A: The 16th century Ashkenazic halakhic authority, the Rema, writes that we have a custom to decorate the Beit Knesset with grass and flowers on Shavuot as a remembrance of the great joy we had at the time we received the Torah (OC 494:3).The Mishna Brura, authored by Rav Yisrael Meir Ha'Kohen Kagan (1839- 1933) explains the Rema to mean that we decorate the Beit Knesset with flowers just like Har Sinai was decorated with flowers at the time we received the Torah. He further notes that there is a custom for people to put up trees in the Beit Knesset as well, as a reminder that on Shavuot the amount of fruits the trees will produce is determined (494:10). Rav Ovadia Yosef (1920-2013) suggests another reason connected to the experience we had at Har Sinai. He refers to the Gemara Shabbat page 88a which states that every saying that came out of G-d’s mouth at Har Sinai filled the world with a beautiful fragrance. Thus, he explains we place flowers and trees in the Beit Knesset as their pleasant smell reminds us of the atmosphere we experienced at Har Sinai (Yechava Da’at 4:33). FROM YICC’S SEFER HA’MINHAGIM

PARASHAT BECHUKOTAI & YOM YERUSHALAYIM:

1) On Parashat Bechukotai the Tochacha is given to the Baal Koreh.

The Tochacha is read quickly and in a lower voice than usual.

2) On Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Sivan we recite Av Harachamim before Musaf.

3) This year Erev Yom Yerushalayim is on Shabbat, therefore we do not say Tzidkatcha

Tzedek or El Male at Shabbat Mincha.

4) Tahanun is not recited on Yom Yerushalyaim at Shacharit and Mincha.

5) On Yom Yerushalayim we say a complete Hallel without the Brakhot. We recite

Hallel after the Hazan finishes Kaddish Titkabel right before Aleynu. After Hallel the

prayers for the IDF and the State of Israel are recited.

6) A mourner should not lead the service for Shacharit on Yom Yerushalayim.

ROSH HODESH – 12th OF SIVAN:

1) Avelim may serve as Chazan for Mincha and Maariv, but not Shacharit and Musaf.

2) If an Avel during the 12 months of mourning for a parent, or 30 days for any other

relative, has a Yahrzheit for a parent on Rosh Hodesh, he may serve as Chazan for all

of the Tefilot including Shacharit, but should not serve as Chazan for Hallel.

3) On Rosh Hodesh we don’t say Lamnatzeach between Asheri and Uva L’Tzion. We

also don’t say El Erech Apayim before taking out the Sefer Torah.

4) The Hazan for Musaf stops after Uva L’Tzion before saying Chatzi Kaddish. This

allows everyone time to take off and put away their Tefilin. After everyone has put

away their Tefilin the Hazan says Chatzi Kaddish, followed by the silent Amidah.

5) The Mourners Kaddish is not recited after the Shir Shel Yom, but rather after Borchi

Nafshi.

6) From Rosh Hodesh Sivan through the 12th of Sivan we do not recite Tahanun. We do,

however, recite El Erech Apayim before taking out a Sefer Torah on a Monday or

Thursday. We also say Lamnatzeach between Asheri and Uva L’Tzion.

7) On the Shabbatot during the period between Rosh Hodesh Sivan and the 12th of Sivan

we do not recite Tzidkatcha Tzedek or El Male at Shabbat Mincha.

8) On the Shabbatot between Rosh Hodesh Sivan and the 12th of Sivan we do recite Av

HaRachamim before Musaf. This includes Erev Shavuoth that is on a Shabbat.

TREE OF LIFE YICC’s Tree of Life is located on the 2nd fl near our Youth Rooms. One way to commemorate a Simcha is to dedicate a leaf engraved with the date and Simcha on our Shul’s Tree of Life. Whether it be a Birth, Bar/Bat-

Mitzvah, Wedding or Anniversary, our Shul’s Tree of Life is the perfect way to permanently celebrate your Simcha.

Many of our members have leaves on our Tree that were dedicated in their honor. It would be so nice to dedicate new leaves to honor new celebrations: marriages, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, babies…!
