By Pete RiosChairman, Pinal County Board of Supervisors My office has been receiving calls regarding new fence being installed parallel to Copper Creek Road from River Road west to the San Pedro River. After researching this issue, I found out that Resolution Copper tasked the Nature Conservancy to manage their property in this area. The Nature Conservancy is currently installing a fence on both sides of Copper

Creek Road for liability purposes. I understand that Resolution Copper has no plans to interfere or deny access to Copper Creek Road. The reason the fence is being installed is to restrict access to the property that Resolution Copper owns in that location. There have been reports of people entering that area for unauthorized mesquite cutting. They are simply trying to limit any liability problems that might arise if people are on their property.

By Mila Lira At press time Copper was being sold at $3.46 a pound. A public comment period for this permit will begin on November 30, 2011 and end on January 3, 2012. In addition a public hearing for the draft permit will occur on January 3, 2012 at The Town of Hayden’s Senior Center, 520 Velasco Avenue, Hayden, AZ 85135. For more information please contact Arizona Department of Environmental Quality at (800) 234-5677.Millrock Resources Millrock Resources Inc. announced that drilling has re-commenced at the Galiuro project in Arizona. Vale Exploration Canada Inc. (“VEC”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vale S.A. (“Vale”), is funding the work as part of an earn-in agreement signed in 2009. This phase of the drilling program will focus on the Fourmile target. A circular magnetic feature ringed by a strong conductive zone as identified by a ZTEM airborne geophysical survey is targeted. Intense argillic alteration is known from rock exposures and prior drilling on the west side of the structure. Millrock has pre-collared the hole to a depth of 453 m using a reverse circulation drill. At 427 m leach cap rocks with abundant hematite in Laramide - age andesite and quartz porphyritic intrusive rocks were identified in drill cuttings.

Mining ReportThe leach cap indicates possible proximity to a porphyry copper deposit. Depending on results, the hole may be drilled to 2,000 m depth. A second hole may be drilled contingent upon results and budget. The target at the Galiuro property is a large porphyry copper +/- gold deposit hidden beneath alluvium and Tertiary volcanic cover, similar in magnitude to the nearby Resolution deposit, which is being developed by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. The property is situated at the intersection of the Resolution and San Manuel / Kalamazoo porphyry copper trends. Because of the Tertiary volcanic cover, little exploration work has been previously done by other companies. Through careful geological mapping in combination with airborne magnetic and

ZTEM geophysical surveys, Millrock has identified numerous targets that may represent porphyry deposits. Prior drilling by Millrock and VEC resulted in the discovery of porphyry copper mineralization and alteration in Cretaceous-aged rocks hidden beneath Tertiary volcanic cover rocks. VEC has the option to earn a 60 percent interest in the project through exploration expenditures totaling US$3.5 million and payments of US$850,000. Upon completion of the current drill program, VEC will have expended at least US$3.5 million and will be in a position to exercise its option if it makes the remaining necessary cash payments. VEC may earn an additional 10 percent interest, for a total of 70 percent, by funding a feasibility study.

Redhawk – San Manuel Redhawk Resources, Inc. announced the results for four additional drill holes of the 2011 resource expansion and definition program and one hole from a new area of porphyry mineralization. 2011 Resource

Expansion and Upgrade Drill Program The 2011 drill program is focused on increasing the connection between the Keel and American Eagle (AE) porphyry areas and infill drilling to move a considerable portion of the AE

resource and more of the Keel resource into the Measured and Indicated categories in preparation for a Pre-Feasibility Study commencing early in 2012. Results from earlier drilling in the 2011 program were

By Sedona Sunrise Just four and half years ago five women got together at the “Sonoran Bed & Breakfast” in Oracle to celebrate a birthday. These five women were all business owners and friends. They had so much fun during the celebration they decided they would get together once a month and support each other in the growth of their businesses as well as the growth of their community. This was the birth of the Oracle Women’s Network (O.W.N.). Today O.W.N. has grown into an organization of 25 women whose mission is “To provide women entrepreneurs in Oracle an opportunity for education, networking, and business services”. Growing and developing the community is their goal. The group gets together once a month usually on the first Friday at 8 a.m. Most months they meet at the C.O.D. Ranch out on Mount Lemmon Road for an incredibility delicious breakfast put on by C.O.D.’s master chef David Raneri. When not meeting at the C.O.D., they meet at the facilities of their various members. At each meeting members and guests have a minute to introduce themselves, tell a little about their business, explain their ideal client and share their “tag” line with the group. Each month two members have five minutes to go into greater depth

On Dec. 9, two very lucky children were awarded a full year music scholarship from the O.W.N. (Oracle Women’s Network) for the year 2012. The awards were presented by Mary Gibson, outgoing President of O.W.N., and Elaine Helzer. Shown left to right in front row is Elaine Helzer next to Rickey Tucka first place award winner and Aiko Robles second place winner. What is O.W.N. (Oracle Women’s Network)?regarding their business. These presentations help each member to focus on how to best present their businesses as well as allow members to become familiar with the other businesses represented. In

this way, the members are able to refer their friends and family to each other. After the introductions, the meeting consists of presentations by outside speakers and/or members. The presentations are on

topics such as marketing techniques, communication skills, using technology to grow their businesses. Periodically, they do not have a speaker and will have group discussions on their goals, tag lines,

their 30 second “elevator” speech and other relevant topics. O.W.N. is open to women business owners in Oracle and the surrounding communities and is currently recruiting new members. In addition to business owners, O.W.N. encourages retired business owners and board members of non-profit organizations such as Friends of Oracle State Park, the Business Success Center and the Oracle Community Center to join. O.W.N. also supports several of these

organizations with their financial contributions and encourages their membership to support them as well. It is important to the group that they support the community in addition to their own individual businesses as an important part of their mission is to create a more viable community in Oracle. One of their concerns is that so many people in Oracle work in Tucson or go there to spend their money. Tucson is in Pima

By John Hernandez The Kids’ Closet celebrated the beginning of construction for its new building in Mammoth with a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Joe McGowan started the program talking about the history of Kids’ Closet and how it started in Mammoth 15 years ago and they were happy to be returning to Mammoth. He also thanked the Mammoth-San Manuel School District and the community for their support. The Kids’ Closet is the core program of the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach, providing clothing for children in need. Thousands of children from Head Start through eighth grade have benefited from this program. SaddleBrooke Community Outreach also provides tutoring, scholarships, teen closet and summer enrichment programs. Maggie DeBlock, President of SaddleBrooke Community Outreach acknowledged the Golden Goose which provides over 50 percent of the support for the Kids’ Closet. The remaining funding comes from Outreach fundraisers such as the Walkathon in the fall, Holiday Home Tours in December, grants, donations, Clothe a Child, golf ball sales, recycling, tribute card sales and membership dues. She also recognized members of the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Board, the Kids’ Closet Leadership Team, volunteers and Co-Directors, Pat Ford and Paula Morgan. “We couldn’t do this important work for the kids without your generosity, hard work and commitment to the kids that we serve,” Maggie said. “You are amazing!” Joe McGowan then recognized and thanked the following people:• Town of Mammoth, Mayor Craig Williams, members of the Town

Council, members of Planning and Zoning Commission and Town Clerk Rachelle Sanchez for their generosity ($1 annual lease) and support. • Theresa Throop of Oracle Land and Homes for finding the site, setting up meetings with Mayor Williams and for her support.• The Golden Goose Board, Staff, and volunteers – “We couldn’t do this without each of you.”• Buck and Kasey Thomas, TB Contractors “who have been supportive of our efforts to provide a new home for the Kids’ Closet” and provided the drinks for the day’s celebration.• Mammoth-San Manuel School District especially John Ryan, Superintendent and David Hogan, Maintenance/Transportation Supervisor “for their unfailing support above and beyond the call of duty to keep the closet up and running after the vandalism, floods, and lightning occurrences”; “without your support the Closet would not have been the success that it is today.” Barbara McClure from Catalina Community Services, Cynthia Chevalley of the Tri-Community Food Bank, Ed Drager from the SaddleBrooke Rotary Club and Tim Johnston were acknowledged and thanked for being in attendance. Pinal County Attorney Jim Walsh was in attendance. He spoke about the wonderful work that the people from SaddleBrooke Outreach do for our communities and thanked them. He said that SaddleBrooke should be an honorary member of the Tri-Community. Walsh and Shannon Ortiz, Community Liaison for the Pinal County Attorney’s Office gave out Anti-Drug posters and bookmarks to all the kids from Mammoth Stem School in attendance. A group of children from Mammoth Stem School then went to work breaking

Mason Stewart, Francisco Botello, Leticia Ahumada, Analicia Ahumada, Pacey Smith-Garcia, Olivia Ortega and Angel Cano.

The contractor for the construction work is TB Contractors from Catalina. Buck and Casey Thomas are the principals of the

Golfers of all abilities are invited to a benefit golf outing at the championship SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club on Saturday, January 14, 2012. The four-person scramble competition includes 18 holes on the lush desert terrain, a cart, lunch at “The Shack on the Lake at #9” and dozens of give-aways and prizes. Sponsored by Friends of Oracle State Park (FOSP), all proceeds will be dedicated to funding a limited re-opening of Oracle State Park. In February, March, and April 2012, the park will be opened for the general

public every Saturday, and opened on selected weekdays so the popular school environmental education programs can be resumed. Over the last two decades, thousands of students from area and regional schools learned key environmental principles on the trails and natural washes of the park’s oak-manzanita woodlands. Prizes for golfers include a free golf cart to be awarded for a hole-in-one on a yet-undesignated hole. There will be prizes for the longest putt, longest drive, shortest

drive, in-the-circle par threes, most lost balls, most unusual play of the day, and many more. Golfers can sign up as a foursome for $200, or individually for $50. Full information is available from Neil Krupicka at 520-818-7883 or [email protected]. Oracle State Park was closed in October 2009 due to severe state budget cuts. Since then, FOSP has partnered with Arizona State Parks to help preserve the historic Kannally Ranch House and grounds, maintain its 15 miles of hiking

trails including those linked to the Arizona Trail, coordinate removal of dead treees. More importantly, FOSP has worked to reach an agreement with State Parks to help fund limited park operations for three months this spring and three months in the fall. The golf outing will help FOSP reach its fund-raising goal of $21,000. A membership drive and donations outreach will continue. Casa Grande, AZ – Sun Life Family Health Center is among 500 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) to be included in a National Medicare Advanced Primary Care Practice Demonstration Project. This is the first ever Medicare demonstration specifically for health centers and provides an exciting opportunity for the transformation to a medical

home over the next three years. The demonstration will be conducted from Nov. 1, 2011 through Oct. 31, 2014. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced four of Sun Life’s offices throughout the county, Casa Grande, Coolidge, Maricopa and San Manuel, have been selected to participate in this National Demonstration Project.

This will allow Sun Life to continue to improve the coordination and quality of care the organization provides to patients. The project had over 800 applicants and although they only had the funding for 500 Health Care Centers, Sun Life is pleased that four of the organization’s facilities will take part in the new program and is hopeful that CMS will

Sun Life selected to be part of national demonstration projectexpand the program in the future. “The goal of the demonstration project is to help patients get the care they need in a primary care setting verses an emergency care setting. When patients use a health care center as their primary source of care, it allows doctors, nurses, and specialists to coordinate their care,” states CMS Administrator, Dr. Donald M. Berwick. “Health centers are an important part of the health care community and improve the health of the nation to assure access to quality primary health care services. They also serve as an integral source of local employment and economic growth in

many underserved and low-income communities.” “Sun Life is a high quality organization and through this project, we are continuing to demonstrate our commitment to quality patient care, quality management and being a total quality care partner in Pinal County,” says Travis J. Robinette, Sun Life’s CEO. To learn more about Sun Life, visit www.sunlifefamilyhealth.org.Sun Life Family Health Center is Pinal County’s largest primary care provider, with offices in Casa Grande, Eloy, Coolidge, Maricopa, Oracle and San Manuel. The office on Arizola Road in Casa Grande houses management operations,

as well as Family Practice, Family Dentistry and Orthodontics, and provides in-house Radiology, Pharmacy and Laboratory. The Center for Women and Children on Florence Boulevard in Casa Grande offers Women’s Wellness and Maternity Care as well as Pediatric Care. The San Manuel Family office also offers in-house Pharmacy and Pharmacy services. Behavioral Health services are available at the San Manual office. Sun Life is one of two community health centers in the state receiving accreditation from the Joint Commission, the gold standard of quality in health care.

By Ashton GrahamPINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – Just when you thought renting items became a thing of the past, a new innovation has swept across Central Arizona College’s bookstores that are operated by Barnes & Noble. Students now can rent

their textbooks, saving more than 50 percent of what it would cost to purchase a brand new copy. The conveniences are unending - students can rent in-store or online, and the textbooks are available for pick-up or delivery. The bookstores also accept

financial aid. Students are permitted to keep the textbooks for the entire semester, while both highlighting and note taking are perfectly acceptable. At the end of the term, students will be gently reminded of return deadlines through Barnes & Noble’s customer communication outreach plan. Barnes & Noble launched the new textbook rental program in the fall of 2011, resulting in more than 1,000 textbooks rented at a student savings of more than $50,000. The company anticipates the savings to grow in future semesters and invites students to check out the exciting new program. Medi-Z-Wraps display at Walgreens invites all to explore their creative side when it comes to medicine bottles. (John Hernandez photo)

By John Hernandez Are you tired of looking at all your prescription bottles or having to put on your glasses to read the label on the bottle to make sure you are taking the right medication at the right time? There may be a solution to these dilemmas. Two local ladies have come up with a product concept to brighten up and even personalize those dull medication bottles. The MEDI-Z-WRAP is the idea of Bunkii Trowbridge of Catalina. Bunkii and her business partner Gail Hildreth of SaddleBrooke have designed and produced images that you use to wrap around your prescription bottles. Give your medicine an image of its own. Bunkii came up with the concept after getting tired of the label on her medication telling her what to do everyday. She has a background in graphic arts and came up with popular images that make the prescription bottle fun. “Privacy and fun all in one,” said Bunkii. Just wrap and stick. The wrap contains an adhesive which holds it in place and can easily be removed and used again. Just lift to view prescription and slide it back into the wrap. The Medi-Z-Wrap is reusable, switchable, washable and universal. It appeals to all age groups.

Jazz up your medicine bottles with Medi-Z-Wraps

Bunkii Trowbridge of Catalina and Gail Hildreth of SaddleBrooke are pleased to present Medi-Z-Wraps. (John Hernandez photo)

They currently have 20 images available with pictures of cactus, flowers, puppies, dolphins, motorcycle, golf balls, ice cream cones, pink ribbon “Find a Cure,” and more. You will be able to customize and personalize the wrap. You can use personal photos or art work that can be turned into a Medi-Z-Wrap. Numbers and words can be placed on colored backgrounds. Different images can be used to remind you when to take your medication such as a picture of the sun or a sunrise for morning pills and an image of the moon or a sunset for evening medication. The wraps will even fit spice bottles.

Recycle the prescription bottle and use it to hold paints, coins, beads or buttons wrapped in one of your favorite images. Ideas for personalizing your prescription bottles are only limited by your imagination. The Medi-Z-Wraps are currently available at Walgreens test stores in Oro Valley, 12th and Ajo in Tucson, Sahuarita, Green Valley and Nogales. “Walgreens has been so good to me,” said Binkii. Look for their display located by the pharmacy in a Walgreens near you. The Medi-Z-Wraps make great gifts for the holidays. To find out more about Medi-Z-Wraps visit their website at www.medi-z-wraps.com.

County and when people spend their money there, the tax revenue leaves Pinal County. One goal of the O.W.N. group is to promote services and businesses that will help keep the tax revenue in Pinal County. O.W.N. most recently sponsored a music scholarship for a deserving child in the local area. The scholarship provided piano lessons for a year with Oracle’s local piano teacher, Elaine Helzer. After reviewing all the applications, it was

narrowed down to two finalists. Each finalist showed a great deal of promise and both were very deserving. Finally, the Team Leaders of O.W.N. made their choice. When the child’s name was announced at the December meeting, everyone was happy for the recipient, but disappointed for the other finalist. Almost immediately an O.W.N. member, who wishes to remain anonymous, volunteered to sponsor the other finalist. This is just an example of how O.W.N. and its individual members support the community.

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity basketball team ran the floor against Immaculate Heart on Nov. 29 with the Miners coming out on top in a low scoring 30 – 14 victory. Leading the Miners was John Sanchez with 10 points, five steals and five rebounds, Andres Sierra with five points and four steals, Kyle Bowman had three assists, Richard Ochoa had two assists, and Marcos Sierra had four blocks. Coach Sichting said, “We played very well defensively against Immaculate Heart. It’s very impressive to hold any team to 14 points. The second half we just couldn’t get shots to fall. It was a big win for the team improving our record to 2-0.” On Nov. 30, the Miners hosted the Dorados from Canyon Del Oro taking a tough loss to a much bigger school. Leading the Miners was Sanchez with seven points and five blocks; Nathan Johnston with five points; Bowman with five points; Daniel Perez had four assists; Richard Ochoa had five rebounds; Clark Montano had four

rebounds; Andres Sierra had two steals and four blocks. Coach said, “CDO is a really talented team. They have good guards and post. It’s hard to defend a team that has both good guards and post. Turnovers and giving up second chance points hurt us. I was hoping that the game would have been more competitive. I think next time we play them it will be a more competitive game.” San Manuel hosted another tough basketball school in the Pusch Ridge Christian Academy Lions on Dec. 6, this time the Miners would hang in there playing the Lions close but fell in the end 60 – 46. Leading the Miners was Andres Sierra with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals. Perez had 10 points with seven rebounds. Sanchez had 10 points with eight rebounds, two assists and one block. Johnston had six points and four rebounds. Marcos Sierra had four points, seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Clark Montano had two points, one rebound, two assists and one steal. Coach said, “I was proud of how hard the guys

Marcos Sierra goes up for two against the Lions. (Frank Smith photo)

played. We just committed to many turnovers. We also missed too many lay ups and free throws. We won’t win to many games shooting 24 percent from two-point field goals and 44 percent from the free throw line. Our defense is what kept us in the game.” The Miners competed in the Copper Cities Tournament in Globe on Dec. 8-10. Results will be in next week’s issue. San Manuel will travel to Tucson to face off against Green Fields on Friday with the tip off at 7 p.m.

By Frank Smith The San Manuel High School wrestling team got off to a red-hot start, as they defeated all of their opponents in the Santa Cruz multi-meet on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The Miners wrestled the Gophers from Florence first, and it was a see-saw battle as Florence took an early 10-0 lead. San Manuel bounced back to take the lead 15-10. After relinquishing the lead once again with a forfeit at the heavyweight spot, the Miners would not lose again, recording two

forfeits and seven pins on their way to a landslide victory. Against the host team, Santa Cruz, San Manuel won the head-to-head match-ups 5 - 3 and accepted five forfeits to take a lopsided win. The final match of the evening was against the under manned Baboquivari Warriors. Only three matches were wrestled, with the Miners winning two out of three. Team results were San Manuel 63, Florence 16; San Manuel 60, Santa Cruz 21; and San Manuel 78,

given in news releases dated June 1, 2011 and September 12, 2011. The drill program is continuing with three core drills working 24/7 on the property. Assay results are pending on a number of completed holes. Assay results for holes, RAE-07-020 drilled vertical to total depth 3671 feet (1119m), RAE-08-029 drilled vertical to total depth 4108 feet (1252m), RAE-11-054 drilled N45W at -85 to total depth 3751 feet (1143m), and RMK-11-070 drilled vertical to total depth 3637 feet (1109m) have been received and significant intervals are shown below. Holes RAE-11-054, which included a lengthy mineralized

zone of 900 feet of 0.51 percent Cu and RMK-11-070 were step out holes designed to increase the connection of the Keel and AE deposits. Hole RAE-07-020, which intersected a significant mineralized zone of 1927 feet of 0.48 percent Cu, is an infill resource upgrade hole in the AE, and hole RAE-08-029 is a step out hole at the SE margin of the existing AE resource. Redhawk believes the results from the infill and expansion holes reported above and previously will help not only in demonstrating the continuity of mineralization between the Keel and AE but should also increase the total resources of the combined deposits. Redhawk believes the drilling results from the three holes drilled from the REX-10-047

site west of the Keel resource boundary suggest the strong possibility of an area that can be developed into a new resource. It is also possible that the resource may connect with the existing Keel and AE porphyry resource. Additional drilling will be required in the new area and will be considered after the resource expansion and upgrade drilling in the 2011 drill program is completed. R. Joe Sandberg, Redhawk President and CEO, stated “The resource upgrade and expansion drilling between the Keel and AE deposits continues to be very encouraging. The drilling will lead to a new resource update in early 2012. The additional permitting, hydrology, metallurgical and mine optimization efforts are continuing in preparation

for the Pre-Feasibility Study in early 2012. We believe the outcome of these efforts will continue to move the Copper Creek project closer to a production decision. “ R. Joe Sandberg, CPG, Redhawk President, CEO and a Qualified Person under the meaning of NI 43-101, is responsible for the technical content of this news release. All core samples are picked up on site by Redhawk geologists or delivered by the drillers to Redhawk personnel. All samples are delivered by Redhawk personnel to ALS Laboratory Group ISO 9001:2000 & ISO 17025 in Elko, NV or Reno, NV for assay or to Jacobs Assay Office Registered Assayers in Tucson, AZ for sample preparation to pulps and shipped by Jacobs using UPS to ALS in Reno, NV. Check assay standards are

submitted with each assay job, and reviewed for accuracy. Check assaying is being performed by Inspectorate and KD Engineering/Metcon. The Tri-Community Food Bank has a thrift shop stocked with many clothing items and small household items. It is located at 108 Redwood Drive in Mammoth. The hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday and Saturday. All workers are volunteers so all proceeds go back into supporting our local food bank. Remember that it is the Tri-Community Food Bank that provides food to families in our local communities. Food Banks by other names do not proved assistance to families in our tri-community area. The Tri-Community Food Bank’s thrift shop can use more small kitchen appliances and household items. (John Hernandez photos)

By Frank Smith The San Manuel High School Lady Miners hosted the Push Ridge Lady Lions on Dec. 6, coming out on the short end of the scoring column, losing 5-49. The Lady Lions came out blazing against the lady Miners to take a 0-37 half time lead. Coach Jungbluth said, “I was disappointed how the girls responded after Push Ridge took a 19-0 lead after the first quarter. I felt we did not do a good job getting back on defense, rebounding and going after loose balls. We are not a good shooting team. If we are going to be competitive in our games we need to display more energy and effort on the defensive end.” In the second half the girls played much better on the defensive side of the ball. Jungbluth said, “We gave up 26 less points in the second half because the girls played with more intensity. The girls also did a much better job getting back on defense. On the offensive end the girls made two out of 29 shots; we are not going to win any games when we shot seven percent” Leading the ladies was Angelica Zuniga with four

Lady Miners fall to Lady Lions 5-49points and seven rebounds, Leticia Reidhead added one point. The Lady Miners hosted Amphi on Tuesday and

will travel to Tucson on Friday to take on Greenfields with the JV taking the floor at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 5:30 p.m.
