Dear Parishioners,
We begin this month of October by honoring the memory of a great saint: Therese of Lisieux, more known as the Little Flower or Therese of the Child Jesus, whose feast day falls on October 1st. You probably have seen her image located in the back of the church. As we celebrate God’s great gift of life, during this Respect Life month, let me present to you a remarkable event in the life of Saint Therese’s parents when they decided to honor life in the midst of uncertainty but confident in God’s love.
Mr. Louis Martin and Azelie Guerin already had eight children before Therese was born. Their first daughter was Marie-Louise who later became Sister Marie of the Sacred Heart in the Carmelite monastery of Lisieux. The second child was Marie-Pauline who also joined the Carmelites and who was the superior of the monastery at the time that Saint Therese entered into the convent. The third child was Marie-Leonie who also decided to become a nun at the Visitation of Caen. The fourth child was Marie-Helene, who unfortunately died six years later. When Azelie was pregnant with their fifth child, Joseph, all were very happy to receive the first boy in the family. The parents hoped he could be a priest someday, however the child died when he was only four months old. The sixth child was also a boy, Jean-Baptiste, who died when he was eight months old. After three consecutive deaths, Louis and Azelie prayed to have another child and they were radiant when Marie-Celine was born who interestingly enough also joined the Carmelites and become a nun with her other sisters. A year later Azelie was pregnant again with their eighth child, Melanie Therese, she only lived for two months.
After the lost of four children, Louis and Azelie were considering having another child and were hoping to have another boy. Friends of Azelie advised her not to risk her life since she was already poor of health and was 41 years old. But Louis and Azelie trusted in God’s Providence. There is a letter from Azelie to one of her friends where she wrote that they knew God would not abandon them and if He had given them strength to cope with the loss of their children and the love to raise their four daughters, they happily were open to receive another child. So they decided to have their ninth child who later became our Saint Therese; born on January 2nd 1873 and whose baptismal name was Marie-Francoise Therese.
May Saint Therese’s protection guide men and women of all ages to Respect Life at all times from the moment of conception to natural death.
In Jesus and Mary,
Queridos Feligreses,
From the Pastor
