Ayesha Siddiqa Induction of New Batch Fall 2019 After completion of one successful year, DME wel- comed its second Batch (Fall-2019) along with their parents on 22 nd Oct 2019. An orientation ceremony was held to introduce and familiarize new students to the campus environment, its faculty and infrastruc- ture. Students were briefed about transition into the new schedule of things and life on campus. Students and parents had interaction with faculty and staff members and were informed about labs, unique teach- ing practices, academic activities and resource availa- ble at DME in specific and at campus in general. At the end students and parents visited DME and appreciated state of the art labs and Lecture Halls facilities. DME congratulates the students on securing admis- sion in one of the leading university of the country and wish them all the best. Batch of Fall 2019 thanked their sen- iors, faculty and staff and promised to work jointly for different professional stu- dent chapters to bring laurels for DME and CUI from national and international platforms under the supervision of their dedicated faculty. Prof. M. Abid in addition to Chair and Head DME is appointed as Dean Faculty of Engineering a COMSATS Univer- sity Islamabad. As Dean he con- veyed his message to DME to gain excellence in education, research, entrepreneurship and become solution providers for industry. The concept of sci- ence, technology and society should be the focus of teaching at DME. Mechanical Engineering being a multidisciplinary disci- pline can play a major role with new manufacturing, automation and other technological shifts. DME graduates should have OBE attributes to be able to work and opt for higher studies at both the national and interna- tional levels to benefit the com- munity and industry through innovative solutions. Induction of New Batch Fall 2019

After completion of one successful year, DME wel-comed its second Batch (Fall-2019) along with their parents on 22nd Oct 2019. An orientation ceremony was held to introduce and familiarize new students to the campus environment, its faculty and infrastruc-ture. Students were briefed about transition into the new schedule of things and life on campus. Students and parents had interaction with faculty and staff members and were informed about labs, unique teach-ing practices, academic activities and resource availa-ble at DME in specific and at campus in general. At the end students and parents visited DME and appreciated state of the art labs and Lecture Halls facilities.

DME congratulates the students on securing admis-sion in one of the leading university of the country and wish them all the best.

Visit of Dr Raziuddin from KPOGCL visited DME. He is very well known for his experience in oil and gas sector. He appreci-ated DME labs during visit and oppurtunties for collaboration for joint projects are dis-cussed in meeting.

DME strongly believes on Safety first and is ISO9001 Certified. To deal with the emer-gency situations, a training session was organized by the campus safety department for faculty and staff of DME.

Workshop of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)

Fire Extinguisher Training

A workshop was organized by Head of DME at CUI Islamabad Campus from 7-9th November 2019 regarding latest trends on Global Navigation Satellite Systems under USAID funded project. Workshop was attended by researchers, officials and faculty members of related departments including Pakistan Metrology Department, Ministry of Climate Change, SUPARCO, Institute of Space Technology, COMSATS University departments from different campuses including CCRD, MET, High Mountain Research Centre, DEE and DME; Agriculture University Faisalabad, RS and IGIS department of Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi, University of Engg. and Tech. Peshawar, Korakaram International University, Gilgit Baltistan, Univ of Sakrdu, Gilgit Baltistan, Env. Sci. Dept. Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad, Nuclear Institute of Agricultural Biology, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Departments of COMSATS University and others. This was observed a very useful workshop for the researchers who have related knowledge in GNSS. Prof Rui Fernandes was the Trainer from Potugal as expert by USAID.

ASHRAE Best Advisor Award

ASHRAE Northern Chapter, Pakistan orga-nized its 15th annual ceremony in which Prof. Muhammad Abid received Certificate of Appreciation for the Best ASHRAE student chapter advisor. ASHRAE student chapter is actively working in DME for organizing differ-ent student professional activities under his supervision.

Dr Paolom Tronville from Polltecnico dl Tornio Denerg, Italy visited CUI along with Mr Ather Siddiqui of ASHRAE Pak Chapter and had detailed meeting and discussed possibilities of joint research collaborations with his Re-search Group related to new standards for air cleaning technologies for industrial applica-tions and other related departments in his University.

Indigenous Design and Development of SHPB Setup

Under the supervision of Prof. M. Abid, re-

searcher M Bilal Nutkani has successfully de-

signed and developed state-of-the-art Split

Hopkinson Pressure Bar Setup under PSF-NCSF

funded project. SHPB test facility is a special-

ized and globally accepted experimental tech-

nique to obtain material data at high defor-

mation rate impact loading conditions. This is

one of its kind in the country developed indige-

nously at a reasonably low cost and will be

used by industries in Pakistan confidently.

Fulbright Fellowship Award

Dr. Muhammad Abid, Assistant Prof. DME is awarded prestigious Ful-bright Post doctoral fel-lowship for the year 2019-20. During his visit to Purdue University USA, he will be working on 2D-nano materials for ultra-fast heat transfer in ther-mal applications.

Dr Tomonori Kato Fukoka Institute of Technology Japan visits DME

Dr. Tomonori Kato from Department of Intelligent Mechanical

Engineering, Fukuoka Institute of Technology Japan along with

Dr Amjad Hassn visited DME CUI Wah Campus on 19 Dec 2019.

Dean FoE /Head DME Prof. Abid along with senior faculty mem-

bers welcomed the guests. Both Dr Kato and Dr Abid gave

presentations about research areas at their respective depart-

ments. Future avenues of mutual cooperation between the two

educational institutions on faculty exchange and graduate stu-

dents scholarships were discussed and agreed to proceed for any

joint possibilities. Prof. Kato introduced his research activities in

the field of robotics, pneumatics and research facilities available

at Fukuoka Institute of Technology. Professor Kato visited DME

laboratories and appreciated the facilities provided to students. Director Campus Prof Sajjad

Visit to Heavy Mechanical Complex DME organized a study tour to Heavy Mechan-ical Complex Taxila. Students experienced the practical application of theoretical concepts and observed industrial drawing, welding, machining and manufacturing. Students visit-ed machine shop, fabrication shop, Design Center, Forging and Heat Treatment and Hy-draulic Press shops.

ASHRAE Visit - Centaurus Mall HVAC Plant

DME students visited Centaurus Mall HVAC plant room to study heating and cooling sys-tem. Visit was organized by ASHRAE. Students observed practical application of theoretical knowledge learned during Thermodynamics Course and Lab and various mechanical oper-ations. During the visit they observed working of absorption chillers and its thermodynamic cycle. They were also briefed about different parts of absorption chiller including heat gen-erators, cooling towers and evaporators.

ASME Visit To Rastgar Engineering & Co

DME students visited Rastgar Engineering Company which deals in manufacturing of wheel hubs and axles for both national and international industries. Students learned about different manufacturing techniques and quality control standards and visited foundry shop and machining shop and observed cast-ing techniques and CNC lathe operations.

AIAA Chapter—Water Rocket Competition

Water rocket competition was organized by AIAA student chapter. Students designed wa-ter rockets being part of Dynamics course. Range and height of their rocket was meas-ured and positions were declared by the Jury.

Industrial Visits

Engr Danish Khan, Assistant Manager Design in KSB pumps Hassan Abdal delivered lecture to students of Engg Drawing and intro-duced them to draw-ing practices adopt-ed by KSB to design their products. It was an interactive session and this activity is a part of academia industry partnership.

DME students actively partici-pated in student week in this semester. Different activities were planned by respective societies for competitions. DME students got first position in drama and Rubrics Cube Solv-ing. They also participated in outdoor sports activities.

SYED MUQTADIR ZAIDI I am from Quetta Baluchi-stan. To be honest, life at COMSATS University is really enjoyable and Faculty and staff in DME is simply awe-some. I am really happy being a part of DME@CUI Wah. I believe DME will

polish my capabilities both professionally and personally during my stay here for 4 years.

AYESHA IDRESS I feel sublime on getting ac-ceptance from CUI. It has been Bodacious journey up till date. The allied as well as DME faculty made it top-Hole experience through their full devotion and enthusiasm towards the student body.

Our instructors are invariably available for our counseling and their guidance have al-ways paved way for further learning.

HAMZA YUNUS I’m fortunate that I got ad-mission in DME at CUI Wah Campus. Though it’s my very 1st semester but I’m really satisfied being here in such a comfortable and family like environment. Our HOD and

other faculty members are the finest and greatest teachers I’ve ever met. They are putting their best efforts.

FURQAN BHATTI A great start with mechanical engineering and I am really enjoying this experience be-cause its a field full of practi-cal work. My own interest was in this field and its really

enjoying and adventurous. The labs are well equipped with latest equipment and our teachers putting a lot of their effort in grooming us to become professional me-chanical engineers.

CPD Workshops @ DME

Past, Present and Future of ANN DME and DEE jointly organized a CPD activity on an emerging topic “Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in field of mechanical engineering for ad-vancement of ma-chine learning”. Dr Talha, Assistant Prof DEE delivered this lecture. He explained the formation and working of artificial neural network for machine learning and making machine efficient for decision making professionally. Both the students and faculty appreciated his way of teach-ing and sharing this topic with its applica-tions.

Manufacturing and Testing of Composite Materials

DME organized CPD workshop on “Manufacturing and Testing of Composite Materials”. Eng. Imran Ghumman from HITEC University, Taxila being an expert delivered lecture. He explained different methodologies used for making different types of composites along with their practical applications. Students from DME, Faculty and Profes-sionals from Bestway Cement and HMC Taxila attended the workshop.

Certificate Distribution Ceremony

DME always appreciates excellent work done by students, faculty and staff and organized ceremony for the distribution of merit certificates and CPD workshop certifi-cates among students who got position in semester and those who participated in CPD activities.

ASHRAE Appreciation Certificate Prof Abid, presented Certifi-cate of Appreciation to Raja Hamza, President of ASHRAE CUI Wah Chapter for his commitment to chap-ter. He advised all members to actively participate and organize professionally to benefit community.

Prof. Muhammad Abid visited Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi’an, China from 18-25 June 2019 under his PSF-NCSF funded project to review the research progress of both the teams, visit key laboratories and experimental facilities and discuss the way forward and future collaboration. Under this project Design and Development of Split Hop-kinson Bar setup and design and develop-ment of innovative impact resistant hybrid structures based on super elastic shape memory alloys and light weight lattice is in progress.

Prof. Muhammad Abid visited Harbin Engineering University China from 26 June to 3rd July as Visiting Professor and delivered lectures. He visited Underwater Acoustics Lab and Mechanical Engineer-ing Department. In joint meetings possi-ble research collaborations and setup of Underwater Acoustic Lab was agreed.

Training of Gas Turbine

DME is committed to deliver state of the art labs and to groom students with prac-tical application and knowledge. Gas tur-bine was purchased to familiarize students with design cycle, operation and control of gas turbine. It is indeed a very useful equipment for teaching and training of students with real industrial setup so that when students join industry they have hands on experience and awareness of this system.

Bio-Gas Plant

DME purchased a biogas plant being an important part of the renewable energy lab. DME is committed to teach their students all latest technological trends for energy generation. Pakistan being the agro based country with abundant of biomass, this will enable students to learn process of biogas production using different bio wastes and learn process for its design, process, opera-tion and implementation to benefit commu-nity.

3D Scanner

To get students familiarize with the advance manufacturing techniques, DME purchased 3D scanner along with VX element for ad-vance manufacturing lab. Students will learn scanning of parts and will develop 3D mod-els for 3D printing using 3D printers availa-ble in Advanced Manufacturing Lab at DME. In addition FEA can be performed for the scanned objects for further design optimiza-tion. 3D scanner and 3D printers are part of the additive manufacturing lab.

Visit to Northwestern Polytechnic University China Meeting in Dubai by LEAD Pakistan

Prof. Muhammad Abid attended a meeting on Pak-Afghan Stakeholder Consultation: The Way Forward for Benefit Sharing in Kabul River Basin (KRB) in Dubai organized by LEAD Pakistan on 16-17th October 2019 funded by PEER USAID. This was the 3rd event organized to discuss issues related to KRB. Prof. Abid is also working on KRB under funded project by PEER USAID and is member of the consultation team to discuss progress on technical as well as political aspects. Participants from Afghani-stan, Pakistan and USAID attended and discussed in detail to proceed further.

Information Technology. Joint possibilities were

also discussed for funded scholarship for PhD and

MS studies for Pakistani students at HEU China.
