The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels & Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture Doesn’t the church look pretty? You’d have to be a Scrooge not to feel the heightened sense of expectation and wonder that accompanies this season, when the world around us is transformed by lights and colors and music that can only mean one thing: Christmas is on its way. Sure, the retail community works hard to sell us other holidays and make us think of them as “seasons,” like Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and the Fourth of July. But we know better. These weeks between Thanksgiving and the end of the year are, by any oth-er name, a time unto themselves. Advent is a season set apart because these are weeks of promise. Even those who don’t believe that Jesus is com-ing do believe that Christmas is coming; and strained down to its most secu-lar components, Christmas still seems to be the answer to a great many of the world’s problems. Christmas means warmth and togetherness, generosity, remembrance, and surprise. It is an invitation to care about everyone, even those we routinely ignore or forget. Christmas is the season of peace on earth, a time for drain-ing the moat and lowering the drawbridge, for forgiveness and coming home. It’s our annual moral inventory, as well as the chance to become children once more, to dream about the way things used to be—or perhaps could be. Christmas is our annual opportunity to be born again in spirit and in truth, and that is the best testimony to the idea that incarnation works. Simbang Gabi St Francis of Assisi will host a Simbang Gabi Mass (traditional Filipino Christ-mas Novena) on Saturday, December 15th at 7pm. Please join us for an evening of prayer, song and fellowship. All are welcome to join this beautiful celebration. Advent Reconicilaiton Part of the preparation for Christmas is to experience God’s love and mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Just like in years past, I invite you to our Communal Reconciliation Service on Monday, December 17th at 7:30pm. Tax Information (from a parishioner) – something to keep in mind With the change in the tax laws most taxpayers will switch to the standard deduction. This means that you will no longer receive a deduction for your charitable contributions. If you are 70 1/2 and are required to take a minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA you can consider a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). This al-lows you to direct some of your RMD to the charity of your choice. You will not be taxed on this money in the year you make the QCD. This contribution must be made directly by your IRA custodian. Consult your tax advisor to be sure you meet all of the qualifications. If you are 70 1/2 this is an easy way to continue to benefit from your charitable contributions.

A big thank-you to the St. Fran-cis Art and Environment volun-teers that worked to create an Advent Worship environment for our Parish family. Jola, Chuck, Maria, Patty, Larry,

Howie, Fran, Joyce, Jack, Claudia, Gerry, Sue, debi and Sandy worked to create a welcoming environment for our parishioners, their families and guests. The Christmas Season is upon us and the art and environment committee is hard at work preparing the church for this important Litur-gical season. If you would like to join this merry band of holiday helpers, please contact: debi Ross @ [email protected] or 708-403-9351. Many, many hands are needed and all are welcome. Absolutely no experience required. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to earn service hours AND support their parish.

accompanying video is available: rejoice-program.com. The Parish Commu-nal Reconciliation is Monday, December 17 at 7:30, as well as individual cele-bration of the Sacra-ment on Saturdays at 11:30. These past weeks I have shared my thoughts regarding the decline in Sun-day Mass attend-ance. The disap-pearance of external cultural support; a personal focus on church teaching; and events in our country have made some skeptical of political leadership and frequently even church leadership. A number of years ago, a priest was preaching about the need for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. To make his point, he took off his shoes, held them up and

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

The Second Sunday of Advent – Christ-mas preparations continue Much time and effort is expended in prepara-tion for Christmas. I encourage families to make some time for spiritual preparation. Some time honored traditions mark these days: an advent wreath- four candles burning for the four weeks of anticipation. Before dinner, (or any time the family is gath-ered) candles are lit, one each week, mark-ing the time to Christ-mas and accompanied by family prayer. Also Advent Calendars are available where a small “window” is opened, daily answer-ing the constantly asked child’s question, “How many days”? The parish is also of-fering a program for spiritual reflection: Rejoice: Advent medi-tations with Mary; an

asked, who will fill these shoes? Today, the church is asking who will fill these pews? Over the years, parents have spoken to me with a similar lament, sharing their experience say-ing, “We brought our children up in the church and now they and their children no longer participate. We feel like we have failed. We don’t know what to do.” Ever the optimist, I en-courage sharing invita-tions or information without judgement – just welcome. On one hand, I find people generous – for exam-ple, we can’t always accommodate the young people who wish to participate on mission trips; the many parish reach out initiatives are well subscribed by those willing to volunteer as well as those will to share clothing, food, money etc. for those with need.

THE ORGIN OF THE NATIVITY SCENE By, Sr. Gael Gensler

St. Francis of Assisi is credited with staging the first nativity scene in 1223. The only histori-cal account we have of Francis’ nativity scene comes from The Life of St. Francis of Assisi by St. Bonaventure, a Franciscan monk who was born five years be-fore Francis’ death. Ac-cording to Bonaven-ture’s biography, St. Francis got permission from Pope Honorious III to set up a manger with hay and two live ani-mals—an ox and an ass—in a cave in the Italian village of Grecio. He then invited the vil-lagers to come gaze upon the scene while he preached about “the babe of Bethle-hem.” (Francis was sup-posedly so overcome by emotion that he couldn’t say “Jesus.”) Bonaven-ture also claims that the hay used by Francis miraculously acquired the power to cure local cattle diseases and pes-tilences.

Francis’ display came in the middle of a pe-riod when mystery or miracle plays were a popular form of enter-tainment and educa-tion for European lay-

On Thanksgiving, Car-dinal Cupich in his homily at St. Francis took up this theme. One of his conclusions was that many, espe-cially the young, seem to experience Mass as simply a gathering of individuals – they don’t realize that their pres-ence is not only nour-

ishing to themselves but supportive to those present. The challenge is to help many see and experience the com-munity nature of the Church not just in reach out programs but in the celebra-tion of the Eucharist.

Secondly, to live with a Church community that is not perfect. The church is a community composed of sinners not saints; each of us must be willing to en-courage holiness and forgive sinfulness.

people. These plays, originally performed in churches and later per-formed in town squares, re-enacted Bible stories in vernacular lan-guages. Since church services at the time were performed only in Latin, which virtually no one understood, miracle plays were the only way for laypeople to learn scripture. Francis’ nativ-ity scene used the same method of visual display to help locals under-stand and emotionally engage with Christiani-ty.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Look around most Catho-lic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Baptist, often in the old baptistery, or in a win-dow near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the cal-endar: one commemorat-ing his birth, and the other his death. There are only three na-tivities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John’s birth-day is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke’s Gospel of the an-gel’s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist’s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample rea-son for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ’s birth in the Incarnation pro-vides cause for rejoicing.
