool size to the next much more efficiently on the Advantage-2. We can also plan jobs out better by routing simple parts to the Advantage and vice versa. We use Peddinghaus machines for parts for grain bins, material handling and pre-engineered steel buildings. A lot of the products that we build we could not do without Peddinghaus. They play a huge role within our shop,” states Andy.

Sukup has a full range of processing at their plant in Sheffield. With machines to saw, punch, weld, laser cut, stamp roll forms and complete assembly, customers who invest in Sukup get the best product available and one that fits together on the job site every time.

The versatility of Peddinghaus CNC has continued to help Steve think of new ways to accurately

“A lot of the products that we build we could not do without Peddinghaus.

“manufacture their products. Sukup is able to free up other areas of operation by rethinking existing processes, and strengthening them with Peddinghaus machines. Producing higher quality products and a more efficient manufacturing process greatly benefits their customers in the end.

Post HarvestSo what lies ahead for one of the top grain bin manufacturers in the world? Andy states that as far as their machinery goes, they are looking forward to more automation. “Our goal is to never replace a person with a robot, but to bring more automation into our factory and increase efficiency. Move people where they are better suited for different operations and where they can add value.” The global grain storage and drying industry is only going to grow as the population increases. Sukup will be there to make sure that farmers and ranchers keep as much of the grain that they harvest. That’s the power of intelligent manufacturing and listening to customer needs.

“It’s fabulous to be able to run all your structural steel on site and to be able to do special designs along the way,” stated Steve. Sukup processed 400 tons of structural steel for the new offices on their plant floor with their Peddinghaus machines.

Solid RootsOf the top three grain bin manufacturers in the world, Sukup is proudly the only family owned company. “I’m looking forward to the third generation and keep solidifying the foundation for Sukup Manufacturing,” Steve says with a smile. Management at Sukup has a close relationship with the hard working people they trust to produce world class grain bins, dryers and material handling products. “We put our name on every product that leaves our shop floor the same way Peddinghaus does. We stand behind our products,” says Andy.

TECH SPOTLIGHT | PEDDIBOT-1200 TRIANGULATION SCAN

10

Introducing the Triangulation Scanning System on the PeddiBot-1200The PeddiBot-1200 robotic thermal cutting and coping machine comes equipped with a state-of-the-art measurement system to detect positional displacement and distortions of material. This intelligent system consists of a triangulation laser scanner for measuring sections. The material scanning is executed inside the cutting area and is performed in one, continuous cycle. Only one 3D pass is needed – saving burner-on time.

A cutting sequence can then be initiated with an alternative cutting path based on the measurement of the actual material versus the theoretical shape – resulting in higher precision cuts and less rework. The operator can easily reference the measurement in a matter of seconds. The triangular laser scanning system eliminates the need for material probing, thus streamlining productivity on the PeddiBot-1200.

11

Material deviation is a common challenge in any fabrication shop. The pieces programmed within the BIM (Building Information Model) and the pieces rolling through your CNC machines are never exactly the same. This is one of the ways the PeddiBot-1200 truly shines with its triangulation scanning system. Measure material deviations and let the logic of the machine take care of the rest.

This machine logic is how the PeddiBot-1200 is able to adjust the path of the torch during the cutting process. With the information from the initial scan, the robot maintains the true path across the material’s surface. No more lost burns, no more lost time and no more lost money.

Speaking of lost time, probing has plagued steel shops for far too long. This analog method of measurement is a factor of yesterday’s fabrication. The PeddiBot-1200 rules production time tables by keeping the measuring process as unobtrusive as possible to the overall program being operated.

The triangulation scanning system is just one of the many strengths that the PeddiBot-1200 employs to ultimately boost successful projects for your fabrication shop.

AISC | NASCC, ROBOTICS AND TECHNOLOGY

By Charlie Carter (President AISC),

This is an incredibly exciting time in the structural steel fabrication market. With advances in automation, including new robotic systems, we’re on the verge of substantially increasing productivity and reducing costs, all while getting steel out the door even faster.

Attendees at NASCC: The Steel Conference (April 11-13 in Baltimore) not only get to see a wide variety of this new fabrication equipment in operation on the show floor but also can talk with vendors as well as other users. But it’s not just the fabrication equipment that makes the show floor so impressive. All of

the major vendors of fabrication software, detailing software, and design software are all exhibiting, as well as bolting, welding, and system providers (more than 220 exhibitors in total).

Of course, attendees also benefit from the incredible education program with more than 200 technical sessions, many specifically designed for fabricators. These include project management sessions, certification programs, and the latest information on painting and coatings.

For example, almost every fabricator will want to attend “Making Sense of Welding Procedures

and Requirements: Common Welding Questions Answered,” “Quality Control Inspector--What’s Required”, and “Eliminating Costly Fit-Up Issues.” The program also includes a 1.5-hour roundtable discussion just for fabricators where leaders in the industry have the opportunity to sit down and discuss common issues in a non-competitive environment. For a complete list of programs, and to register, visit www.aisc.org/nascc

Steel is in My Blood

What is it about structural steel fabricators and family business? Why are so many steel fabricators privately owned by generations of the same family? Is the family tree made of carbon steel? Does a wide flange chromosome lurk somewhere in their DNA? Maybe the real reason is best described by Steve Robinson, Managing Director of Robinson Structures, who says, “Steel construction is in my blood!”

Robinson Structures was founded in the UK Midlands - Derbyshire, in 2011. It is truly a family owned operation with the patriarch, Steve Robinson, founding the company. Son Ashley is the Operations Director, daughter Lydia directs the financials and wife Beverly (Bev) serves as Office/Human Resource Manager.

The Robinson name has long been associated with UK structural steel fabrication. Steve’s father Sidney, founded the fabrication firm in the 1950s. In the next decade, Steve and his four brothers all joined the company and Robinson Construction was born. In the following years, they invested in Peddinghaus creating a structural fabrication “speed line” which was a testament to their industry expertise. In one 40 hour shift, they were routinely processing 600 – 700 metric tons. Then came the global recession of 2008.

Once Steel Gets in Your Blood – it’s There ForeverFast forward to 2011. Steve reorganized the firm and started slowly by fabricating smaller projects, focusing on superior quality and delivery. Robinson purchased materials

pre-processed from the steel stocking center, assembling and welding the profiles.

As business flourished, the Robinson family chose to design and erect a totally new corporate facility with yard, fabrication shop and office complex in Derbyshire. This contemporary facility screams “structural steel” to every visitor. A steel “tree” greets guests. In the office, visitors appreciate the visible purlins with bolted connections, and the steel artwork - including the “Steve designed” steel conference table. Every visitor knows this is a steel fabricator.

The most important aspect of this facility is the modern workshop where Peddinghaus machine tool technologies provide the fabricating power to create profit.

ROBINSONSTRUCTURES

15

Priority One…Get the Shop Layout Right! Steve Robinson put it concisely, “You must have your factory right – it’s the most important decision.”

In 2016, Robinson chose to build their new workshop. They relied on fabrication expertise from two sources – their Production Manager, Phil Lunney, and the Peddinghaus engineering design team. Phil is a UK structural fabrication veteran and well educated in the industry. Productive Peddinghaus shop layouts are everywhere in the world. The synergy from these two sources provided the production baseline for Robinson’s success.

The Robinson layout plan was executed to perfection. Design for the future, but start small and grow the business. This fits perfectly with Peddinghaus’ modular machine concept.

Starting with a Peddinghaus Advantage-2 drill/saw line with a labor saving material handling system, Robinson Structures’ modest investment immediately paid dividends.

It’s not a Drill – it’s a Fabrication Center The original concept was relatively simple with an infeed cross transfer and conveyor line

feeding a Peddinghaus Advantage-2 drill line with a DG-1250 miter band saw. The outfeed line provided an extended cross transfer to feed directly into the welding/fabrication bay. Robinson fabricated a truss in the column line to achieve the clearance.

“Our first step was the investment of the Peddinghaus equipment,” advised Steve. “With the guidance of Phil Lunney and Peddinghaus, we soon learned we had much more than a profile drilling machine.”

“The versatility of this machine is capability to drill high speed holes, scribe mark connection locations, mill slotted holes and milling of copes, web cuts and similar structural components,” advised Lunney.

“We purchased a drill line, but we really have a true fabrication center. We send a stock profile through the Peddinghaus system. It is cut to the proper length, with all holes drilled, all location connections marked, all copes and cut outs milled, all service holes completed – ready for the welders. No tape measures, no paper drawings, no questions! Our fabrication time is cut in half!” stated Ashley Robinson, “That is how you make profit in a competitive market.”

Milling Haunch Sections on a Drill LineRobinson knew the hidden potential of the Peddinghaus Advantage-2, especially Phil Lunney. Haunch sections are a staple of steel construction, and Phil knew this was a difficult task. Haunch sections normally consist of a thermal cut that requires grinding after finishing. With milling on the Peddinghaus machine, the entire haunch section can be processed in one pass. No grinding, no finishing – complete and ready for the welders.

Phil and the Peddinghaus team combined their knowledge of tooling, feed rates, RPM, clamping and linear motion to provide the technical data to achieve these sophisticated cuts from the Advantage-2 drill. This combined effort has led to a productivity explosion at Robinson.

“No measuring tapes, no torch, no grinding, minimum crane handling – the profile goes straight from the Peddinghaus machine to our welders. We can complete these roof truss profiles with finished haunches in minutes, not hours.”

Universal Language of Technology Solves Labor IssuesFinding quality labor, especially those

experienced in steel fabrication – is a challenge everywhere in the world.

Robinson Structures is proud to employ a highly skilled workforce. However, if the skill level in steel construction were to decline, Robinson has already secured their future.

Ashley Robinson affirms, “We utilize scribe marking to increase fabrication speed and to ensure accuracy. However, if skilled labor suddenly departed our industry, the Peddinghaus Advantage-2 drill line can provide the fabrication skill required for any complex project.”

Using the universal language of modern scribe marking technology, the beams arrive to the shop welder clearly identified where all the angle cleat or plate components are to be welded. No words – only clear universal symbols that are easily understood by every shop employee.

A Family and its Future The family eagerly looks forward to the arrival of phase two of Peddinghaus equipment. This includes a Peddi XDM-630 drill/saw combination machining system, complete with integrated material handling to expedite fabrication. A new PeddiBlast shot blasting system will complement their painting and coating processes.

Once steel is in your family bloodline, it tends to strengthen from generation to generation, evidenced by the Robinson family. By starting in the workshop for their fathers, both Steve and Ashley learned the core principles of steel construction, structural fabrication and overall business acumen. By blending the skills of Bev and Lydia to the management mix, the future of Robinson Structures is secure and positive.

Ashley put it best, “I can’t imagine being in any other industry, steel construction is part of our family, and it’s in our blood – it brings us all together.”

We purchased a drill line, but we really have a true

Software is continually evolving and shaping the world around us as we know it. Intelligent software allows our cell phones, vehicles and even satellites to meet our performance expectations daily, and the structural steel industry is no different. Raptor 3D CAD/CAM Software from Peddinghaus takes CNC innovation further by enabling users to program faster and more accurately from design BIM (Building Information Model) platforms. This coupled with Peddinghaus CNC technology means maximum capacity for fabricators and detailers alike.

Select MRP (Material Requirements Planning) systems are capable of exporting batch nested files in formats known as iDSTV+ and DSTV+. These file types play an important role in the automated development of cut sheets for production. Raptor is capable of importing and exporting these iDSTV+ and DSTV+ files for equipment production. This eliminates the need to manually batch nest files which have already been batch nested within a third party MRP software.

Located in the cozy town of Ridgefield, Washington, Alpha Iron is making waves all across the west coast. From the moment you step through the front doors of Alpha, design and craftsmanship seeps through the shop and into the office. Galvanized metal garnishes the steel-exposed hallways while steel plate borders the walls of the offices for a truly immersed environment in steel fabrication.

Established in 2007, Alpha Iron was created as a part of Alliance Industrial Group, in order to support the structural steel erection side of the business. As business boomed and project deadlines became more demanding, product accuracy and delivery times to the erection sites became more challenging.

With Alliance Industrial Group’s addition of Alpha Iron, they are seeing the benefits of quality control at its finest. Run by President Jim Buchan and his wife Lisa, the two facilities can now work together in processing an entire project from start to finish. Beginning in the fab shop and ending at the erection site, record delivery times are reached along with every project completion. Now with a fabrication shop stretched throughout 62,000 square feet, Alpha has the ability to continue to grow into the future.

Peddinghaus and Alpha: A Dynamic Duo When Alpha invested in fabrication, naturally they also invested in CNC technology. Expressing a need for the best equipment and the best employees to produce speed and quality in production, Alpha purchased their first Peddinghaus machine in 2016, the PeddiRotator. President of Alpha, Jim Buchanstates, “As time went on and I realized the constraints I had in my shop, Peddinghaus

became a natural choice for me. It’s built well, it’s dependable, and as throughput increased I needed to have the dependable equipment in order to serve our customers.”

In any weld shop, the movement of steel structures can be potentially hazardous and costly. With Alpha’s addition of the PeddiRotators, welders are provided with better ergonomics and comfort in repositioning of the weld. Limiting crane usage has resulted in more production in addition to better weld quality.

The Zeman SBA Compact+ (Steel Beam Assembler) robotic welder, distributed by Peddinghaus, has also allowed for an increase in annual throughput, while reducing manual labor costs. Jim reports, “In our quest for speed and quality, the Zeman has been a great

addition to our shop. It is very accurate when fitting up, and allows me to feel confident that all our fabrications are going to be assembled correctly and within the tolerances we expect.” The Zeman system is a perfect fit for Alpha’s process as they can select an option to either full weld or fit only, and let their welders finish the steel profiles.

Alpha’s most recent Peddinghaus purchase, the HSFDB-B plate processor, has already made quite the impact in the fab shop. With the ability for drilling, plasma cutting, oxy-fuel cutting, scribing, countersinking, milling and tapping, the HSFDB-B is providing Alpha with a boosted competitive edge. “Shop space is very expensive, building costs are expensive and price per square foot of your facility is very valuable. So this new high-speed plate system from Peddinghaus allows

us to have a very small footprint inside the shop, keep all the plate outside the shop and feed the plate into the building with a conveyor.” Jim explains, “Not only are we getting four times as much production in our plate, we’re using about 20% of the footprint of our old system.”

This combined arsenal of Peddinghaus machinery at Alpha has led them to be able to maintain an annual tonnage capacity of more than 15,000 tons per year. Operations Manager, Alex Reff confirms, “In this business it all comes down to getting a leg up on the competition, getting a project done quickly and get the building operating. Our CNC equipment is great for that sort of function.”

at Alpha. The state-of-the-art office has a full view of the shop floor with windows serving as walls separating the office and the shop. Supervisors are able to physically see the progress in the fab shop at all times without even needing to step foot inside, keeping communication seamless between programmers, detailers and machine operators.

If you come into Alpha Iron’s facility, you’ll notice there is a lot of artificial intelligence, but also a lot of intelligent people running artificial intelligence. The team at Alpha Iron values each employee and their individual strengths, utilizing them in a way they can express their expertise and grow in the industry. In return for each employee’s impressive drive and dedication, Alpha Iron invests every penny of profit back into the company. They are committed to remaining

successful and providing their employees with top-notch working conditions and exposure to new skills.

Each machine at Alpha has an equipment owner whose job is to ensure that machine is routinely maintained and serviced as needed. Through this equipment ownership program, machine operation time is maximized. In an attempt to prevent shop downtime, all employees must request access to a machine through the machine owner. This gives Alpha operators a sense of responsibility and pride on a higher level.

In the case of a needed service, machine owners at Alpha have been able to successfully utilize Peddinghaus’ 24-hour service and call center. Jim discloses, “Before I was even aware of an issue when I showed up for work at 8:00 a.m.,

Peddinghaus already had a technician flown out from Chicago to service that machine. How could you ask for better service than that?”

Prepared to Invest in the Next BestJim and his team at Alpha are in a constant search for new and improved ways to remain competitive, streamline their processes and achieve top throughput. A team excited about technology, the Alpha Iron success story is only just beginning.

“The future of Alpha Iron looks excellent.” Jim declares, “As we continue to reinvest in this equipment and technology, we will continue to gain sales in new marketplaces and continue to prosper.”

TOOLBOX | CARBIDE DRILL TOOL WEAR AND TEAR

24

From the moment you install a new drill bit, you expect it to perform nothing less than perfectly throughout its lifespan. Upon installation, always make sure your new tooling is in tip-top shape from the very beginning. With a brand-new drill bit you will notice quiet drilling, short chips, no sparks when drilling and perfect holes with a nice finish. A new drill bit possesses a maximum capacity of 3,000-4,000 holes under optimum conditions.

Not sure when it’s time to swap out your tooling before it breaks? The effects of old tooling may be visually subtle, but there are a few things to look out for. An old tool tip can create more sparks than usual when drilling, due to the carbide coating wearing itself down. Even the smallest notch in tooling can cause long and stringy chips, as the tooling is essentially shaving the material. Some of the more obvious effects of old tooling can include a loud squealing sound while drilling, a rough hole finish or noticeable craters in the carbide tip’s surface.

Chipped Tool Bit Edge

25

Shorter Tool LengthThe number one rule of thumb to keep in mind when using carbide tooling is to use the shortest tools possible. Although an extremely hard substance, carbide is brittle, therefore it does not react well with vibration. The longer the tool, the less rigidity the tool will have. With a shorter tool, the carbide will maintain maximum rigidity through vibrations, and prevent breakage and constant tool changes.

Better Speeds and FeedsCarbide tool tips breaking after or even before just 500 holes? You may have your surface feet per minute (SFM) set too high. When it comes to prolonging carbide tool life, the right SFM can assist in getting the most out of your tooling. 300 SFM is to be considered the perfect speed for mild steel, and can help you reach a maximum 1,000-4,000 holes out of just one tool tip*. An SFM of anything over 300 is too fast, and can cause tool breakage at as little as 500 holes or less. An SFM of anything less than 300 is too slow, and can result in a loss of profit due to not processing material fast enough.

Adjust the MQL FlowBy utilizing our modern vegetable oil based, Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) system that applies lubrication directly to the surface of material, tool life can be widely extended. Finding the correct MQL flow determines how easily the tool bit cuts into the steel surface and clears chips away from the cut. The perfect amount of coolant should leave a small ring around the finished hole, but too much will result in unwanted pools or drips of coolant on the steel.

GETTING TO KNOW | LYLE MENKE

a modern facility. I love that our employees have performed most of the construction.”

You may be wondering what retirement entails for a busy guy like Lyle. To no surprise, he plans on spending his newfound free time with family. Lyle is excited to operate a different kind of “green machine” picking up extra work on the family farm. Seven grandchildren deep, he’s got a lot of spoiling to do on top of golfing, reading and performing volunteer work with his wife, Debbie.

With the NASCC quickly approaching, we are preparing Lyle for a traditional last Peddinghaus hoorah you won’t want to miss. Lyle has been a major influence, mentor and resource to every employee who has stepped through the big glass front doors. The original creator of the PeddiNews magazine himself has left quite an impact on the steel industry, and will be tremendously missed by every individual here at Peddinghaus Corp.

MEET LYLE –Everyone’s Favorite Steel Industry GuyOver the years, the Peddinghaus family of employees has blossomed into an esteemed force in the steel industry. Exceptional talent, expertise and camaraderie fill the halls of our facilities. In this close-knit community, it is always bittersweet when the time comes for a beloved employee to move onto other opportunities. After serving Peddinghaus for nearly 40 years, the one and only Lyle Menke is headed to retirement at the end of this year.

Lyle began his career at Peddinghaus back in 1981, and has worn many hats at the company since then. Serving as Assistant Sales Manager for 7 years, Customer Service Manager for 15 years, Vice President of Marketing for 10 years and Chief Spiritual Officer (CSO) for the last 5 years, Lyle is an absolute asset to the company. Saying he has excelled at Peddinghaus would be an understatement.

“I am proud to serve Peddinghaus as Chief Spiritual Officer. The title is unique, but is a perfect fit for a modern company. My purpose is to mentor and share knowledge about our customers, our industry, our products and our corporate culture and business philosophy. I interact with our customers, our employees and members of the entire metal-working industry, both domestic and international. After 37 years, my typical day is not routine. I attend many departmental meetings, but because Peddinghaus is a family-owned business, I have the wonderful opportunity to interact with each employee. We can discuss a wide range of topics from current business trends to customer questions to families. This interaction is a key to understanding the culture and philosophy of Peddinghaus.”

After growing up on the family farm in small town Grant Park, Illinois, Lyle could never even begin to fathom the idea of himself travelling to global destinations on behalf of his career. Now, he has been to every continent except for Antarctica with Peddinghaus. Over the course of 37 years, Lyle has seen numerous shifts in the steel industry, the economy, technology and in Peddinghaus itself.

“I’m only a part of the team, but I am very proud of Peddinghaus’ sterling reputation in the industry - our customer commitment. Additionally, I am truly proud of our beautiful facilities both in Bradley and Andrews. I am so proud to walk through our five-building campus here in Bradley, once just a single combined machine shop/assembly bay. The PeddiCenter is a superb state-of-the-art facility, and our visitors love the building. In 1981, I would never have dreamed that we would have a gourmet PeddiCafe, a PeddiGym or such

PINCHPOINT | MACHINE SHUTDOWN PROCEDURES

Peddinghaus machines are designed with technology that provides accurate and reliable processing. We design our machines to make steel fabricators’ processes end with nothing less than world class superior quality. However, with human intervention there is always room for small mistakes. When operator error occurs, our machines have the options to either prevent a serious issue ahead of time or immediately halt one that has already occurred.

MILD ISSUEIf a mild machine issue were to arise, such as strange drilling noises or movements, there are precautions to take when the emergency stop is not completely necessary. In cases like these, the first step to take is activating the “single block” feature from the machine control. Single block allows the machine to finish processing the current line of code, then stop. The machine requires the “cycle start” button to be pressed to execute the next line of code while it is in single block. Pressing single block again will toggle the machine back to normal mode, then by pressing cycle start, the machine resumes operation. This allows an operator to assess conditions without interrupting production.

MODERATE ISSUEThere may be times in a fabrication shop where a critical complication arises, but is not necessarily an emergency that requires a total machine shutdown. For instance, if the operator’s settings for the drilling process are incorrect and now the process is in danger of breaking the tool. At this time, activating the “cycle stop” feature from the machine control will put the machine in an immediate paused state, no matter the operation. In this state, the operator is able to view and correct the issue. If the cycle stop button is pressed on a programmable logic controller (PLC) based machine while drilling, tapping or slotting, the spindle will retract and stop spinning.

SERIOUS ISSUEIn the rare case that shop employees or machine damage is at risk, the red E-stop button must be pressed immediately. These are located not only on the control, but on the machine as well. This action shuts off the machine’s hydraulics and disconnects the voltage to the drives. Keeping operators safe when errors happen in a steel fabrication facility is Peddinghaus’ top priority. In the case of any machine damage, contact Peddinghaus’ 24-hour service center at your earliest convenience.

29

Procedure for Recovering From a Machine Shutdown

1. Release E-stopWhen the E-stop has been pressed, it must first be released in order to power the machine back on. Once the E-stop has been released and the machine is powered back on, troubleshooting can begin.

2. Observe Faults Displayed on ControlFaults will be displayed on the machine control in either a short, descriptive note, or in code form. Multiple faults can be displayed at once, such as if the hydraulic pump has shut off. Recurring faults can be cleared from the display when fixed, but new faults can’t be cleared, thus requiring a reset.

3. Reset and Observe Faults AgainOnce all issues are resolved, reset and check faults again. This process will be repeated until all faults are cleared and your machine is running accordingly.

4. Contact Peddinghaus 24-Hour SupportIf all else fails and the machine issue is critical, Peddinghaus 24-hour service call center should be contacted immediately. Our inside service staff have years of experience in the field, assembly, or factory checkout; providing them with hands-on experience with our machines. At Peddinghaus our staff is not only available when you need them, but they maintain superior knowledge to solve questions as they arise.

When the sunshine begins to fade and the hunger sets in, don’t settle for fast food, try this easy shrimp and grits at home!

You will need the following ingredients:• 1 cup stone-ground grits• 1 lb peeled shrimp• Handful finely chopped tomatoes and onions• 3 cups water• 1 ½ cups half-and-half• ½ cup white wine• Dollop of butter

Directions:Bring water to a boil, then slowly add in grits. Cover and reduce heat to low, stirring occasionally. When grits begin to thicken, stir in half-and-half. Continue to simmer on low for one hour, stirring occasionally.

Shrimp Gravy:Over medium-high heat, melt a dollop of butter in a frying pan and sauté tomatoes and onions until they begin to caramelize. Add shrimp to pan and stir in until they become pink. REFLOW | STEELFAB, CHARLOTTE, NC - USA

SteelFab Knows ProductionOne thing you can always be sure of as a fabricator is that both your company and Peddinghaus are planning for the future. The next steps in business are more vital than what you have done previously. SteelFab is a company that does just that, and they have no intention of slowing down their progress.

SteelFab is a leader in steel fabrication of all kinds. A company that was forged in a small shop, is now a global force to be reckoned with in structural steel. With multiple plants around the United States, they are outfitted to provide the heaviest projects with the best results. In Charlotte, North Carolina, their plant is intelligently crafted to keep their CNC machines under roof, while their material storage and material handling stays outside. Peddinghaus’ material handling is built to not only withstand

the punishment from the heaviest sections, but also from constant, three hundred and sixty five day abuse from mother nature herself.

Feeding the Shop Russell Barngrover, Vice President and Plant Manager of SteelFab, elaborates, “The first thing I noticed when I came to SteelFab was that all of the automation was INSIDE of the building! I wanted to move all of the machines outside that we could. You need to have your inside areas dedicated to welding, fit up, painting, etc. Now our copers, angle line, beam lines, band saws and cambering machine are all outside in a network of sheds paired with material handling. It just makes sense to do it that way, and the Peddinghaus machines are designed for that.”

When you think of the moving forward, the last thing you would want to do is have to take three

steps backwards. Keep the material handling outside so you can add machine after machine under roof, and add profit and production to your company. Having worked hand in hand with Peddinghaus’ shop layout experts, Russell was able to add buildings, pour new concrete foundations and retrofit the existing facility to create the perfect fit for their shop workflow.

Give Peddinghaus’ systems layout engineering team a call at 1 (815) 937-3800 to learn the secrets of shop floor layout success today!

Lyle MenkeCSO | Peddinghaus Corporation

upward trend. As John states, “the construction industry is the benefactor of the pickup in the U.S. economy.” He reports that current construction activity in dollars exceed where we were in at the zenith in 2008. As the millennial generation prefer the urban lifestyle, the result is a boom in city high-rise apartments and condos with slower growth in suburban/rural single family homes. New construction is affecting all areas of the economy – time for everyone to benefit!

Baltimore, Here We ComeI love attending the NASCC! I can’t wait to see so many of my industry friends and colleagues. Every attendee is optimistic, energized, and prepared to be an agent of change in today’s construction market! There is a dynamic on the show floor that simply says “steel”.

Looking forward to seeing you in Baltimore. It’s where the best and brightest in steel construction gather to make their mark in history. Don’t miss it!

It’s NASCC Time!Put it in your calendar – April 11th at the Baltimore Convention Center – the next NASCC conference will be kicking off. Peddinghaus will be there in booth #1808. Of course, we’ll display new labor saving machines all powered up and ready to demo…the PeddiBot-1200 robotic thermal processor and our new PeddiStacker-2500 for heavy plate! (A much needed tool for handling and processing stock plate.)

What will Peddinghaus plan for Wednesday night, April 11th? I promise that Baltimore 2018 is going to be exceptionally entertaining! Stay tuned to our social media networks for more details. Hey fabricators, don’t miss it!

Walk Down NASCC Memory LaneThe last time the AISC had the conference in Baltimore was 2003. I guess you could say that a few things have changed since then.

In 2003, the AISC and Peddinghaus worked together on a unique idea to represent the sustainability of steel. Conference attendees had the opportunity to take a sledge hammer to a 1994 Oldsmobile Achieva. No, it wasn’t just to release frustration.

This “beat up” vehicle was then transported to a nearby scrapyard for shredding, fitting nicely into a 4 ft. cardboard box. The box was transported to a steel mill, and “voila”, a new W27x85 structural beam was rolled, and then shipped back to the show floor.

Peddinghaus positioned the W27x85 into their 1250-510 band saw, and proceeded to cut thin souvenirs for attendees. (Ah, the good old days when you could carry a piece of steel on to an airplane….)

In 2018, the sustainability of structural steel is even more important to the construction industry.

Got Business? Steel is BOOMINGSome more positive news for the steel construction industry. The American Institute of Architects monthly billing index rose 1.9 points to 54.7 in January. This is the highest January ABI score since 2007. This marks the fourth consecutive monthly reading above 50.

What does this mean? Architects are busier than ever on new building/construction projects. This means increased activity for the steel building industry when these transpire into new jobs for the steel industry.

Our friend, John Cross, the AISC Marketing VP tells us that steel construction remains on an
