Forthcoming Charter Celebrations

As I write this the Art Exhibition has just come to a close. Once again it has been a great success with a record number of 82 pictures sold. The team work of the club was much in evidence during the week with good camaraderie. Those who attended the BBQ enjoyed the informal

atmosphere and it was particularly pleasing to see families including teenagers joining in the fun. All in all we will have donated £3000+ to Hoylake Cottage Hospital and made a significant contribution to the Club Trust account. Thank you to Alan and his committee for all their efforts and to Sue and all her staff at Carr Farm Garden Centre for their assistance during the week. The feedback from the general public about the exhibition was very positive.

Since the July Bulletin we have had an interesting number of meetings.

Ron Warne gave an excellent ComVoc presentation. His interactive approach went down well at the meeting. From this he was able to determine the preferred direction the Club would like ComVoc to take.

Eileen Theil gave an interesting and humorous job talk outlining her career in dentistry over many years – a life time of achievement. We look forward to hearing about her forthcoming trip to India for Polio Plus.

Lynne Hamilton, a good friend of North Wirral, gave a presentation on the conversion of Meadowcroft in Bromborough into a respite and day care centre. Photos of before and after were showed. Thankfully the data projector worked this time!

Jade Barrett and Louise Beach, fund raising managers for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, gave a presentation on the items their £2m of fund raising provided for which the NHS does not cover. This included: the provision of the most up to date equipment; support for vital research; the treatment of patients with world class equipment and the provision of extra support services that would otherwise be unavailable. Jade, a 'friend' of our Club, offered to provide guidance on our fund raising efforts which we will be pleased to accept.

All in all the last four weeks have been rather hectic but worthwhile. They have certainly shown that North Wirral Rotary Club is firing on all cylinders.

DG Philip Horwood has found the start of his year filled with engagements.

District events included the Ins-Outs Lunch (change of Officers at District and of Club Presidents), District Council, the Official Visit of RIBI President Nan McCreadie and the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod.

Philip also attended 3 Charter Dinners and has done 5 of his Official Club Visits, as well as going to some fun and social events.

He finds the District in good spirits but is clearly wondering where the RIBI organisational changes will now go given that the latest proposals were rejected at Rotary International’s COL (Council of Legislation).

Philip makes a point of welcoming new Members to the District during July, including Jill Prasad at North Wirral. He welcome two new Interact Clubs too - and I hope he’ll be pleased to see the reports on achievements at two of our Interact Clubs when he sees this issue!

In conclusion he notes, when writing on 31 July, a quotation by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon "On this International Day of Friendship, let us cultivate warm ties that strengthen our common humanity”

Guest Night - 9th SeptemberThere can be few who do not remember the Warrington Town Centre bombing of March 1993.

Pam White will be addressing us on the work of the The Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace founded in memory of the two boys killed.

The Foundation works with people affected by political violence and acts of terror to SUPPORT them in dealing with their past experiences and using them as the motivation for creating positive change. It works with people of all backgrounds to PREVENT violent conflict by helping them to develop the skills and understanding to be able to resolve conflict through non-violent means and ways. It provides TRAINING and GUIDANCE to leaders and managers, including those at Government level, on how to deal with past, present and future conflicts.

Julie Andrews - the revised version

Enjoy, we perceive that most of our readers know who she is!

Julie Andrews Turning 79 - this is hysterical!

To commemorate her birthday , actress/vocalist, Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons). One of the musical numbers she performed was 'My Favourite Things' from the legendary movie 'Sound Of Music'. Here are the lyrics she used:

(Sing It!) - If you sing it, its especially hysterical!!!

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings, Bundles of magazines tied up in string, These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts, deaf aids and glasses, Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses, Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings, These are a few of my favourite things.

The Club’s Tenth

At the time of writing, Saturday evening, there is still one day to go before the completion of our 2013 Rotary Art Exhibition. A more detailed report will appear in the next issue of the Bulletin.

To date 72 paintings have been sold, beating last year's total by one. This amounts to the sale of nearly £5000 of paintings so far. We are hoping for more sales on our final day.

The wonderful support of Club generally has been essential to the success of this event, and seems to provide pleasure and satisfaction to all those involved.

Our Celebration BBQ on Wednesday evening was a great success, with excellent food, wine and a general healthy ”buzz” from those appreciating probably the highest standard of art yet.

Good Causes

Prenton Public Library

Our Com/Voc Committee has helped Prenton Public Library by providing tables, chairs and storage boxes to improve the equipment for their literacy sessions with young children.

The colour of the furniture was chosen by the children assisted by Joan Evans, manager and Julius Kililiku.

They are all delighted with their new furniture and very clearly expressed their gratitude to the Club.

The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity

The Club welcomed Jade Barrett and Louise Beach to the 5 August meeting - and they very much impressed us with the range of facilities for patients and visiting families now available as well as the world class research being conducted. A number of times they made reference to going above and beyond what could be provided on “normal” NHS arrangements - with examples like advanced dosing machines for chemotherapy, new techniques for treating a number of cancers, in-home treatment for some patients and really nice facilities for family members to stay in if living a long way from the hospital.

The Club made a donation to funds and Jade sent the following appreciation:

We would like to extend our thanks to the Club for their warm welcome this week and your continued support in making a difference to local cancer patients.

The donation made by the club on Monday was most unexpected and could fund a gold seed marker for a prostate cancer patient.

Working through

Hilbre Interact Club wins RI Presidential CitationHilbre High School Humanities College's Interact Club has been awarded a Rotary International Presidential Citation for its dedication and commitment working on community and fundraising projects.

The 2012-13 Citation was awarded by Sakuji Tanaka, RI President, to Interact Clubs across the regions which participated in service projects and activities focused on peace. Hilbre's Interact Club's community project, Reading in the Community, at the drop-in Café at St

Michaels and All Angels Church, Newton; fundraising for Claire House and their involvement with Fairtrade were recognised at the presentation of the award. Mr Mike Reddy, North Wirral Rotary President, and Barbara Sinclair presented the award to representatives of the Club congratulating them on their achievement. Barbara

Pensby Girls’ School - Mock InterviewsOn 5 July, five Club members, together with Mid Wirral Rotarians and Heswall and District Soroptimists attended Pensby Girls’ School for the day, conducting Mock Interviews for Year 10 students.

Some of the students had prepared brilliantly, knew what career choices they intended to pursue in the future and often knew more about the opportunities than the interviewers - even so, it is hoped that they

In July, five boys from Pensby Interact Club put up bird boxes at three Care Homes, assisted by their teacher, Mr Devereaux.

It was a long slog over the last 6 months to complete the bird boxes but it was a very positive result - and the boys are already planning for next year.

We look forward to reporting in due course! Ian

benefitted from some of the guidance offered. Perhaps more fulfilling for the interviewers were the students who were struggling a bit with the whole idea of preparing for the world of work. Some were persuaded to “come out of their shells” in ways the School were very surprised by - and many received useful pointers on how to sharpen up CVs and make more of an impact with application letters/e-mails. I was struck when listening to Eileen’s “Job Talk” that there are other members about whom I know rather less - perhaps because I missed a job talk, or it was done years ago - and also that as many “working” lives recede into a memory there may be other facets/interests worth celebrating and sharing. We used to have some “Focus Interviews” which filled the gaps on willing members. Any interest in having an occasional “Focus Page” on a member? Anybody willing to experiment?
