Hello Marathon Friends and Participants,

My name is Kelly Burleson and I am the Race Director for the Oklahoma City MemorialKids Marathon.

It is time to start thinking about preparations for the 2014 Oklahoma City Memorial KidsMarathon. The Oklahoma City Memorial Kids Marathon, presented by The Oklahoman andAccess Midstream, will be Sunday, April 27, 2014 in downtown Oklahoma City. Our goal isto teach kids a healthy lifestyle by staying active and choosing to stay fit. You can help bygetting involved and making a difference in kids’ lives across our great state. Adopt a school, sponsor a child, or just encourage your children to get up, and get moving!

This race is unlike any other because it combines encouraging our children to live healthy, while teaching them about life and the Lessons Learned that grew from the Oklahoma Citybombing on April 19, 1995. It is a run to remember and a race to show that we can eachmake a difference in this world by teaching “good choices” to our youth…our future leaders.

Registration is open. This is a great time to go online at www.okcmarathon.com and registeryour child or school group, and start logging those miles! The earlier you get involved, themore time you have to encourage, instill, and enjoy this event with your children.

With over 3,000 children running the final 1.2 miles of their marathon on April 27, 2014, it will be an amazing fun-filled day! Keep us posted on your ongoing progress by emailingstories and photos to [email protected].

Enjoy your training and we will see you at the start line!

Oklahoma City Memorial Kids Marathon – Building Character is a Marathon, Not a Sprint!

What is the OKC Memorial Kids Marathon?

On April 19, 1995 a terrible tragedy happened in Oklahoma when the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Buildingwas bombed and so many lives were lost. This is an important part of Oklahoma history that teacheshope in the face of tragedy and the power of a community working together.

In memory of those lives lost and in honor of the heroes who emerged, as well as our stand fortolerance and against violence, our school will participate in this year’s Oklahoma City Memorial KidsMarathon. This event as a whole consists of a Marathon, Half Marathon, Marathon Relay, Marathon5K and the Kids Marathon.

The kids log 25 miles that they have run or walked starting now until the day of the run. The last 1.2miles will be run at the Marathon. When the students have finished this event, they will have run theentire distance of an adult marathon! What an accomplishment!

The cost to participate is $10 per child. The money goes to support the Oklahoma City NationalMemorial in its efforts to educate against violence. If adults want to run/walk with their child, theymust register with a fee of $20.

When is the Kids Marathon?

Sunday, April 27th, 2014. The race starts at 8:15am, but we must be there early to line up and park.

We will be leaving from school on the morning of the race. Transportation will be provided from schoolto the race and back if needed, otherwise, parents can caravan. More information on transportationwill be provided at a later date. If parents are not going with their child, they are responsible for gettingtheir child to school and picking them back up at school.

Why is our school participating in the OKC Memorial Kids Marathon?

We want our children to begin to engage in habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle. Walking and runningthe distance of a marathon is a good way for kids to learn to make a goal and commit to seeing itthrough in order to have a healthier mind and body.

Building character is a race not a sprint and we want our children to learn the importance of buildinga strong character through their own positive choices. Throughout our school’s participation in theKids Marathon, we will be encouraging students to make good choices in their interactions withothers, as well as realize how their actions can affect others in positive ways.

The school with the highest percentage of participation receives $500 dollars toward their PEdepartment and an amazing traveling trophy! The school with the highest number of participantsalso receives $500 and a traveling trophy.

Students receive a commemorative T-shirt and a finisher’s medal to be proud of!

Fundraising and Training Ideas

Training:

Have a healthy tip of the week announced over the PA system each day. Encouragestudents to journal how they’ve incorporated this tip into their daily lives and sharethese journal entries voluntarily during class meetings and at school assemblies.

Have training buddies – Pair students in younger classes with students in olderclasses to get together once a week or so and run/walk together. This could be donewith reading buddies. Older students can serve as mentors and set a positiveexample as readers and as healthy kids!

Create a school walking club before and after school. Ask parents to volunteer tooversee students logging miles for 30 minutes before or after school outside or inthe gym.

Students can log miles as a warm up in PE class.

Use training as a brain break – measure off ¼ mile paths in the hall or outside andgo walk them (or run them outside) when students have been engaged in learningfor a long period of time and need to wiggle.

Create a classroom bulletin board (or a school bulletin board or wall) to displaymileage goals. Celebrate these at a school wide assemble weekly! Offer smallrewards at each major mileage goal until 25 is reached.

Fundraising for registration cost:

Partner with a local business or your partner in education. Ask them to sponsor kidswho want to participate but cannot pay. Have members from this business comewalk/run with kids during the day to demonstrate healthy adult role models.

Students can ask for sponsors to donate a certain amount of money per mile or ½mile they walk/run in order to reach $10.

Ask PTO to sponsor some children.

Please contact Shanda for more training and fundraising ideas!

PROJECT SAFE START - THE SAFE Starting SYSTEM!

On April 27, 2014 we are going to make it easy for you and your kids to have a great and safeexperience at the Kids Marathon!

When you get to the start/finish area - we will have signs that will be in areas we call “zones.” Thosezones will be for schools to gather by the first letter of the name their school starts with. Schoolscan make their own signs for their schools, but they must remain in the correct alphabetical zone.

When it is time to start the race – we will do a progressive wave start. In other words – each schoolzone will be released right after the other zone in alphabetical order. We will alternate this starteach year. We do a progressive wave start so school groups can run together safely! Safety NetRunners in bright colored t-shirts will hold alphabetical signs and participants are asked to lineup behind those signs that correlate with the first letter of their school group. If you are not with aschool group, line up behind the Fun Zone sign. Zones will be announced alphabetically until all 7 zones have been released.

Clearly marked signs will be posted for the Wave Zones at the start line, and also in the Kids FinishCorral, to allow school coordinators and parents to easily find their children after the race. PLEASEbe sure and discuss this with you child before the race. Finding the designated meet up area priorto the race.

The order you will assemble at the start line is:

1. If you are in schools that begin with the letters A,B,C, or D – you will be in the “first wave zone”in the front.

2. If you are in schools that begin with the letters E, F, G, or H – you will be in the “second wavezone” behind the first group.

3. If you are in schools that begin with the letters I, J, K, or L – you will be in the “third wave zone”behind the second group.

4. If you are in schools that begin with the letters M, N, O, or P – you will be in the “fourth wavezone” behind the third group.

5. If you are in schools that begin with the letters– Q, R, S, or T you will be in the “fifth wave zone”behind the fourth group.

6. If you are in schools that begin with the letters– U, V, W, X, Y, or Z you will be in the “sixth wavezone” behind the fifth group.

7. If you are not part of a school group – you will assemble in the back at the “Fun Zone” as the“seventh wave zone” behind the sixth group.

Have FUN and we can’t wait to see you all Sunday morning April 27, 2014 for your Run to Remember!

Oklahoma City Memorial Kids Marathon 2014

2014 Kids Finishers Corral – Child Connect System

The Oklahoma City Memorial Kids Marathon is dedicated to a safe and enjoyable event for the kids, parents and teachers. To ensure better safety in connecting everyone after the race, the 2014 KidsFinishers Corral Child Connect System is as follows:

• Only adults and kids with either Kids Marathon race bibs or tear tags to claim a child areallowed into the Kids Finishers Corral – brightly colored volunteers and a very visible OKCPolice presence will be in place the entire time.

• Each kid is issued a bib to wear on race day – each bib has a “tear tag” at the bottom with thesame number. Parents/teachers will be required to wear or produce the matching tag for thekid to leave the Kids Corral area.

• You will see two separate entrances into the Kids Finishers Corral: One for kids and adultswho are registered participants and one for adults who have a tear tag to claim a child. Pleaseuse the correct entrance.

• School Team Captains: please collect the tear tags and keep them with your student roster. Ifyou are responsible for your whole school team we will have special exit lanes for you and yourschool group team to exit together. You will be asked to produce the roster and correspondingnumber of tags – children will be counted and accounted for and then exited under yoursupervision. We suggest keeping your tear tags together on a key ring or twist tie with yourteam roster. For every child in your group, there needs to be an adult who has theircorresponding tear tag. Either the team captain can be responsible for all of them, or you candivide them up and give them to registered adults with your school so that each adult isresponsible for specific kids. Please make sure all kids and parents on your team are awareof these procedures.

• Parents: You will have several lanes to exit with your child. Make sure you have your tag outand make sure your kid’s bib is still on them – and you can exit to enjoy the activities outside ofthe Kids Corral across the street at First Church.

• If you do not have your matching tag or claim that it is lost, you will be subject to closerexamination by trained volunteer(s) or the OKC Police before you are allowed to exit.

Thank you for your compliance with this system. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable dayand we appreciate the steps you are taking to help ensure a healthy lifestyle through this marathonand April 27th is their Victory Lap. Let’s make this day a celebration of their achievement!
