BHP Billiton Challenge #1
Optimizing Mine Headings Availability
Development productivity is strongly related to heading availability. Increasing our
heading availability would increase development productivity which in turn
improves overall production rates. There is a large variation in the number of
headings available between monthly to weekly to daily schedules. Generally
development is scheduled at four levels: Budget (yearly), Monthly Operating Plan
(MOP), weekly, and Execution (day to day actual availability).
Data Provided
Data provided includes metres from monthly development schedules, weekly mine
schedules, and completed shift sheets (all data aggregated in one spreadsheet)
Potential Questions to answer
• What optimisation techniques can be developed to streamline the process and
address the variations in number of headings?
BHP Billiton Challenge #2
Removal of Steel from Our Underground Ore Stream
Olympic Dam is an underground mine, meaning we have to constantly rehab areas of the mine that we have
explored previously. This means installing cable bolts, split sets etc. as ground support. When we mine new
areas that have previously be rehabilitated, we have the issue of this ground support steel entering our ore
stream. This has the capability to damage conveyor belts, block feeders and bog our crusher.
When the ore enters our ore passes, it is fed through grizzlies to stop any large rocks or steel from entering.
From the ore passes it is fed in to an underground rail system where steel has the ability to stop the trains by
damaging the catenary. The ore is then fed directly from the trains to the crusher where steel has the ability
to block crusher. The ore then travels through a range of feeders and conveyor belts as it moves towards
the ore haulage system. There are a few mag belts underground and one on the surface directly after the
feeders to remove as much of the steel from the conveyors.
Ideally removing the steel before it hits the crusher and conveyor system is the most logical solution.
Potential Questions to answer
• How can we reduce the amount of steel in our underground mining operation?
• How can we reduce the amount of steel getting through our grizzlies?
• How can we reduce the amount of steel travelling through our conveyor system?
Increasing the Rate of ‘Direct Tipping’
Moving ore from the source directly to the primary crushing facility as safely and cost effectively as possible
is a key objective of most mining operations.
At Prominent Hill, ore is mined in the open pit using excavators in a conventional manner paired with a fleet
of 793 Caterpillar haul trucks. However because of ore body complexity (poly metallic, multiple copper
mineral species, variable grades etc.) not all ore mined is required for immediate crushing. When the hauled
ore does not meet the feed specifications at that moment, it is stockpiled on the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and
subsequently fed using an alternate smaller dedicated mining fleet (Re-handle Fleet).
The process of initiating ‘direct tip’ is currently not systemised and relies on human intervention. The default
position is for ore to be stockpiled in the first instance, unless otherwise directed. The challenge is to utilise
the current data and systems available to maximise ‘direct tip’ opportunities through automation whilst
maintaining blend requirements.
Available Data
• Information and specifications of the material being mined (hauled), recorded in real time through a
wireless mesh-network.
• Information and specifications of the material being fed to the crusher (i.e. execution of a target blend),
recorded in real time through a wireless mesh-network.
• Stockpiled ore attributes.
OZ Minerals Challenge
SA Government Challenge #1
Reducing exploration risk associated with SA IOCG systems
South Australia hosts globally significant Iron-oxide-copper-gold (IOGC) deposits such as Olympic Dam and
Prominent Hill. These deposits are buried under deep cover and exploration for new discoveries in this
region is high risk and very expensive. Exploration methods currently involve combining remotely sensed
geophysical data with information gained through sampling of drill core to help define drill targets. Recent
studies have identified a number of IOGC system indicators such as key elements, geochemical vectors and
mineral alteration systems. It is highly desirable within the exploration industry to minimise the number of
drill holes required to make a discovery. The goal of this challenge is to combine all available data in 3D
space and produce a vector toward higher grade IOCG alteration targets.
Successful outcomes may include:
• Identifying patterns in spectral logs of drill core that provide a vector toward higher grade alteration.
• Predictive analytics, utilising a number of data types to provide a drill target or prospective region.
• Understanding which datasets best explain known IOCG deposits.
• Quantification of risk/identification of areas requiring further sampling.
SA Government Challenge #2
Core Mineral Visualization
The HyLogger™ core scanner is a rapid spectroscopic core and chip logging and imaging system developed
by CSIRO. The Hylogger data allows mineral explorers to view high resolution drillcore imagery and
associated spectral data. This challenge is to find a way to evolve the high resolution RGB 3 band image
into a visual mineral interpretation tool by integrating the core registered spectra dataset.
Objective: To classify an RGB 3 band image of core to produce a high resolution spectral mineral
interpretation of the surface.
Successful outcomes may include:
• Derive the mineral identification from the coarse grained spectra. Almost always there are mixtures of
minerals contributing to the specra.
• Classify the high resolution image into spatially coherent classes using the RGB bands.
• Assign mineral identification from the spectra to the high resolution imagery.
• Colourise the imagery according to classes.
The data supplied for the challenge are:
• A high resolution 3 band image 726 pixels x 465248 lines
• Two coregistered spectral files 3752 spectra (124 image lines/spectra). Spectra of VSWIR covers 380 –
2500nm. Spectra of TIR covers 6000 to 14500nm.

Intellectual Property
Should I sign an agreement with my hackathon team?
Promising startups sometimes fail because of disputes between founders.
Often these disputes arise from ambiguity over who contributed and who
owns what. Don't take our word for it, consider some of these examples:
equity-before-you-go-to-deep/
• http://www.bothsidesofthetable.com/2011/05/09/the-co-founder-mythology/
• http://www.shakelaw.com/blog/dont-get-winklevossed-get-writing/
Don’t let this happen to you! We highly recommend signing a co-founder
agreement or hackathon collaboration agreement. Here are two excellent,
free documents for you to pick from:

Occupational health and safety 1 of 2
OH&S refers to policies, procedures, legislations and activities, which aim to
protect the health and safety of people within a workplace. It is imperative
that your health and safety is never compromised.
• If you have any existing injuries, inform a volunteer
• If you notice any hazards, report them immediately to a volunteer (e.g.
water spillages)
• Minimise the risk of tripping by placing gaffer tape over cords, securing
them to the floor
• Place tables and electrical items close to the power outlets whenever
possible
Occupational health and safety 2 of 2
Think before you lift!
Manual handling occurs when you are lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling,
carrying, moving, holding, re-straining any person or thing. It's unlikely you'll
have to lift anything heavy at this event - do you really need to be moving
that?
First aid
If the person is unconscious or requires an ambulance, dial 000.
Emergency procedures
Details of emergency procedures will be introduced to participants during
induction and on display within the venue. Make yourself familiar with these
procedures at any time you’re onsite.
