Ontario’s Auction & Antique Paper

Joseph Patrick KennedyAfter we moved as a family of six from Toronto to Boston, 1945, I had

never heard such terms as Boston Brahmins, Irish Famine, Boston Commons, Tremont Temple,Scollay Square, Quincy Market of Meeting Hill House. Moreover, I soon found out after we movedto 1145 Dorchester Avenue, in the heart of Dorchester, still another world emerged, namely, thatour family seemed to be the only Protestants in our entire neighbourhood of Savin Hill and itsenvirons of Fields Corner and Uphams Corner. Dad had rented the top two floors of a typicalthree-storey tenement buildng that is so characteristic of Dorchester, South Boston, Roxbury, theSouth Ed and still other neighbourhoods of Boston to this day. We struggled at 1145 “Dot” Ave.on very little income while Dad went to Harvard University, 1945 - 1947. In order to put somechange into my pocket, I used to shine shoes on the portable shoeshine box that my friend WeeWee O’Neil loanedme. On one of those Sundays in 1946, I stationed my shoeshine box two orthree stores down from the old Fields Corner Theatre on Adams Street. I stood in front of a smallvariety store that specialized in selling newspapers, magazines, and tobacco. The painted sign onmy box indicated that shoe shines were ten centres. One Sunday afternoon, I felt lucky as I wasthe only one with a shoe shine box in front of the store. As usual, several guys in their zoot suitswere smoking their cigarettes or cigars and passing the time away in front of the variety store.Fields Corner was always a very busy place on a Sunday afternoon. One such Sunday in the fallof 1946 a four-door black Lincoln limousine pulled up in front of me and my shoebox. On thesidewalk outside the storefront, locals were smoking their Camel, Lucky Strike or Chesterfieldcigarettes. Three very stiff-looking guys got out of the car, all dressed in rather long overcoats

with felt collars. Each was wearinga silk scarf and a Homburg orDerby hat typically worn in thosedays. Two of the guys went intothe store and the third approachedme and wanted a shoe shine. Hestood with his back to the store-front, put a foot up on my shoe-stand, the tradition cut to beingshoe shining. At about the time Ifinished, the other two guys cameout, seemingly in a good mood. Iindicated that I was done. Theman whose shoes I had just pol-ished gave me two quarters. Thiswas a huge tip! I was almostspeechless. The three companionsthen got into their limo and droveoff. One individual standing infront of the store and who watchemy shoe-shine job from beginningto end, said, “Hey, Humba, did youknow who that was?” I just shookmy shoulders indicating that I hadno idea whose shoes I had justshined. He said, “That was HoneyFitz’s son-in-law!” I had no ideawho Honey Fitz was. But I was toldthat Honey Fitz used to be theMayor of Boston and that hisdaughter Rose Fitzgerald had mar-ried this guy who just happened tobe Joseph Kennedy. Later on inlife I connected this sale individualas the father of the futurePresident of the United States,John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and asthe bloke from Boston who madecountless millions in booze duringthe Prohibition days, interactingwith the Chicago boys known as“The Outfit”. I suppose I’ll neverknow what Joe Kennedy was doingin Fields Corners what fall of 1946.But as I look back, what took place

that day has registered with me as one of the more unique things that ever happened to me. Andthe tip was glorious. No wonder I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Kennedy family. What a memory!

Dad’s Best Memoriesand Recollections

by Charles J. Humber

Period postcard illustrating John F. Fitzgerald, Mayor of Boston, 1906 - 1908 and 1910 - 1914

Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy in his heyday

The Unhappy NunThe contemplative routine of the convent was beingdisrupted by the presence of workmen convertingthe electrical service from overhead lines to buriedcable.Mother Superior called the electric company's com-plaint department to ask for help."The profanity these men use constantly is unsuit-able for our community. You must make them stopcursing so much.", said the nun."Very well, sister. But you must make allowances fortheir habits. Even when they are trying to be tactful, they will still tend to call a spade a spade.", said thecompany spokeswoman. Mother superior thenobserved,"I think the term they actually use is '&$*%# shovel!'".

James BondEgotistical Harry was always reminding people thathe played semi-pro baseball."I was the James Bond type of player," he told his friends."I had all sorts of tricks to confuse the opposition.""Batted .007," his wife added.

Gas MenTwo gas company servicemen, a senior trainingsupervisor and a young trainee were out checkingmeters in a suburban neighborhood. They parkedtheir truck at the end of the alley and worked theirway to the other endAt the last house, a woman looking out her kitchenwindow watched the two men as they checked hergas meter.Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisorchallenged his younger coworker to a foot race downthe alley and back to the truck to prove that an olderguy could outrun a younger one.As they came running up to the truck, they realizedthe lady from that last house was huffing and puff-ing right behind them. They stopped and asked herwhat was wrong.Gasping for breath, she replied,“When I see two gas men running as hard as you twowere, I figured I’d better run too!”

I was on a flight to Hong Kong once. The flight would beseven hours long, so I decided to get some shuteye. I wassoon awakened by the stewardess, who asked me if Iwould like some dinner. I said, “What are my choices?”

And she said, “Yes or no.”

Fantastic Facts: Antique Talk's"Conceive it or Not!"

Robert Ripley was working as asports cartoonist at the New YorkGlobe in December 1918 when, un-able to come up with an idea for acolumn, he gathered together a fewoddity stories and made them intoa cartoon he captioned "Believe itor Not." The resulting successwould qualify as copy for Ripley'sown feature. As a tribute to one ofthe most innovative newspaper ar-tisans of all time, I am delighted topresent my own Fantastic Fact fea-ture dedicated to historical objects– Antique Talk's "Conceive it orNot!"• If you find an American ColonialPeriod "Pine Tree Schilling" dated1652, it was very likely struck afterthat date. During much of KingCharles I & II reigns Colonistsdated almost all their schillings"1652" one year prior to the royaldeclaration that new world settlersshould not be striking their owncoins. Today's still existing cur-rency (Pine Tree Shillings are stillavailable at affordable prices)demonstrate that 120+ years be-

fore the American Revolution, the English monarchy were already dreadingwaves of independence rippling across the Atlantic.• Over 100 years ago "signers" collectors began seeking out authentic signaturesof the Declaration of Independence. Whose signature is most valuable today:George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin … John Hancock? –No! The most valuable "signer" is none other than Button Gwinnett – a Savannahgeneral trader (and some say pig farmer) and Georgia Congressional Represen-tative in 1776. Button died in 1777 after being shot in a duel. Though highlycoveted, only about 50 of his authentic signings have been found to date. Thelast one sold at auction fetched $270,000!• Famous "Bakelite" plastic radios fetching hundreds and even thousands of dol-lars at antique shows and auctions are not in fact made out of Bakelite plastic. This is a common misnomer. The cases are made from Catalin. Bakelite is rela-tively dull-colored molding plastic commonly encountered in uninspired casesof brown, black or white. They seldom retail for more than $50. Catalin is adurable translucent plastic casting resin that, after the final production stage ofpolishing, lends itself to vibrant multihued coloring in combinations of chalkwhite, emerald, teal blue, neon orange, tomato red and other colors with mar-bleizing. Catalin began making appearances in radio cabinets around 1935.• An 18th Century woodworking plane signed by Cesar Chelor of Wrentham,Massachusetts fetched over $15,000 at a Suffolk England tool auction in 1998.Chelor, an African-American who was the slave of Deacon Francis Nicholson(1683-1753), is considered to be the first colonial American plane maker.• A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away … no toy action figures were availablewhen a movie called "Star Wars" hit the screens in 1977. Following the movie'sunanticipated popularity, licensee Kenner toys rushed out an "Early Bird (Mail-ing) Kit" in time for Christmas, promising delivery of Luke Skywalker and otheraction figures, "as soon as they are ready." The rush job figures finally producedin spring 1978 were poor in quality compared to large articulated figures likeG.I. Joe but they sold briskly anyway. With quality successfully compromised, the "Dark Side of the Force" had found its way into toy-land.• Available for only a few thousand dollars a decade or two ago, first edition vol-umes of J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novels have skyrocketed in demand and pricein recent years. In excellent condition a 1954 & 1955 three-volume packet of"The Lord of the Rings" is retailing at over $50,000. A clean 1939 first editioncopy of "The Hobbit: or There and Back Again" can exceed $80,000! Once therewas an English literary establishment that damned an English professor's booksabout Middle Earth Hobbits from Shire. Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins and Frodo provedthem all wrong.

PAGE EIGHT THE WOODBRIDGE ADVERTISER CURRENT FROM JANUARY 11, 2018

During my early childhood, teenage and young adultyears, Dawn Farms was adairy farm. It was a small, family farm located in oneof the few patches of topsoiland clay that can be foundin the Canadian Shield. Itwas a self sufficient opera-tion in those days, eventhough we only had a 28-cow herd. But with replace-ment heifers, some bullcalves that were raised forveal, and the odd crossbred beef animal for thefreezer, trade the numbersalways hovered around 50head.

All our cattle were named, and not because they werea purebred herd. It wasjust so much easier toknow who you were talkingabout if names wereassigned. It meant for someinteresting memoriesbecause with the assigningof names also came anaffirmation of character.

For instance, ‘Ornery’ was a stubborn, miserable old coot that needed to bewatched at all times while you squatted beside her attaching the milkingmachine. ‘Tidy’ was a cute, typical dairy-built, polite Ayrshire heifer thatendeared herself to me. Especially when, upon visiting a remote pasture whereour heifer herd summered, I found Tidy with a face full of porcupine quills. I wassimply able to put my arm around her neck and remove all the quills from hervisage with little to no fuss on her part. Imagine my heartbreak when, as a youngcow, Tidy sustained a terrible injury. She did the splits on a patch of ice andnever did get back on her feet. Although considerable effort was put into aidingher, recovery never occurred and the inevitable became Tidy's fate.

Sometimes names were doled out based on where the bovine originated.‘Margaret’ and her daughter ‘Linda’ are prime examples. The farmer we pur-chased them from had a wife and daughter with remarkably similar names, andbuilds. ‘Agatha’ should never have made it to the milking machine assembly line. She was half Charolais, half Holstein and at one point was probably destined forthe freezer. Her fate was altered because she became the pet of my youngerbrother. That large beast with a big heart would let Jeff ride her anywhere. Or ifshe was laying in the pasture, chewing her cud, often times you could see myyounger sibling having a visit with her while laying across her back. An asianstudent from Hong Kong visiting at our farm one day received a thrill of a life-time, taking a ride around the pasture via an unsaddled kine.

As I contemplate metropolitan, urban sprawl, I can't imagine what that experiencemust have been like for a teenager from Hong Kong. Wide open space, blue skies andcows out numbering humans ten to one. Would they even believe him back home?

I now have a daughter-in-law named Sarah and long before she was born we hada ‘Sarah’ in the dairy ranks. How she received that name I'm not sure but Sarah(the cow) is lodged in my memory banks for the near miss I had with her one day. While in a squatted position, placing the milking machine on the four milk tapsconveniently located near the animals hind legs, Sarah, with lightning quicknesstook her right leg from a stationery position and placed it with rapier-like preci-sion on the crotch of my pants. The force and speed of that kick tore bothinseams of those trousers from the jewel chest to the ankles. Thankfully, as wit-nessed years later by the arrival of 3 fathered offspring, it was only the pants thatreceived more than a scare that day.

AAuuccttiioonneeeerr VVeerrnnoonn BBaaiilleeyy’’ss

LLiiffee oonn tthhee FFaarrmmThere was ‘Kate’ and for novelty sake her daughter was called ‘Dupli-Kate’. Yes,they did resemble each other and yes they stood in stalls side by side duringtheir milking careers. ‘Donna’, a purebred Ayrshire, just happened to have thename of an old girlfriend. Over the years, there have been the usual namesbecause of colour or markings or body conformities ‘Blacky’, ‘Star’ and ‘SkinnyMinnie’.

For the ladies at the Woodbridge, I would like to be able to flatter them by tellingstories of Katherine, Eileen and Tina — that they were the top producers in ourherd. But as of yet I haven't had to tell any fabrications in these articles and Iwon’t start now. We did have a Kathy and we did have a Tina, but neither didanything very remarkable.

As I think of those days in my life, more and more names come to me. How some-times while milking, you would yell out a name of a cow to get over, or settledown, only to realize a visitor with the same name was present in the barn. Wehad borrowed a bull once from a neighbour. We nicknamed him ‘Lawrence’ or‘Mr. Goodmurphy’. Care always had to be exercised when you bellowed out acommand for fear that the bull’s owner may be in the stable. It just wouldn’t doto holler, ‘Move your arse Mr. Goodmurphy!’, when the original strode throughthe barn door.

What's in a name? Oh yes, we did have a ‘Rose’.

Vernon• • • • • • • • •

I long ago asked why the bull had a ring in its nose. I was told, simply, to neverget close enough to find out.

Mom was never one to miss an opportunity to drill farm safety into our heads, and told us what had happened. She had been knocked down by the herd bull, taking her off guard. She found herself under the huge, raging beast. As the bulllowered his head to batter her repeatedly, she didn’t give up. Finally, she wasable to get a tight grip on the bull’s nose ring and just kept pulling, steadily turn-ing the tables on just who was in charge.

She was finally able to wrestle the bull down, while pulling herself up off thebullpen floor. While the bull certainly wondered what hit him, Mom bolted fromthe pen, having just saved her own life with strength, presence of mind and sheerdetermination.

• • • • • • • •I climbed over the fence and had taken only a few steps, when I spotted some-thing in the corner of the field. Under the shade of the only tree in the pasture, was the old bull grandad called Gus. I stood my ground, not knowing what to donext. I noticed their was a post in the ground, with a long chain that extendedfrom it towards the bull. At the end of it was a metal ring, attached to the bullsnose. Thinking I was safe, I proceeded to make my way past the bull, but I did-n't make it far.

Suddenly the bull turned towards me, raised it's head, and shook it's massivehorns in my direction. I was shaking in my irrigation boots. I made anotherattempt to get by, but this caused him to lower his head, dig his horns into theground and fling pasture grass up in the air. I let out a yell, then took a few stepsbackwards towards the fence, hay-fork out in front-as if to protect me from afrontal assault.

Granddad, hearing my scream, had come back towards the fence. He told me tostay calm and to hold my ground, but it was too late. The old bull grunted sev-eral times, blowing steam out of his nose and pawing the ground with his hooves.Scared, I took off running towards my grandfather. I chucked the hay fork overthe top of fence, nearly impaling my grandfather in the chest. Somehow, I man-aged to climb over and hide behind him.

Grandfather and I watched the angry bull from the safety of the other side of thefence. As I reached down to pick up the hay fork, I heard something snap. The oldbull had broken the post holding him in place and was now headed full tilt in ourdirection. That old bull ran head long right into the three rail fence in front of us,snapping off the middle board with his horns. The force of the collision must ofstunned him, for he immediately turned back towards the pasture and lay down.
