To study on a 14-16 course at Swindon College your child will need:• Enthusiasm about their chosen subject• Commitment to attend and work well at college • To be nominated by their school and complete a satisfactory interview• A good attendance and punctuality record• To be able to complete assignments on time• Written consent from their parent or carer to attend the College and follow our policies• To tell us about any relevant medical issues and learning support needs your child may have.

If your child’s school agrees they can apply for one of these courses, they’ll need to complete an application form. This will be sent to the College along with a school reference. Shortly afterwards they will beinvited for an interview.

Full Time Placements

The College can enrol students onto our 14-16 full-time programme and part time courses. We support them in the same way as our 16+ full-time students.

At your initial interview an agreement is reached between the student and all parties concerned as to the suitability of the course and college environment for the individual student. Full time 14-16 placements are usually funded by the school, attended by the student. Previously home tutored students or students not currently on roll at a school can apply directly to the College. This is an opportunity for you to continue your studies and be registered for your GCSE exams.

The 14-16 GCSE programme is designed in a way that enable students to study the three core subjects, English, Maths and Science at GCSE. In addition to this, a vocational qualification will be chosen from thisbooklet to complete their timetable.

Do I need to attend an interview?Yes, everyone who applies for a place on a 14-16 course will need to come in for a brief interview with one of our tutors. This is friendly chat to find out about you and why you want to do the course. It will give you the chance to ask us questions. You may also be invited to an induction/ taster day.

Do I need to wear a uniform to college?You do not need to wear school uniform but some courses require you to wear a uniform or safety clothes.

I get a free school meal - what happens on my college day?We will provide you with a lunch voucher that you can use in the College Refectory if you are in college for a full day.

What do I do if I am unwell and cannot come to college?Your parent or carer can either, ring on (01793) 491591 or send a text message to us on 07580246814. Or email [email protected] Please could you let us know as early as possible.

I have help with lessons at school. What support is there in college?If support in class is needed this will be discussed with your school to arrange suitable support while at college.

Will there be older people in my class?No, all students will be aged 16 or under.

Will I just be with people from my school?Most classes are mixed groups, so there is likely to be students from lots of different schools. Some schools may have arranged a discrete group, in which case only students from your school will be in this class. You will be notified by your school if this applies to your course.

School Reports Your son/daughter will be fully supported during their time with us while on a full time or part time 14-16 programme. Our tutors will send reports to their school regarding their progress which will merge with the schools reporting system. You will be able to meet with the tutors either at the College parents/carers evenings or sometimes they are invited to your school’s parents/carers evening.

AttendanceRegisters are taken in each class and the school will be notified of anyone that is absent within an hour of the class start time. If your son/daughter is taken ill while at college someone from our 14-16 team will contact you to discuss the situation.

Getting to and from CollegeTransport arrangements vary from school to school; some will bring students to college as a group while others will ask students tomake their own way to college.

There is a Number 15 Bus that stops outside Swindon College every 15 minutes.

ID Badges and Safety ClothesAll students will be issued with a photo ID badge at the start of their course. They must carry this on them at all times while on the College campus. For health and safety reasons, certain courses will require safety boots and overalls in the workshops.

About the CourseThis course is ideal if you are undecided on a specific area you wish to study. This is a great

opportunity to sample three subjects rotating throughout the year.

You can choose from:

• Brickwork/Plastering • Beauty Therapy • Catering • Childcare • Electrical Installation

• Hairdressing • Motor Vehicle • Plumbing • Wood Trades.

Progression

Following completion of this course, Year 11 learners can apply to progress onto

a full time Level 1 programme of their choice. Year 10 students get the opportunity

to sample a further three subjects the following year

About the CourseWorking with children is one of the most rewarding and personally fulfilling

career choices. At Swindon College our goal is to help all of our students prepare

for a range of caring careers such as nursery work and play work. The qualification

explores the range of activities and experiences, which can encourage children to eat

healthily, look at books, stories, poems and rhymes that may be used with

children aged between 0-5 years.

About the CourseAll learners who are keen to explore the Construction industry will benefit greatly

from this learning programme. The course will cover various building trades over

the two years such as Carpentry, Brickwork, Plastering and Basic Building Maintenance.

About the CourseAre you a creative thinker? Do you enjoy working on practical projects? Then this could

be the course for you. During the 2 years you will have the opportunity to experience a

variety of different specialist areas of Art and Design and Creative Media.

During the course you will study units in the following specialist areas:

• Visual Arts • Graphic Design

• Interactive Media • Photography

Progression Following successful completion of these

units, a Level 1 learner can apply to

About the CourseThis qualification will give you an introduction into the exciting world of

Hairdressing. You will cover the art of professional shampooing and conditioning,

applying semi-permanent hair colours and styling hair. You will also learn about

customer services and reception work.

Progression Either a full time Level 1

qualification in Hairdressing

or full time employment

in a salon as an Apprentice

Hairdresser.

Duration: 2 Years

Days & Times: Wednesday 9-12pm

Uniform/Equipment: Black Polo shirt, black trousers, flat black shoes

About the CourseThe qualification will give you an introduction into the exciting world of Beauty Therapy.

If you enjoy working as part of a team, meeting lots of people and have a passion for

fashion then look no further than a career in Beauty Therapy. In the first year you will be

given an overview of the beauty industry covering subjects such as the art of make-up,

professional nail care and facials. In Year 2 you will specialise in Nail Services.

Progression Either a full-time Level 1 or Level 2

qualifications in Beauty Therapy or

Nail Services. Alternatively, you could

go into full time employment/training

in a salon.

Engineering Qualification: BTEC - Level 2 Award/Certificate

Duration: 2 Years

Days & Times: Wednesday 1-4pm

About the CourseEngineering is an continually growing industry, especially in the Wiltshire area. Here at

Swindon College we have excellent industry-standard facilities and workshops to cover

Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering. This course is designed to

cover units of all three areas.

Progression On completion of this qualification you

could either progress onto Level 3

Engineering or specialise further in

Electrical Engineering or Mechanical,

or seek employment as an

Apprentice Engineer.

Hospitality/Catering Qualification: BTEC Level 1 Award in Hospitality

Duration: 2 Years

Days & Times: Wednesday 1-4pm

Uniform/Equipment: To be advised at interview

Entry requirements: Predicted D+ student

About the CourseThis qualification is intended for learners who wish to explore the hospitality sector. It

will help them develop a broad insight into the industry, by encouraging them to

develop and practise basic catering and food safety skills and gain relevant

background knowledge required for employment in the hospitality sector or

progression onto another learning programme. Students will also have the

opportunity to work in the hospitality industry.

The units you will cover are:

• Introduction to the hospitality industry

• Basic food preparation and cooking

• Food safety in catering and Health & Safety

• Planning and running an event.

ProgressionOn successful completion of this qualification learners may progress into skilled

employment or decide to continue studying the Diploma in Professional Cookery,

Diploma in Professional Food & Beverage Service or maybe an Apprenticeship.

About the CourseChoosing a Public Services course at Swindon College will allow students to take their

first steps towards joining the Armed Forces, the Police, Fire or Ambulance Services,

Prison or Security Services. It will also provide a valuable insight into the various roles

and responsibilities a career in Public Services entails.

Studies will include :

• Physical preparation

• Fitness testing

• Responding to emergency services

• Crime and its effects on society

• Outdoor and adventurous expeditions

• Leadership and teamwork.

ProgressionFollowing the completion of this qualification you could

progress onto Level 3 Public Services or a full time sports

course.

Motor Vehicle Maintenance Qualification: ABC Level 1 Award

Duration: 2 Years

Days & Times: Year 10 Wednesday 1-4pm

Uniform/Equipment: Overalls & steel toe capped boots.

About the CourseThis introductory course in Motor Vehicle Maintenance covers health and safety, basic

car care and repair such as checking engine oil levels and changing a tyre. By studying

the Swindon College’s Motor Vehicle course learners could be looking at a career in

automotive repair, brake and exhaust fitting, or breakdown services.

ProgressionOn completion of this introduction course

as a school leaver, students could either

progress onto a full time Level 1 Diploma

course in Motor Vehicle, or Level 2 in

vehicle fitting procedures. Alternatively

look for employment as a

Motor Vechicle Apprentice.

Cycle and Motor Bike Maintenance and Repair Qualification: Level 1 Award

Duration: 1 Year

Days & Times: Wednesday 9-12am

Uniform/Equipment: Boots & overalls

About the CourseCarrying out your own cycle maintenance is not only satisfying, but now a major

growth industry. This would suit any student that is interested in cycle maintenance

either as a hobby or possibly as an employment route. You will also cover basic

maintenance and inspections of motor bikes. This course will run for half a day, for one

year. It is suitable for students in either Year 10 or Year 11.

Examples of some of the units that will be covered are:

• Remove and replace a cycle gear assembly

• Remove and replace a cycle rim brake assembly

• Carry out a systematic cycle check.

could progress onto a full time

programme at 16.

About the CourseChoosing a Sports course at Swindon College will allow students to explore

the various avenues available for further study, or employment in the

growing Sports industry, such as Sports Coaching, Personal

Trainer or Sports Therapist.
