We’re looking for recipes that have worked for you in the past -that are easy to prepare- or recipes that take time but are well worth the effort. It seems that we have a sweet tooth (surprised?); we have lots of recipes for cakes, cookies and desserts. How about some good vegetable ideas? Or appetizers, soups, or salads, or breads? Richter, a dear friend, teacher, and library patron. The gifts honoring Mrs. Richter will help the Library Foundation further its mission of enhancing library services and programs. Author Leonard Miele visited the library February 27th to give a slide presentation on Voice of the Tide: The Cape Cod Heritage of Katharine Lee Bates. Miele shared his passion and knowledge of Katharine Lee Bates, author of “America the Beautiful,” with an enthusiastic crowd of listeners. Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929) was a Falmouth native who described herself as “a shy near-sighted girl always hiding away with a book.” Miele explained how Bates’s “childhood on Cape Cod influenced her thinking and writing” as she developed into a respected scholar, a Wellesley College English professor, and a prolific poet and author. Miele read entries from Bates’s diaries and some of her poems which are rarely seen by the public. This event was sponsored by The Hanson Public Library Foundation, Inc. Save the date! Saturday, November 13th, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Library Annual Open House featuring magician, live music, and light refreshments. Award-winning author Michael Tougias spoke before a full house at the Hanson Public Library on Saturday, May 1 st . Sponsored by the Hanson Public Library Foundation, Mr. Tougias gave an exciting account of the events covered in his recent book, Overboard, a True Blue-Water Odyssey of Disaster and Survival. The book, a chronicle of the catastrophic journeys of two yachts caught in an early spring Atlantic storm in 2005, marks the eighteenth published work for the writer from Massachusetts. When asked what he learned from working with the survivors of this, and other, maritime disasters, the author replied that he has developed a deep grati- tude for life. He shared with the crowd that the men and women he has profiled are regular people who have displayed a remarkable ability to meet deadly challenges. Delving into the mind of a person who has come through such a challenge fascinates Mr. Tougias, and has inspired him to believe that “gratitude is the most important word in the English language.” Library Summer Hours July 1st through Sept. 5th Monday and Friday 9 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday 12 to 8 p.m.

WEEKLY “GREEN” PROGRAMS

Ages 0 to 3 — Wee Readers- Fridays, 9:30 to 10:00- Parents and caregivers, along with infant and toddlers, enjoy stories, songs and finger play. Program dates are 6/25, 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/23, 7/30, 8/6, 8/13, 8/20.

Ages 3 to 7 — Craft and Story- Fridays, 10:30 to 11:30- The youth services staff will read “green” stories and will do a “green” craft. Program dates are 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/30, 8/6, 8/13, 8/20.

Ages 7 to 10 — Weekly Read-alongs, Fridays, 10:30 to 11:30- Program participants need to be able to read alone and will read “green stories” and complete activities in a group setting. Books selected for these groups will be available for purchase and checkout on Saturday, June, 19th. Program dates are 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/30, 8/6, 8/13, 8/20.

Ages 8 and up — Surviving Summer Reading– A reading and gaming night. Program includes silent reading for one half hour, fol-lowed by fun and games. Computer games, Wii games, and old fashioned board games will follow reading.

Tweens: Ages 8 to 12 will meet on Tuesdays, 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Teens: Ages 13 to 19 will meet on Tuesdays, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Ages 6 to 10 — Ask Why?, Thursdays, 3:30 to 4:30- A “green” science activity workshop. Participants will read stories and conduct related green experiments. Programs dates are 7/1, 7/8, 7/15, 7/29, 8/5, 8/13, 8/19.

Summer Book group– A book and movie discussion. Open to any ages who are able to read the featured book titles.

Featured books will be Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen, and the first of the Percy Jackson Series, The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan. Books will be available for purchase and checkout on June 19th. Group will meet on Thursday evenings 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the following days: 7/1, 7/8, 7/15, 7/29, 8/5, 8/13, 8/19.

Hanson Public Library 2010 Summer Reading Program

A state wide summer reading program sponsored in part by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the Hanson Public Library and the Friends of the Hanson Library.

Fun for all ages. Register for any or all programs by stopping by the library on June 19th between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Registra-tions will also be accepted by email at [email protected].

Help our reading garden to grow. Sign up on June 19th to be a summer reader, and begin tallying your reading hours and books.

For every book you read, you may add a flower to our garden, pick a prize from the prize closet, and enter to win the grand prize drawing. Winners will be picked on Friday, August 20th. Prizes donated and paid for by the FRIENDS OF THE HANSON LIBRARY.

PLEASE STOP LAUGHING AT ME by Jodee Blanco

Hanson Public Library Community Read for the month of August is

Please Stop Laughing at Me… one woman’s inspirational story, by Jodee Blanco. This book is a powerful, unforgettable memoir that chronicles Jodee’s journey through elementary and high school and how she overcomes bullying and grows up to be a successful publishing executive.

Books will be available for purchase on July 30th. Book discussion will take place at the library on Thursday, August 19, 7 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

SATURDAY, JUNE 19TH, 2010 - 9:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m.—Kick off for summer reading, registration, moonwalk, and a book bag craft.

THURSDAY, JUNE 24TH, 2010 - 3:30 p.m.—A Mad Science of Greater Boston Special Event Interactive Show. Pre-K through elementary school age. Pre- registration is required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Hanson Library.

THURSDAY, JUNE 24TH, 2010 - 7 to 8:30 p.m. for parents and caregivers. Dr. Jean Ciborowski Fahey PhD, Director of the Reading Part-nership at South Shore Hospital, author of Textbooks and the Students Who Can’t Read Them, and producer of the video Raising Readers, will do a presentation on the effects of family literacy practices on children’s readiness to read. This program is free. Pre-registration is required.

FRIDAY, JUNE 25TH, 2010 - 9:30 to 10:30 and 1:30 to 2:30—Read with Lucy, a black lab dog, trained to help children become better read-ers. Lucy will be at the library for two reading sessions. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited. Pre-K through elementary school age.

TUESDAY, JULY 20TH, 2010 - 6 to 8 p.m.—The Hanson Public Library will host award winning pastel artist Gregory John Maichack to pre-sent “Van Gogh’s Starry Night” a free expressive pastel painting workshop for adults. This pastel painting workshop is for both sheer begin-ners to advanced participants. This program is supported in part by the Friends of the Hanson Library and a grant from the Hanson Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Pre-registration is required.

FRIDAY, JULY 23RD, 2010 - 10:30 a.m.—BRENNER FAMILY MAGIC SHOW presents likeable lizards and more. Combining magic tricks and animals. This show is sponsored by the Friends of the Hanson Library. Program is free, registration is required.

Tobin Memorial Children’s Book Collection established in 2008 and housed in the library.
