were born there. After moving to Arizona in 1954, they added Ben, Karen, Daniel, Mark, David, Michael and Anna to their family. Herman worked at the San Manuel Magma mine as an electrician until 1970, when the family started preparing to migrate to Australia. In Sept. of 1971, Herman and Fay and the eight children still living at home left for Australia. They

all arrived in Sydney on Oct. 2, 1971. After several weeks, Herman drove across to Perth with his family (2500 miles.) The years in Australia would see several more trips into and around the Outback. Herman and Fay returned to Dudleyville in 1990, and Herman bought their original home place, where he retired. Herman was preceded in death by his father, Erastus, his mother, Jewell, and his sister, Ima. He is survived by his loving wife, Fay, of 61 years,

brother Johnny, brother Steven, all nine children: Toni Wilson (Lanny), Eva Lee (Jef), Ben (Esther), Karen Fenn ell (Eric), Daniel (Kim), Mark, David (Diane), Mike (Kim) and Anna Tyers (Paul); nineteen grand-children, and fourteen great-grandchildren.

It has been a few weeks since A Taste of Oracle; our team has had a chance to recoup, refresh and decompress since hosting this event and the Oracle Women’s Network (OWN) would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our communities who so graciously supported us and A Taste of Oracle. We appreciate all those who participated, helped, attended and supported our efforts to pull off this successful event and are overwhelmed at the positive responses we have received as a direct result. Part of our goal at OWN is growing and developing our community and we believe that a big step has been made towards that effort. We are very pleased and proud that A Taste of Oracle not only accomplished its objective in raising funds for a new Tri-Community Visitors Center and showcasing our local businesses, but in also bringing our communities together in support of each other. In light of this and due to several requests, we are considering having this event once a year. We managed to raise approximately $3,000.00 at A Taste of Oracle, which will go towards paint, furniture, carpet, signage, landscaping and other things needed to prepare the center for opening. Of course, we will continue our fundraising efforts towards this goal, however, our ultimate objective is to become an “offi cial” visitor’s center recognized by the state and receive funding. The requirement for this is for the center to be open 40 hours per week. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Sue Parra, owner of Sue & Jerry’s Trading Post and president of OWN at 520-896-9200./s/ Jacqueline CookDiva Digital Designs andOWN, Information Offi cer

FLORENCE, Ariz. –Pinal County Attorney and Pinal County Substance Abuse Council Chairman James P. Walsh and police chiefs from municipalities around the county detailed their initiative against synthetic drugs. Apache Junction Police Department Chief Jerry Monahan, Coolidge Police Department Chief Joseph Brugman and Kearny Police Department Interim Chief Bob Ingulli, Eloy Police Department Chief

Bill Pitman and United States Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Office Douglas W. Coleman were present during a press conference in the Apache Junction Police Department. “Our aim is to eliminate the availability of synthetic drugs and protect our residents from this very serious problem,” Walsh said. This effort begun with

Initiative to eliminate synthetic drugs announcedpolice departments and non-profits by asking merchants to voluntarily stop the sale of “Novelty Powders” containing dangerous chemicals such as synthetic cannabinoids and cathenones that are harmful. In the event that smoke shops and other businesses continue the sale of these harmful chemicals, the County Attorney’s Office will seek and obtain injunctive relief to permanently stop

businesses from selling these synthetic cannabinoids and cathenones to the public. To accomplish this task, a verified complaint for temporary and permanent injunctive relief needs to be filed in the Superior Court. This complaint will be supported by affidavits from the following community stakeholders including medical professionals, mental health providers, schools, law enforcement

and public safety, users, parents and neighboring

citizens affected by the public nuisance.

TRAILING RIOS IN THE POLLS, BRISTOW ACTS OUT OF DESPERATION

Dear Families of Pinal County, In my 30 years of public service I have never seen such malicious and dirty politics in Pinal County. My opponent has hit a new low with her misleading and vicious hit pieces and robo calls against me. She has even stooped to attacking my family. With all of the important issues facing the families of our communities, my opponent has offered no ideas to address the challenges facing Pinal County but instead has engaged in a dirty campaign of blatant lies, innuendos and outright fiction. The people of Pinal County deserve candidates with honesty and integrity, and a vision for the future. The people of Pinal County deserve better than a campaign of shameful lies and mud slinging. I am very proud of my 30 year record of dedicated public service and the endorsements that have come as a result of that work: Teachers, Nurses, Steelworkers, Doctors, Firefighters, Lawyers. Highway Patrol, AFL-CIO, Communication Workers of America, Ophthalmologists, Realtors, Etc. Shame on you Alicia Bristow for your attempts to disparage a lifetime of service to the community. I remain committed to serving my community; Republicans, Independents and Democrats. The issues facing Pinal County affect us all. Respectfully,Pete Rios, Supervisor District 1

FLORENCE, Ariz. – Pinal County is less than a month away from 2012’s general election. A lot of offi ces are up for grabs this year – from President of the United States to local fi re board members. While a growing number of residents are using vote by mail or early voting, there are those who still enjoy the tradi-tion of going to the polling place and selecting the candi-date of their choice. One way of making this voting experi-ence an easy and pleasant one is to follow all the rules when it comes to polling place ac-tivities. “It seems like most people

know the rules of conduct when it comes to the polling place,” said Elections Direc-tor Steve Kizer. “There have been some changes made by the state legislature that some people may not know when it comes to polling place activi-ties.” To start, Kizer recommended that everyone know where their polling place is located. To fi nd local polling places visit http://goo.gl/7KnNE (shortened URL), or call elections at (520) 866-7550. Polling location information is listed on the sample ballot that is mailed to each household. Voter identifi cation require-

ments are available at http://goo.gl/R0QAj (shortened URL). Those voting by mail must sign the envelope con-taining the ballot. Signatures are required for verifi cation against voter registration documents. Arizona’s legislature modi-fi ed the rules governing poll-ing places to now allow voters to wear clothing with the name of their candidate or issue of choice. They can also bring in printed materials from their candidate or issue they are supporting. Voters are not allowed to distribute these materials to other voters inside

The hilly terrain of Oracle will once again be filled with runners participating in this year’s Oracle Run. On Sat., Oct. 27, 2012, the Oracle Historical Society

Thirty years of Oracle Run this Saturday(OHS) will host the annual event, now in its thirtieth year. The number of participants increases every year. A record 230 runners and walkers registered for last year’s 10K (6.2 miles) Run and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk. The challenging course brings out the best runners in southern Arizona each year. One of the former champions and a world-class runner from Oracle will be returning to the area after being gone for quite awhile. Kelly Cathey was a state champion runner at San Manuel High School. She still holds some state records. She attended the University of Oklahoma on a track scholarship and was

a two-time All American. Cathey was invited to come back to the area as part of the thirtieth annual Oracle Run. She will be starting the race along with Oracle Run Race Director Darrell Klesch. This year’s commemorative shirt will boast an original watercolor painting done by Elizabeth Ott, a beloved Oracle resident who passed away 20 years ago. Ott’s family has generously offered one of her beautiful paintings of Oracle’s Cherry Valley. Her family is also loaning a selection of her watercolors to be displayed inside the Acadia the day of the Run. The 10K race is part of the Southern Arizona Roadrunners Running

Shop Grand Prix. Last year’s overall men’s winner was Craig Curley who broke his own Oracle Run record. Katie Williams of Tucson was the overall women’s champion with a time of 39.50.4. The event at the Acadia Ranch Museum on Mount Lemmon Road begins at 9 a.m. for the 10K followed at 9:05 a.m. for the One Mile Fun Run/Walk. Proceeds benefit the Oracle Historical Society.

San Manuel High School Alumni and friends of Kelley Cathey are invited to come and visit. Expect some extra celebrating as the Oracle Run turns 30, and plan to attend as a runner, walker, cheerleader, volunteer or observer. Registration forms are available at OracleHistoricalSociety.org, AZRoadRunners.org, the OHS office and in select running stores around Tucson. Call OHS

at 896-9609 for more information.

Troop 822 from the Tri-Communities ventured West of Flagstaff, Arizona to Boy Scout Camp Raymond. They were accompanied by their Scoutmaster, Terry Newman and Troop Committee Chair, Jane Newman. Camp Raymond hosted 32 troops totaling approximately 300 scouts during the week of July 16, 2012 thru July 21, 2012. The troops attending Camp Raymond were from Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and California. The Troop arrived at Camp Raymond on Sun. July 16 around 1:00 p.m. after a six-hour trip. The scouts had their camp setup, swim checks completed, aquatics merit badge signups completed and dinner eaten before the sun went down. The boys were up by 5:30 a.m. on Mon. to start their week of camp. During the week, the scouts attended numerous merit badge classes and had fun participating in the Black Bear Swim, Tenderfoot Run and Fortress Hike. They took on the extra challenges of two camp service projects, a flag raising ceremony and two kitchen patrol duties. They attended the Order of the Arrow (OA) call out, a first for one of the scouts at-tending.

On Tues. morning they arose, did kitchen patrol duty and showed up to raise the flags for Camp Raymond. The troop was unable to complete the flag raising because a lock with a combination unknown to the camp commissioner staff had been placed on the storage area for the flags. A little while later the combina-tion was found and the scouts raised the flags for the camp. The head commissioner thanked the scouts and told the Scoutmaster later in the day how impressed he was with how the boys handled the situation with the flags. On Wednesday they com-pleted their first service project and received the OA’s ribbon for having 60 percent plus scouts from the troop at camp; Thurs. was lunch kitch-en patrol duty and a ribbon for 100 percent of the scouts in a complete scout uniform at all assemblies was awarded. Friday they completed their last service project. Daily they cleaned their campsite; hiked to and from merit badge classes and meals and camp activities; and worked on their Flintlock trail awards. Scouts who earned of the Flintlock Trail Award: Alec Newman, Michael Sanchez, Mikey Garcia, Robert Swee-ney, Benjamin Parry, Bryson

Soto, Anthony Soto and Kelby Redden. Camp Raymond closing ceremonies on July 21, 2012 held many surprises for the Troop. The Eagle Patrol (led by Kelby Redden) received the Honor Patrol Award. The Troop received ribbons for the following awards: Camp Raymond Participa-tion, Adventure Award and the Presidential for Camp Inspection Award. The big surprise was the Troop receiv-ing the first place Spirit Award of three, as selected by the commissioner staff and the camp program director for the Troop, which best demon-strated Scout Spirit during the week at Camp Raymond. On Aug. 18the scouts a court of honor was held at which the scouts received all of the honors that they had earned at summer camp as well as other honors that they had earned prior to and following camp.

Students making a difference ...From Pinal Rural Fire Rescue The nights are getting to cooler and summer temperatures are on their way out. This means that folks with wood-burning stoves, pellet stoves and fireplaces are getting ready to fire them up. According to the American Red Cross, nearly 36,000 fires and 250 deaths occur each year from portable heaters, fireplaces, and chimneys. It’s important to make sure your fire burning appliance is ready for the season too. Pinal Rural Fire Rescue subscribers can call 520-465-5300 to schedule a free home inspection. Here are some tips to make a Fire Wise plan for your winter heating1. Trim back limbs from your chimney at least 10 feet. 2. Make sure that you have a chimney cap and that it was not damaged and is cleaned out.3. Have the chimney cleaned by a licensed chimney sweep, or use the appropriate brush tools, and made sure that animal and bird nests were

It’s time to be fireplace wise

removed. 4. Make sure that the draft is working properly. 5. Make sure you have an ember screen in the front of your fireplace and it doesn’t have any holes. 6. Remove anything flammable from the front of the fireplace and installed a 3-foot area in front of the fireplace that is rock. You might want to use fire resistant mats that can be purchased to put over carpeted areas in front of the fireplace. 7. Get your fire

extinguisher serviced or buy one if you don’t have one. 8. Have a small galvanized can with a locking lid to keep old ash and hot coals in when you clean out the fireplace. This is kept outside -- not on the porch, but in an area that is free of grass and weeds.9. By John Hernandez On Sat. Oct. 13, 2012, Pinal Rural Fire Rescue provided training in fire safety and prevention to kids in Mammoth. The kids watched cartoon

DVDs that taught them fire safety and what to do if their house is on fire. The fire fighters taught them how to drop and crawl in a smoked filled room and to exit through a

window. Using the Kid’s Safety House, which has a fog-producing machine that appears to be smoke, they were able to simulate a smoke filled room that the

Kids learn safety at Pinal Rural Fire Rescuekids had to crawl through to safety. The Safety House has a door that heats up to reproduce the effects of heat from a fire on the other side of the door. Kids are taught to feel the door before opening it as flames could be on the other side.

The kids enjoyed crawling through the “smoke” and climbing down the ladder to safety, they kept doing it repeatedly, making a game of it. The Kid’s Safety House is provided by the Fire Chief’s Association of Pinal County and

is available for all fire departments in the county to use to teach fire safety. “The more we can do to teach these kids how to survive a fire, the better,” said Fire Chief Bud Paine. “We encourage families to set up home escape plans and practice them with their kids.”

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity football team hosted the Lions from Pusch Ridge on Friday night in a section game that had major playoff implications with the Miners coming in at 6 – 2 and the Lions at 4 – 4, a win for the Miners could of moved them up in the rankings for a higher seed but instead the 14 – 6 win for the Lions kept Push Ridge in the hunt for a playoff spot. In the first quarter, the Lions took their opening drive in for a touchdown – Pusch Ridge controlled the time of possession in the first quarter taking 7:44 on the drive. The Lions started out at their own 39 yard line, marching the ball down the seven yard line in 12 plays and capping off the drive on the next play with a seven yard touchdown run from running back Conner Riley, the extra point kick by Aaron Penezak was good for a 7 – 0 lead with 3:56 on the clock. The Miners fumbled the ball on their first possession of the game, giving the ball back to the Lions at the Miners 49 yard line.On the next drive for the Lions, the Miners defensive unit gave the ball back to offensive after back to back sacks

By John Hernandez Homecoming, the annual tradition of the high school welcoming back alumni and former residents, was held on Fri., Oct. 5. It was a time to reminisce and catch up with old friends, root for the hometown football team and see how the town of San Manuel has changed. This year’s homecoming was a special time for a num-ber of former and current residents. At the home of Robert and Sharon Newton, San Manuel alumni ranging from the Class of 1957 to the 1980s gathered to catch up on old times and party. They were celebrating homecoming and the Class of 1962 who had reached its 50 year reunion milestone. Those members of the class of ’62 in attendance included Max Parisot, Royce Doss,

Where were you in ’62? Walk down memory lane with usDon Mclennan, Tom Nay, Don Schrock, Dorothy Roy-bal, Marie (Hall) Roybal, Bill Mee and Stan Schrock. Tom Nay was the Homecoming King in 1962. At this year’s football game he was introduced by the game’s announcer and received a homecoming wel-come and applause from the crowd. In honor of those alumni from the San Manuel High School Class of 1962, let’s take a trip down memory lane and see what was going on in San Manuel and the world in 1962. The school year began for the Class of ’62 on Tues. Sept. 5, 1961, the day af-ter Labor Day. Front-page news in the San Manuel Miner that week was the an-nouncement that Mary Ann Quevedo had been selected as the 1961 Mammoth Fiesta Queen. New teachers were announced including Mattie Lee Thompson, the new Eng-lish teacher. Football season had started and the team would go win-less only scoring 76 points and giving up 338 points in 10 games. The Homecoming game would be their most competitive as they lost to Flowing Wells 18-24. Running back Tom Nay was named Homecoming King, Frances Burny was Home-coming Queen and the atten-dants were Karen Coxon and Janie Woodruff.

In other sports that year, the varsity basketball team would have a winning season led by Doug Swanson, Daryl Bing-ham, Waldo Vasquez, Tom Nay and Frank Gaona. Daryl Bingham was voted Most Valuable player by his teammates. He established a new school record for rebounds, grabbing 214 for the year. Coach Manny Ruiz called him “the best all-around basketball player we have produced.” In baseball, Coach Hal Eustice’s team won its sec-ond consecutive conference championship and went to the state tournament losing in the first round to Chan-dler. Only two seniors were on the team although one of their best pitchers, Bud Culp would be graduating. Rotary sponsored its fifth annual track meet drawing 22 high schools and 300 ath-letes. The track team broke numerous school records. Steve Wegner was the 3A State Champion in the 100 yard and 220 yard dashes. There were 81 students in the graduating class of 1962. Steve Wegner was the Vale-dictorian and Bonnie Rodri-guez and Shirley Watts were co-Salutatorians. Vincent “Vin” Coxon, President of the School Board, presented the diplomas to the graduates. In the San Manuel Miner’s first issue of 1962, the Miner Editor was defending Colo-nel Ralph Redburn the State

Civil Defense Director. It seems that he had spoken at a meeting saying that the United States should attack Russia before they became strong enough to attack us. This caused a controversy that would lead to Governor Paul Fannin relieving him of duty. (For those of the younger generations, the Federal Civil Defense Administra-tion was a milder version of Homeland Security. Their job was to establish bomb shelters and evacuation plans for communities in case of a nuclear attack.) Later in 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis would bring the United States and Russia to the brink of war. The top news stories in the Miner included~ The Sabin type III oral vaccine for polio would be distributed in San Manuel, Mammoth and Oracle. Over 6,000 people were immu-nized in one day in the Tri-Community. This vaccine was developed in 1961 and approved in 1962. Drops of the vaccine were placed on sugar cubes and taken orally. It proved to be the most effective vaccine and helped to nearly eradi-cate worldwide the at one time horrific and crippling disease polio. ~ On April 26, an election was held to determine what union would represent the mine, mill and smelter work-ers in contract negotiation with the San Manuel Copper Corporation. The choices of the workers were United Steel Workers of America, AFL CIO or the International Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers or no union at all. The Interna-tional Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers won the election. A few weeks later this union was declared a communist infiltrated organization by the Subversive Activities Control Board. They were no longer allowed to represent the workers. By John Hernandez The Safe Journey House in San Manuel paid tribute to the many volunteers that help keep the center open. The Safe journey House is an advocacy and intervention center for victims of domestic abuse. The trained volunteers serve as advocates while advocate assistants perform other tasks. The volunteers do everything including taking care of kids, answering phones, handing out brochures, making referrals and cleaning the house. Without the volunteers

the advocacy center could not operate. Edie Krull thanked the volunteers for their service to the community and all the work they do for the Safe Journey House. Have you signed up for a Trunk-or-Treat space for Halloween? Thought about what kind of treats to hand out or whether to dress up you and your vehicle for the event? Planning continues for this great alternative to traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating. This new way of trick-or-treating is safer than walking the dark streets of San Manuel with lots of empty houses along the way. Everyone gathers in one place for costume parade, trunk-or-treat, food, a jumping castle, great music and lots of fun. There’s still time to reserve your spot. While you don’t have to decorate your vehicle to park it and hand out treats, there is still time for that too; as well as yourself, lawn

Trunk or treat in the Tri-Communitychair, lawn mower, broom or whatever else you rode in on. Just call 385-2337 ext. 1113 and leave your name and phone number, and the details will be given you by return call. There will be a prize for the best decorated space. There is no charge for participation unless you are a “vendor for profit”; then there will be a $20 fee. This is a great chance for non-profit clubs to make some money. You must be able to supply your own electricity, if necessary. The gates will open at 3:15 pm and you must have your

vehicles parked by 4:30 pm. The event will start when the parade ends, at approximately 5:30 pm, and vehicles cannot

leave the parking lot until 7:30 pm, for the safety of the children. Mammoth-San Manuel Community Schools will be coordinating the Costume Parade uptown. The parade, led by the firetruck, will wind around the upper arcade and end up across McNab

in front of the Community Schools Office, where the category costume prizes will be rewarded. The parade will begin lining up at 4 pm. You must be in the right category and follow the parade to the Community Schools Office in order to be judged. Let’s make this a Halloween that the kids remember for the rest of their lives, or, at least until next year! And, kids – if you still want to go

door-to-door asking for treats, please remember to bring your flashlight and head for houses that have porch lights on. Safety is like chocolate:

you don’t want too little; but there’s no such thing as too much.
