HALAKHIC CORNER
Q: Why is there a custom to eat dairy on Shavuot?
A: One of the most well-known customs of Shavuot is the Minhag
to eat dairy. There are many fascinating explanations offered as
to why this custom developed. Rav Moshe Isserles, in his
Ashkenazic additions to Shulchan Aruch (O”C 494/2), writes
that we add a dairy component to our Yom Tov meal in
remembrance of the special Korban (offering) offered on
Shavuot, the “two bread” offerings. By starting our meal with
bread and dairy foods and then subsequently eating bread and
meat foods, we remember the unique Korban offered on
Shavuot which consisted of two breads as well. Rav Yisrael
Meir Kagan, in Mishnah Brurah, suggests an alternative
explanation. He writes that when the Jewish people received
the Torah on Shavuot, they learned how difficult it is to properly
slaughter an animal to eat its meat. The Jewish people did not
have the requisite knives and other equipment needed to
properly slaughter an animal, and therefore they resorted to
eating only dairy foods on Shavuot. In remembrance of this
occurrence, the custom developed to eat dairy on this Yom Tov.
A more novel approach is taken by the Yalkut Yitzchak. He
contends that before the giving of the Torah, the Jewish people
thought that milk was prohibited under the prohibition of Eiver
Min HaChai – eating a limb from a living animal. Only after the
Torah was given did the people learn that milk was not included
in this prohibition, and began to consume milk and dairy
products. As such, the custom remained for people to make
special efforts to eat dairy on Shavuot.

Shavuot 5780 (May 28-30, 2020)
and
Week of May 31-June 5, 2020
By Rabbi Elazar Muskin
As we celebrate Shavuot and the week after the Chag during the Covid-19 crisis, the
following guide has been compiled to help in lieu of davening with a Minyan. May we all
merit a healthy and uplifting Yom Tov.
Erev Shavuot – Thursday May 28th
• Recite a regular Shacharit. Omit Tachanun and Avenu Malkenu and Lamenatzeach
between Ashrei and U’va L’Tziyon.
• Remember to make an Eruv Tavshilin before Yom Tov starts. Candles should be lit by
7:40. Shkiah is 7:58 PM.
• When lighting Yom Tov candles recite Lehadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov and Shehecheyanu.
Unlike a regular Shabbat, on Yom Tov recite the Brakha before lighting the candles.
• Maariv should start after Tzet Hakochavim which is 8:34 PM.
• Recite the phrase VaYedaber Moshe before the Amida.
• The Maariv Amida is a Yom Tov Amida.
• At your Seudah recite the Yom Tov Kiddush with Shehecheyanu.
First Day – Friday May 29th
• If you stay up the whole night to learn, the earliest time to put on Talit with a Brakha is
4:46 AM. Arrange to daven Vatikin by reaching the Shacharit Amida at 5:44 AM.
The following are instructions for those who stay up all night observing Tikun Lel
Shavuot:
o Before starting Shacharit go to the bathroom, wash your hands like you would when
awaking in the morning, followed by the Brakha Al Netilat Yadayim.
o If you didn’t sleep at least thirty minutes during the night it is best to hear the Brakha
of Elohai Neshama, and Hama’avir Sheina from someone who slept during the night.
In such a scenario one answers Amen upon hearing these Brakhot. If this is not
possible omit these Brakhot and have them in mind when saying the Brakha of
Mechaye HaMeitim in the Amida.
o If one did not sleep at least 30 minutes during the night, he should hear Birkhot
HaTorah from someone who has slept on Thursday evening. He should answer Amen
upon hearing the Brakhot. If this isn’t possible, one should have these Brakhot in
mind when saying the Brakha of Ahavah Rabbah before Shema. In such a situation,
right after Shacharit he should learn a Torah portion. Reciting a Torah passage will
suffice.
• Shacharit – Regular Yom Tov davening. Birkhot Kriat Shema begins with HaMeir
LaAretz.
• Recite a full Hallel with Brakhot.
• Do not say Anim Zemirot. This is recited only when davening with a Minyan.
• Shir Shel Yom is for Friday.
• Do not say the Tefilot recited before taking out the Torah. They are recited only when
davening with a Minyan.
• There is no requirement to recite the poem of Akdamot, but one is permitted to do so.
• The Torah reading (from a Chumash) is Shemot (19:1 – 20:23) and Bamidbar 28: 26-31).
Haftorah is from Sefer Yechezkel (1:1-28).
• There is no requirement to recite the poem Yah Eli before Musaf, but one is permitted to
do so.
• Recite the Yom Tov Musaf with the Shavuot insertions.
• One may cook on Friday for Shabbat (in a halakhically permissible way) because we
prepared an Eruv Tavshilin on Thursday.
Second Day of Shavuot – Friday night
• When Shabbat follows a Yom Tov, it is preferable to start Shabbat early. Daven Mincha at
6:15 PM which is before Plag HaMincha which is at 6:29 PM. Only start Maariv after
6:29 PM. Remember to repeat Kriat Shema before going to sleep.
• Recite a regular Yom Tov Mincha. The Amida is a Yom Tov Amida.
• Candles should not be lit before 6:29 PM and no later than 7:40 PM. Shkiah is @ 7:58
PM.
• When lighting Yom Tov candles recite Lehadlik Ner Shel Shabbat v’Yom Tov and
Shehecheyanu.
• Maariv should begin only after 6:29 PM.
• Skip Kabbalat Shabbat and begin with Mizmor Shir L’yom HaShabbat.
• Skip Bameh Madlikin.
• In Maariv recite V’Shamaru and VaYedaber Moshe before the Amida.
• The Maariv Amida is a Yom Tov Amida.
• After the Maariv Amida recite Vayechulu but not Magen Avot and Elohenu V’elohei
Avotenu. They are only said when davening with a permanent Minyan.
• At your Seudah recite the Yom Tov Kiddush with Shabbat insertions and Shehecheyanu.
Second Day – Shabbat May 30th
• Regular Shabbat Shacharit. The Amida is a Yom Tov Amida with Shabbat insertions.
• Recite a full Hallel with Brakhot.
• Do not say Anim Zemirot. This is recited only when davening with a Minyan.
• Shir Shel Yom is for Shabbat.
• Megilat Rut is recited when participating in a Minyan. If one wishes to recite Rut, one
may.
• Do not say the Tefilot recited before taking out the Torah on a Yom Tov. They are recited
only when davening with a Minyan.
• The Torah reading (from a Chumash) is Devarim (14:22– 16:17) and Bamidbar (28:26-
31). Haftorah is from Habakkuk (2:20- 3:19). One may recite the poem Yitziv Pitgam, but
there is no requirement to do so.
• Yizkor may be recited without a Minyan. The purpose of Yizkor is to pledge Tzedakah in
memory of our loved ones.
• Skip both chapters of Y’kum Purkan and the Mi Sheberach. They are said only when
davening with a Minyan.
• Even if you are not saying Yizkor one should say Av HaRachamim.
• Musaf is a regular Yom Tov Amida with Shabbat and Shavuot insertions.
• Mincha may be said as early as 1:27 PM but no later than 7:45 PM (Shkiah is @ 7:59
PM).
• During Mincha recite the sentence Va’Ani Tefilati right after U’va L’Tziyon.
• The Amida is a Yom Tov Amida with Shabbat insertions.
• Omit Tzidkatcha Tzedek at Mincha.
• One should begin Seudah Shlishit before Shkiah (7:59 PM).
• Maariv is the regular Saturday night Maariv.
• Recite V’he Noam and V’yeeten Lecha.
• Recite Kiddush Levanah. Look up at the moon and then turn east to say Kiddush
Levanah. If you have no family member with you say the phrase Shalom Alechem –
Alechem Shalom to yourself three times. Say Aleynu at the conclusion of Kiddush
Levanah.
• Shabbat ends 8:44 PM. Recite a complete Havdalah.
Sunday May 31st – Isru Chag
• Recite a regular weekday Shacharit.
• Omit Tachanun and Avenu Malkenu at Shacharit and Mincha.
• Omit Lamenatzeach between Ashrei and U’va L’Tziyon.
Monday June 1st - Thursday June 4th
• Recite a regular weekday Shacharit, Mincha and Maariv.
• Omit Tachanun and Avenu Malkenu at Shacharit and Mincha.
• During Shacharit insert Lamenatzeach between Ashrei and U’va L’Tziyon.
• The last time to recite Kiddush Levanah is Thursday night.
Friday June 5th
• Recite a regular weekday Shacharit with Tachanun and Avenu Malkenu.
• Early Mincha is at 6:25 PM. Earliest candle lighting is at 6:33 PM. A full Kabbalat
Shabbat and Maariv should be recited only after 6:33 PM.
• Candles can be lit between 6:33 PM - 7:44 PM
• If one accepts Shabbat right before Shkiah (8:02 PM), Mincha should begin no later than
7:55 PM.
