    Dear parishioners,

    In Christ,

This past weekend the St. FrancisCenter for Priestly Formation hostedan Explorer Day, which is anopportunity for young men consider-ing the priesthood or feeling an ink-ling from the Lord to learn about the

formation process and hear different priests share theirstories of Gods call as well.

I care a lot about vocations and want to encourage ourparish to pray for our seminarians. In the vestibule of thechurch you will see we have a list of all the seminarians

here in the Diocese of San Diego and a prayer card foryou to take and pray for them.

Please stop by and make it part of your family dinner topray for one of these men. I put the list in the bulletin( see page 7 for the list) as well so you can take out thepage and post it to your fridge if you like!

    HEED THE WEEDS

. Celebrating the Eucharist as aremembrance of Christ means

practicing Gods justice towardsneighbors, strangers, and enemies

    alike.Patrick T. McCormick

Anyone who has kept a garden knowsthat with weeds timing is everything. If the weeds are left to grow for toolong, they cannot be pulled withoutdamaging or uprooting the valuable

crop. They must grow together or dietogether. When Jesus compares the world to a field andthe righteous to good seeds, the weeds become the ac-

tions that lead away from Christ. If we arent careful, wemay find that the weeds have overgrown us and cannotbe cleared without doing much damage to our hearts.

What weeds can you clear from your life?

The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus. When yousee a priest, think of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Real Questions by Real Parishioners:

What does it mean when we say in theApostles Creed He descended into

    hell?

The difficulty in understanding what it means whenwe profess that Jesus descended into hell revolvesaround the English word hell, which we almost al-ways associate with the place of eternal damnation. So how could Jesus go to the place of eternal damna-tion and then go to heaven; because both of these aresupposed to be permanent? You go one way or theother, right?

For further reading I recommend the Catechism of

the Catholic Church paragraphs 631- 637.

In short, what we mean is that Jesus went to therealm of the dead. All people who experience death(the separation of the soul from the body) go to therealm of the dead. Jesus descends to this place pro-claiming the Good News to the souls there, so thatthey might not be deprived of the vision of God. Thisis referred to as sheol in Hebrew or hades inGreek.

In this place sheol both the just and unjust re-mained. In the Old Testament we see a clear distinc-tion made between where the good reside insheol (realm of the dead) and where the bad reside.Think of the parable of Lazarus and the poor manand how there was an impassable chasm (or abyss)between the two. The section for the unjust wasnamed gehenna where the souls would suffer eter-nal torment by fire.

Once Jesus Christ proclaimed the Good News we canuse the word hell to refer specifically to what beforeChrist was called gehenna and heaven is wellheaven.

John 5:25 teaches that the dead will hear the voiceof the Son of God, and those who hear will live. Itwouldnt be fair if those who lived before Jesus didn'thave a chance to hear the Good News and be savedso even they have a chance to hear and be saved.

Now the after life is different as we live in the Messi-anic Age or post-Resurrection. Hell we use to refer

ASK THE PASTOR specifically to that place where eternal damnationis; heaven is eternal bliss in the vision of God. Souwho are not completely purified must go throughpurgation for nothing unclean will ever enterheaven (Revelation 21:27). We refer to this aspurgatory.

Oh yea, you say to yourself, what about Purga-tory, what is that? I thought we dont believe thatanymore? Stay tuned next week.
