3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels And Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture Do you feel different this year? What insights have you gained over the past 12 months? In what ways have you changed? What areas in your life need your attention? You may feel like resting for a while. But re-member, you can’t stand in one place indefinitely and be a disciple of Jesus. Christianity requires transformation and conversion, and these changes can take a lifetime. Invest in the resources (people, periodi-cals, books, and worship) that will serve as your walking shoes on your never-ending spiritual journey. Please, keep moving.

Proud to be an American Last year on January 21st I had the oath ceremony for U.S. Citizenship. It has been a year now and I am truly proud and grateful. This last Fri-day, our new president was sworn into the office and as I watched I hoped and prayed that we could all work together for the glory of God and this great country!!! May God Bless the United States of America!!!

SFA Going Green This year at SFA it is not business as usual when it comes to environ-ment. I hope we all can do a little bit more in that regard. Along with New Year’s pledges to diet and exercise, why not slim down your car-bon footprint too? In the United States, this week it’s National Cut Your Energy Costs Day. It’s not just about saving money but also about sav-ing the earth in little ways: Change the furnace filter. Take shorter showers. Insulate leaky sills. Turn off lights in other rooms. Carpool. Love Creation. Glorify its Maker.

Parish App I am happy to announce our new Parish App. Please download it for free to you phones to receive updates and video notifications. (St. Francis of Assisi Orland Park) Let us stay connected and continue our journey closer together

4 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK 01/22/17

January, 2017 Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parishioners: We invite you to attend our Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School Open House on Sunday, January 29, from 1 – 3pm. Sponsored by four parishes (St. Francis of Assisi, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Julie Billiart, and St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr), CJB is your Pre-K through 8th Grade Catholic parish school. We are pleased to announce that CJB offers full-day and half-day 3-year-old and 4-year-old Pre-K and we continue to provide full-day Kindergarten, as well! As we continue to grow, we have so much to be proud of! Did you know that CJB was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence (since 2008) by the U.S. Department of Education?! (This distinction is earned by being in the top 15% of the nation’s schools in Reading and Mathematics, based on the scores of nationally-normed tests.) In addition to Blue Ribbon academic excellence, our faith-based daily religious instruction, shared communal prayer and weekly Mass attendance contribute to shaping the lives of our students. Children are also encouraged to maximize their God-given talents by participat-ing in extra-curricular activities, from athletics to choir to drama club. And, in addition to these opportunities, our students volunteer their time in local community service projects. Our school patron, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, former Archbishop of Chicago, devoted his life to issues of social justice, peace and the sanctity of human life. It is important to us that his legacy remains a part of CJB. We have high expectations of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School students. We chal-lenge them academically, and we strive to instill in them the Gospel values. CJB provides a lov-ing and nurturing environment in which children grow intellectually, spiritually, physically and emotionally. If this is the kind of school that you would like for your child, we look forward to wel-coming you to our Open House on January 29. Sincerely, Rev. Artur Sowa, Pastor Mary Iannucilli, Principal P.S. Registration for the 2017-2018 school year is OPEN now! CJB will continue to accept ap-plications until all spaces are filled. As a registered, practicing parishioner, your children are eli-gible for enrollment at an “in-parish” rate. (“Practicing” parishioners are Catholics who consis-tently attend Mass, send their children to Religious Education or Catholic school, and support their parish with time, talent, and treasure. This is an on-going expectation during years of enroll-ment at CJB. Use of parish envelopes is expected.)

The “Angel Fund”

Each year, across the nation, Catholic schools are recognized at their home parishes at

weekend masses and with special events at school during “Catholic Schools Week.” This year, the celebration for Cardinal Joseph Ber-nardin Catholic School, our parish school, will begin with liturgies at

weekend masses on January 28 and 29. There will be an amaz-ing Open House on Sunday, January 29 from 1p-3p. (If you have never visited your parish school, please make it a point to stop

by!) Then, throughout the week, special events will be held at school, culminating with Bishop Wypych cele-brating our special CSW liturgy on Friday, February 3, 2017. As always, we celebrate the strong program of faith formation at CJB, o u r n a t i o n a l l y -recognized blue-ribbon academics, and the selfless involvement of students and staff in a variety of service pro-jects. Two years ago, CJB’s sponsoring parishes began a special collec-tion known as the “Angel Fund.” This collection is taken up one weekend during the year at the start of Catholic Schools Week. The Angel Fund is meant to assist families from our sponsoring parishes who need help financially, in order to send their children to CJB. Any donation you are able to make is greatly appreciated. This special collection will take place the weekend of January 28 and 29. Thank you for your kindness.

10 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK 01/22/17

Last week we began an overview of parish schools. Cardinal Cody’s decision, not to establish new schools 50 years ago, had a significant impact on the growth of Catholic schools. Up until that deci-sion, a parish elementary school was considered an essential part of a parish. Concurrently, parents were expected to not only provide religious education for their children, they were expected to do so by sending them to the parish school. His decision broke that link. It indicated to parents that sending chil-dren to a public school was an acceptable option – as long as alternate reli-gious education was pro-vided. Cardinal Cody worked to improve parish religious education programs. Par-ishes were encouraged to hire trained directors of religious education. The Archdiocese established an office of Religious Edu-cation to assist parishes. The Office developed ap-

School districts were un-willing to support this and walking, because of dis-tance and safety, was no longer an option. So, reli-gious education classes were transferred to an-other time at the parish and increased parental responsibility. The days after the Council were challenging for reli-gious education; whether in the school or RE. (The previous name was CCD an abbreviation for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine). For many years, religion was taught using a catechism which was a question and an-swer text. A catechism had a series of questions, adjusted for appropriate grade levels and then pro-vided clear answers. The student was to memorize the answers. The challenge was to move away from just memorization. New cate-chetical methods were created to present the material in a more holistic

propriate catechetical materials and provided resources to train volun-teer catechists. Many of the first directors of religious education were religious woman who had previously been full time in the classroom. To assist this transition, Loyola Uni-versity began a depart-ment of Pastoral Studies which enabled these pro-fessionally trained teach-ers and others to receive a Master’s Degree which focused on pastoral minis-try and/or Religious Edu-cation. Prior to Cardinals Cody’s decision, religious educa-tion was provided on a released time basis. This model was used primarily in the city of Chicago. Catholics students were released early on Wednes-day afternoon to attend CCD classes in the parish school. As more and more Catholics moved to the suburbs, this “released time” process was no longer was feasible.

Adult Faith Formation

way – to teach not only information but help the process of integration and formation. So, the hope was for the student to not only learn the information and truths of the faith, but to under-

stand that religious teach-ing was more than just information but to integrate that information into their life and then be motivated to live it out. I got carried away with Religious Education. But I wanted to devote some

space to Religious Educa-tion because it became an alternate to the parish school. Next week, I will write about parish schools.

If the precepts of the Catholic Church are the minimal required to be a practicing Catholic Chris-tian, what more is there? Last week the “practicing” Catholic was defined as one who went to mass on Sundays and Holy Days, went to confession and communion once a year, fasts and abstains on the required days, and pro-vides for the material needs of the Church. These are the precepts of the Church and what is minimally expected of you for “growth in love of God and neighbor.” CCC2041-1043 This is minimal because it is just showing up. It im-plies at least some curios-ity. What more is there? The more is a deep loving relationship with Jesus and the conscious deci-sion to follow him. The “more” is being a disciple of Jesus. Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus? What do you do when life gets hard? Where do you turn when you have an important decision to

make? How often do you talk to Jesus in prayer? Are you open to change in your life? Considering your God given gifts of time, talent, and treasure, what does it look like for you to follow Jesus? Is Jesus the center of all you do? “God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this rea-son, at every time and in

every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength.” (Paragraph 1 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church) Want more? Southwest Suburban Cluster Catechetical Resource Day

Sunday, January 29, 2017 1:30 pm @ St. Julie Billiart Parish, Tinley Park

The Southwest Suburban Cluster of Catechetical leaders has sponsored a formation day for catechists each year since 1984. Catechists convene at St. Julie Billiart for the opportunity to meet other catechists, exchange information, and provide each other support in our effort to share our Catholic faith. This year’s Resource Day gathering will reflect upon the Beatitudes. The afternoon begins with prayer, followed by a keynote presentation by Fr. Ron Lewinski. Break-out Sessions will provide opportunity to reflect and share on the beatitudes and ways to inspire others to know the beatitudes. Catechetical Leaders will facilitate these sessions. Register for this prayerful and enriching experience by visiting sfaorland.org/religious-education and find the registration form under the CATECHIST tab near the bottom of the page.

A HUGE note of thanks to all those volunteers that helped with decorations for Advent and Christmas. It truly takes a village to get this job done and St. Francis is so very lucky to have such a generous group of talented volunteers. The Christmas Season begins with Advent. This year Father Sowa presented us with a challenge and a new presentation of the Advent Candles was devised. We thank Mark Weber for his generous use of the hurricanes needed to complete the task. After striking the Fall dis-plays, our art and environment team (working, rather than shopping on the day AFTER Thanksgiving) prepared the sanctuary, chapel, narthex and exterior of the church. Additionally they prepared the tree for the St. Agatha donations and the Great Room. Throughout the month of December the team gathered to decorate Upton Hall, the Nar-thex and the chapel saving the sanctuary until Christmas week. All in all the team gath-ered 16 times between Thanksgiving and the Feast of the Epiphany. It is with a grateful heart that we thank: Sandy, Joyce, Bonnie, Maria, Chuck, Howie, Fran, Lori, Oriano, Nancy, Phyllis, LouAnn, Debbie, Alice, Anne, Carla, Claudia, De-nise, Sue, Jola, Nancy, Barb, Laurie, Jack, Scott, Brad, Jennifer and MariAnn. Addi-tionally, we should thank Father Sowa, Jim, Monica and Greg. Their wise counsel is much appreciated. Finally, to all those that have voiced kind words and lovely compliments about the work the team does...........to all of you that brought your families and friends to St. Francis for the Christmas services....THANK YOU. Our goal is to create a warm and welcom-ing worship space for the family of St. Francis of Assisi. If you would like to join this merry team of decora-tors.....we need all the hands we can get! Sooooooo, feel free to contact: debi Ross at 708-403-9351 or use the e m a i l : i n [email protected]. All are welcome and greatly appreci-ated. Absolutely no experi-ence required...although if you know how to iron, Maria would love to talk to you! debi Ross Chair, Art and Environment Committee St. Francis of Assisi,

Reflection on today’s readings

LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an at-

las to determine that Isaiah is speaking

about Galilee, today's first reading (part

of which was read at Christmas) is pro-

phetic of Jesus' future ministry in that

province. The light that brings salvation

and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Libera-

tion is the theme: liberation from both ig-

norance ("darkness") and sin (the

"yoke").

As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul de-

scribes an attitude: the attitude that de-

velops, even among good people, of

equating their own will with the common

good. This always brings dissension, and

so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not al-

low this; we are all members of "Christ's

party." The gospel is not to divide us.

Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today's

Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfill-

ment of Isaiah's prophecies. The theme

is "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is

at hand" (Matthew 4:17). To spread this

message, Jesus begins to select disci-

ples, four of whom we meet today: Peter,

Andrew, James, and John.
