MessageToEagle.com - Thirteen holes for stone foundation posts have

been discovered in the Toho Kanga area of Fujiwara-kyo, the Imperial

capital of Japan for sixteen years, between 694 and 710 AD.

'When the capital was relocated to Fujiwara-kyo, the east side may have been

dedicated to residential quarters for imperial family members or for other

important purposes," he said.

"The discovery could be a crucial turning point in research on Fujiwara-kyo,' said Masashi

Kinoshita, a professor emeritus of archaeology at Tokyo Gakugei University, called the discovery

'groundbreaking.'

'Recent excavations have found that Fujiwara-kyo’s central government compound had been built

on a grandiose scale that equaled that of the later capitals Heijo-kyo and Heian-kyo. The first

capital city to have a geometrically-arranged grid layout, the city (5 km by 5 km) covered 50

times the area of Emperor Temmu’s Kiyomihara Palace complex.

The capital city had great gates and a grand audience hall the Daigokuden built in the continental

style and the palace occupied an area measuring about 1 square km. These were the first palace

structures in Japan to have a tile roof in the Chinese style.

The palace and other government office buildings were encircled by great earthen walls and a

moat. Each of the four walls had three gates; Suzakumon, the main gate, stood at the center of

the south wall.' ( source.

Five square-shaped holes with rounded edges were also found at a site about 20 meters to

the west of Toho Kanga. Each side measured between 1.5 meters and 1.9 meters. It isbelieved these holes were used to build a large structure supported by posts sunk into theground.

The location of the two buildings suggest they were part of city planning, according to the

researchers.
