Antalya in BriefThe city of Antalya is located on the rocky southern coast of Turkey along theMediterranean and stretches along the bay bearing its name. One is immediatelystruck by the Taurus Mountains rising some 3000 meters above this coastline, intersparsed with valleys of varying size. Land and sea everywhere meet the beachesstretching for miles of the steep cliffs. Translucent streams, emerging from theTaurus, water the plains on their journey to the Mediterranean and cascade into thesea.

Antalya has been continuously inhabited since its founding in 159 BC by King AttalosII, who named the city Attalaeia after himself. The Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks andOttomans successively occupied the city. Antalya has been the most rapidly developingmetropolis in modern Turkey, with agriculture, small scale industry and tourismboosting its economy. The city presents several amenities such as the AntalyaArcheological Museum, the Citadel with its historical heritage houses, the leisurecenter in the Marina, and several shopping plazas. Sites of antiquity are the Aspendostheater with its 50.000 seat capacity, ancient cities of Perge, Termessos and Phaselis,Lara Beach, Olympos National Park, Duden waterfalls. The Opera Festival in theAspendos Theater is a major cultural event.

The plant life of Antalya and of the Turkish Mediterranean coast is extremely varied.Visitors can witness the lush maquis and forests on the mountain slopes and cactuses, cotton and seasame plantations, and citrus and banana groves on the plains.

In Antalya the four seasons only appear on the calendar as there is no real winterhere. The summers are hot and rainless while the other months are warm and oftenrainy. The average temperature is 24.5 degree cantigrates in September with anaverage humidity of 60 %.
