Dear Search Committee,

I write to express my interest for the position of Web Application Developer for Web and Interactive Communications at Illinois State University. I found this position on Illinois State’s job opportunities web page and believe I would be an excellent fit. Please consider my resume as you look to fill this position.

In my current role as Web Designer/Developer for CAS-IT, I research, test, and train others to use the website template I constructed using Jekyll (a ruby based static site generator). I researched the needs of CAS-IT’s websites and compared them to the capabilities of Jekyll. When constructing the template there were many large scope concerns I had to address like branding, useability, build times, ease of utilizing the template, and integrating the templates’ content into the back end team’s CMS. The target audiences I focused on for our templates were with twofold internal (builders & editors) and external (viewers/users). I also tested for performance, security, accessibility, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) throughout the process. My experience shows I will be able to balance providing a large scope approach with fine detail in creating templates for your office.

I regularly utilize Google analytics on our websites to see users’ expectations and traffic as a means to understand-ing the direction of our projects. When working on department sites I also utilize Google Chrome developer tools for many different services like the elements or performance tabs but, especially for their audits. I combine the audit reports with Google Analytics to be able to grasp a wide scope of user experiences, useability, expectations, and areas of improvement. My experience using developer tools, Google analytics, and testing will help provide a smooth transition for this position.

At CAS-IT I strive to make our websites usable for as many people as possible. I focus on WAI ARIA standards and best practices to better equip more users. When testing I first look at automated checks for simple (often syntax) errors, and then I follow up with manual testing. When I perform automated testing I use WAVE, Google DevTools Audits, and Micro-soft’s ‘Accessibility Insights for web’ after I manually test sites via NVDA, JAWS, and keyboard controls. My familiarity your office’s standards, needs, and procedures for useability/accessibility show I will have a quicker time to adjust to this position than others.

It is a passion of mine to encourage and equip others in their technical pursuits and professional growth. Each semester I supervise student workers and graduate assistants, and I continually look for projects in our office that align with their past experiences and the students’ areas of interest. I encourage the students to take ownership of the projects including the research and serve as an aid for any questions that may have. I help with non-technical users as well via Cherwell tickets, and during meetings with faculty and staff. My desire to help equip others in their digital literacy proves I would be a good representative of your office.

Overall, my experience in front end web design and development at Illinois State University reinforce my fit for the position of Web Application Developer for Web and Interactive Communications. Thank you very much for your consider-ation, and I look forward to hearing from you.
