Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park promotes the

enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of gardens,

sculpture, the natural environment and the arts.

In Fiscal Year 2012 Meijer Gardens welcomed 596,892 guests to six exhibitions celebrating horticulture and sculpture, 34 concerts, numerous plant shows, countless educational programs, classes, camps and other events. Annual exhibitions like Butterflies Are Blooming, Chrysanthemums and More! and Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World, drew popular appeal from all audiences. Temporary sculpture exhibitions such as Essence: The Horses of Deborah Butterfield, Beverly Pepper: Palingenesis 1962–2012 and Body Double: The Figure in Contemporary Sculpture, offered a wide survey of Modern and Contemporary Art from the early 1960s to today.

Our permanent collection expanded when more than twenty artists from the permanent collection and gallerists with whom we have worked made significant contributions to the Frederik G. H. Meijer Memorial Collection. Drawings, prints and sculpture have been generously donated by many who came to know Fred and Meijer Gardens.

Summer brought expansions to both popular concert series. The Outdoor Summer Concert Series, featuring nationally recognized musical acts, expanded to 25 concerts—the mostwe’ve ever hosted. Familiar favorites like Lyle Lovett, k.d.lang and Bonnie Raitt along with Amphitheater new comers The Head and the Heart, Darius Rucker, Gavin DeGraw and Colbie Caillat and others drew record audiences to the 2012 Outdoor Summer Concert Series.

Our popular Tuesday Evening Music Club featured local performers on nine Tuesdays in July and August.

Fred and Lena’s vision for Meijer Gardens included a Japanese garden and late summer ushered in the very beginning of construction on The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. The project is ahead of schedule and after a successful fundraising campaign, we will be able to move aggressively forward to open the Japanese Garden in 2015.

Fred Meijer’s passion for Meijer Gardens lives on, and is shared by such a largenumber of people who give freely of their time to bring joy to guests through our horticulture and sculpture collections—another testament to Fred’s vision. Meijer Gardens is fortunateto have loyal and dedicated volunteers. Over 800 volunteers gave more than 75,000 hours in fiscal year 2012. As an institution, we benefit from their presence, talent and skills. More importantly, our guests benefit so much from our remarkable volunteers.

Fred and Lena Meijer have made Meijer Gardens possible for millions of guests to experience and enjoy. Though we miss Fred very much, we are committed to growing and maintaining Meijer Gardens for generations to come. In all we do, we strive to preserve Fred’s vision and his legacy.

Gratefully,

David S. Hooker President & Chief Executive Officer

Butterflies Are BloomingOur most popular annual horticultural exhibition featured thousands of tropical butterflies in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory and returning for a second year, a display of Monarch caterpillars. Native to Michigan, Monarch caterpillars were on display in the Seasonal Display Greenhouse and feeding on milkweed plants. More than 169,400 guests visited during March and April, 2012, to enjoy Butterflies Are Blooming.

Chrysanthemums and More!Truly an autumn horticultural feast for the senses, Chrysanthemums and More! featured mums throughout the gardens and grounds, with a spectacular wall of mums display in the Seasonal Display Greenhouse, which creatively incorporated not only mums, but green apples and plantings of cabbage, kale, millet and more! Back for a second year in 2012 was a special Mum Day in October that offered members and guests horticulturedemonstrations, walking tours and interactions with our expert horticulturists. More than 66,000 guests visited during Chrysanthemums and More!

Holiday TraditionsThe Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World exhibition in FY 2012 (calendar year 2011) highlighted celebrations of light from many different cultures across the globe. Many people use light as a way to celebrate their holiday traditions and customs and

we prominently featured those in our promotions, our educational programming and the presentation of our displays. Some of the cultural traditions involving light that were on display were Hanukkah, the eight-day festival of lights; the Hindu celebration of Diwali; the parols of the Phillipines; and of course, the traditional Christmas light displays. In addition, five new structures were added to the much-loved Railway Garden display including the Van Andel Institute, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, Maya Lin’s Ecliptic sculpture at Rosa Parks Circle and Alexander Calder’s sculpture La Grande Vitesse complete with city and government buildings. More than 75,400 guests delighted in the displays of Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World.

Other HighlightsSydney Eddison, author and life-long gardener, gave the Secchia Garden Lecture entitled Change: The Passage of Time in the Garden. The Lena MeijerChildren’s Garden offered kid-friendly plantings that were chosenfor their appeal to the senses. At the West Michigan Home & Garden Show, our expert horticulturists gave presentations for attendees. Plant Shows remained a popular destination for horticulture fansincluding the Orchid Show, the Michigan All-State Bonsai Show and many more.

Deborah ButterfieldThe winter sculpture exhibition, Essence: The Horses of Deborah Butterfield, featured works by one of the most respected and acclaimed artists of her generation whose works Cabin Creek and Small, Dry Fork Horse, are among our permanent collection. Butterfield’s horses have been the focus of great interest as much for their creative use of materials as for their craftsmanship. The horse has been the singular focus of her prolific career since the mid 1970s—most frequently focusing on the mare instead of the stallions and warhorses most commonly encountered in the history of art. This exhibition featured the installation of both large-scale and pedestal-size horses.

Beverly PepperBeverly Pepper has been a major force across the international scene since she first captured widespread critical acclaim in the 1960s. This exhibition focused exclusively on her pioneering efforts in metal beginning with her debut at the famed Spoleto exhibition in 1962 through major recent efforts. This was the first major presentation on Pepper in recent years and the first to explore the power and vision of her work in steel. From daring, welded steel of the early 1960s, to pristine geometric works of the late 1960s and 1970s, to the upright sentinels known in public and private collections around the world, the exhibition carried through to ascending monoliths of recent years. This exhibition was accompanied by archival information and a fully illustrated catalogue.

ArtPrize/Body DoubleBody Double: The Figure in Contemporary Sculpture was ArtPrize at MeijerGardens and served as the fall sculpture exhibition. This exhibition was a survey of contemporary sculpture around the subject of the human figure as both an object and a metaphor. Considering a wide variety of formal and conceptual approaches by artists from across the United States and around the world, the exhibition illustrated the diversity and depth of the figure in Contemporary Art from more literal terms to those which are implied or symbolically stated. Building on the strength and variety of the figurative tradition of Meijer Garden’s acclaimed permanent collection, this exhibition explored a renewal of interest in the subject while surveying a broad spectrum of concepts, forms and materials.

Permanent Collection AdditionsAcquisitions to the collection included gifts in honor of Fred Meijer, in the form of numerous prints and drawings from Magdalena Abakanowicz, Hanneke Beaumont, Dale Chihuly, Josh Garber, Antony Gormley, Phillip Grausman, Sean Henry, Dietrich Klinge, Estate of Alexander Liberman, Dennis Lee Mitchell, David Nash, Michele Oka Doner, Arnaldo Pomodoro and the George Segal Foundation. A major George Segal sculpture, Girl Standing in Nature, from the George Segal Foundation was gifted as well, and can now be viewed in the Gallery section of the Sculpture Park. Marlborough Gallery, Galerie Scheffel, Pace Gallery, Crosby Coughlin Fine Art, Zolla-Liberman Gallery also made donations to the collection.

Classes, Camps and Special EventsA wide array of classes for adults and children of all ages generated repeat participants. Animal Photography for Kids, Animated Clay Sculptures and Butterfly Biscuits were among successful new classes for kids, and Winter Photography Workshop, Growing Edible Mushrooms and “Square Foot” Gardening attracted new adult audiences. Similarly, a new approach to summer camps was piloted with Plant Pals: Grandma and Me, which was overwhelmingly popular. Other camp favorites included Photos A to Z, Silly Sculpture, Little Diggers and Outdoor Adventure. Three new bus trips were presented: Tulip Time—A Dutch Adventure, Explore the Ann Arbor Art Fair and A Trip to Traverse City and Old Mission.

Arts and Sculpture ProgramsPublic programming for sculpture exhibitions encompassed a wide variety of presentations, including art history lectures, gallery walks by experts, artists’ demonstrations and staff “perspective” discussions. For the Essence: The Horses of Deborah Butterfield exhibition, highlights included a lecture on the horse theme in art history and a presentation on therapeutic riding. For the Beverly Pepper exhibition, highlights included a demonstration on cut-ting and grinding steel and Sculpture Park walks on women in our collection. The Art and Sculpture Lecture by Sean Henry, creator of Lying Man, drew attention to his realistic figurative style, while the Great Authors Lecturer, Ian Frazier, a well-known writer on nature and human experience, related his observations and travel adventures with excerpts and humor.

Garden and Plant PresentationsPlant shows were presented throughout the year, from the smaller Rose, Iris and Daylily Shows to the more all-encompassing Herb and Gourd Fest, Orchid and All-State Bonsai Show. Every plant

show included ways to engage guests from discovery cart activities to voting for the best-scented rose to going on an orchid “treasure hunt.” Local plant club members were always available to answer questions. The Secchia Garden Lecturer was Sydney Edison, who spoke on the passage of time in the garden and how to garden wiser as you grow older.

School ProgramsSchool tours and programs continued to attract an enormous school audience, from preschool through high school. More than $135,000 in revenue was brought in through these programs. Nativity tours were expanded for the Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World exhibition, and a rangoli “add on” classroom activity was added to help explain the Indian Diwali tradition. Curriculum-related programs continued to support State of Michigan benchmarks and attract students in every grade. Favorites included Simple Machines, Fitness Fun in the Sculpture Park, Then and Now: Life on the Farm, and Writing on a Horse: Poetry and Deborah Butterfield

Family ProgramsFamilies had many options for interaction, education and fun. Animal Adventures: Surviving in the Wild, a collaboration with John Ball Zoo, focused on four animals, with engaging activities for each one. Cozy Tales for Winter Days presented themed story-time presentations and related explorations and Trail Ride Adventure was a unique interactive performance developed to complement the Deborah Butterfield exhibition. Activities at Michigan’s Farm Garden included weekly quilting, and family weekends based on baby goats, honeybees, a county fair and heirloom tomatoes. In the Children’s Garden Fred and the Purple Cow, an interactive play about Fred Meijer as a little boy, was introduced. Let’s Move on the Kids’ Tram, a tour for families with kids combined fitness activities with looking at sculpture.
