a 2011-12 UW Mens Basketball Husky NotesWashington-Duke HistoryWashington has played Duke four times previously and is 1-3 all-time against the Blue Devils. Mike Krzyzewski has been the headman at Duke since the 1980-81 season, so he has been a part ofall four prior match ups. Washington got the better of Duke in thefirst meeting on March 18, 1984 in the second round of the NCAATournament, 80-78. Current UW assistant coach Paul Fortier wasa member of that Husky team. Duke has won three straight sincethat game, cashing in victories at Cameron Indoor Arena in 1985

and 1990 and also a win at Hec Edmundson Pavilion during the 1989 season. That game was a homecomingfor Mercer Island-native Quin Snyder. Saturdays game will be the first time Lorenzo Romar has faced Dukeduring his 16 year career.

Last Time Vs. DukeDion Brown led Washington in scoring with 13 points, Mark West with 12, Brent Merritt with 11 and DougMeekins with 10, but turnovers and foul trouble plagued the Huskies and the No. 12 Duke Blue Devils cameout with a 74-64 victory on Dec. 23, 1989. In front of the sellout crowd of 9,314 at Cameron Indoor StadiumUW outrebounded Duke 19-11 in the first half, but 17 UW first half turnovers were too great to overcome. They dropped the number to 10 in the second half but foul trouble then became an issue. The Huskies out-rebounded Duke as a team, 34-24, holding the Blue Devils to 16 rebounds below their average. The Huskies alsoheld the Blue Devils to just 33.3% shooting (10-for-30) in the first half and 41% for the night, after Duke hadpreviously averaged 53.6% shooting on the season. Duke hit just two of their first 11 shots and went aheadby only two, 37-35, at halftime. Freshman Bobby Hurleys second half effort carried the Blue Devils to victoryscoring 13 of his 15 points and five of his team-high six assists in the final 20 minutes. UW held a narrow lead

48-47, as late as the 14:53 mark of the second half, but Duke answered with a 7-0 run, including a pair of threepointers by Phil Henderson and Hurley, giving Duke a 54-48 advantage that the Huskies couldnt overcomeThe Huskies got within two points, 60-58, at the 10:32 mark of the second half with Mike Haywards two freethrows. They then came within five points, 65-60, when Hayward fouled out with 7:50 left, followed by Brownwith 4:02 left, which helped seal the win for Duke. Christian Laettner led Duke with 19 points and Hendersonscored 18. The 10-point final margin was Dukes largest lead of the game.

Scouting DukeDuke (8-1) was ranked as highs as No. 4 in the country last week before falling at No. 2 Ohio State, 85-63, andsuffering its first loss of the season. The team won the Maui Invitational this year, defeating ranked opponentssuch as Kansas and Tennessee. Duke beat Colorado State on Wednesday before heading to MSQ to take onWashington. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I history with908 wins. Five Blue Devils are scoring in double digits for Duke including, Ryan Kelly, Austin Rivers, MasonPlumlee, Seth Curry and Andrew Dawkins. Duke has four national championships, the last coming in 2010.

Washington headshome on Saturday afternoon after the Duke game.

Tribute To Andrew MoritzThe Huskies played in the Jimmy V Classic to honorthe former coach that displayed a fighting spiritagainst cancer that serves as an inspiration. FormerHusky Basketball walk on Andrew Moritz embodiedthat same fighting attitude through his own bravebattle with cancer. On Nov. 26, Moritz succumbed tohis three-year fight with a rare sarcoma -- desmoplas-tic round cell tumor. Moritz, 33, was a walk-on playerfrom 1996-99 who played on two NCAA tournamentteams. He was diagnosed in 2008 with his diseaseand only given a few months to live. He spent thepast three years fighting cancer with the same spirithe showed on the basketball court. Despite scoringjust 17 points in 78 minutes over 34 games in a 4-yearspan, Moritz was a popular teammate and leader of

his squads. UW honored his memory with a patch dis-playing his initials during the Marquette game.

Cleaning Up The GlassThrough Saturdays action, the Huskies ranked 6thnationally averaging 43.1 rebounds per game. Theygrab over 3 more rebounds per game than the nextclosest Pac-12 team - California. They lead the Pac-12 in both offensive rebounds per game (14.9) anddefensive rebounds (28.3). Six Huskies average 4 ormore boards per game. On the flip side, UW is givingup 35.9 rebounds per game to their opponents, whichranks 11th among Pac-12 teams.

On GuardWashington came into the season with one of the top-rated backcourts in the nation and early on, the Huskiesare living up to the billing. The teams top-three leadingscorer are guards led by 16.6 ppg from Terrence Ross.C.J. Wilcox is not far behind at 15.7 ppg and fresh-man point guard Tony Wroten comes off the benchand contributes 13.0 ppg. The group is doing more than

just scoring, exemplified by Abdul Gaddy, who is thecalming influence on the court. He is 5th among Huskieswith 8.9 ppg and is dishing out 4.9 apg to rank T-2nd inthe conference. Wilcox leads the Pac-12 in 3-pt makesper game and is also tied with Wroten for 4th in steals.Ross pulls down an impressive 7.0 rebounds per gameto rank 9th in the Pac-12 and Wroten is 8th with 3.8assists per game.

UW Bench: No Experience RequiredThe Huskies current starting five and bench playersare stark contrasts in experience. Entering this season,UWs projected starters (NDiaye, Gant, Gaddy, Rossand Wilcox) had a combined 256 college games undertheir belts. With Scott Suggs (84 career games) out due

to injury, the other nine guys had combined to play 23games -- all by walkon Brendan Sherrer who has onlyplayed in games that the Huskies have won by 17 ormore points. The Huskies have eight players on theirroster that entered this year having never played in acollege game during their careers, unless you countDesmond Simmons appearing in last years exhibitiongame vs. St. Martins before deciding to redshirt theseason. Besides Simmons, Washingtons new facesinclude seven true freshmen: Andrew Andrews, Mar-tin Breunig, Jernard Jarreau, Shawn Kemp Jr., HikeemStewart, Tony Wroten and walk-on Alex Wegner. An-drews and Jarreau will redshirt this season.

Welcome Back GaddyLast Saturdays contest vs. Georgia State was AbdulGaddys first game since playing at UCLA on Dec. 31,2010. Gaddy scored 7 points, grabbed a career-high 7rebounds and dished 6 assists. His play caused GeorgiaStates coach Ron Hunter to state: The key to theirbasketball team, is that point guard. (He) controls ev-erything. When he plays well, theyre going to be hardto beat. That kids really good. You can see the glitterwith the other guys, but that point guard hes spe-cial. Gaddy is returning from a season-ending anteriorcruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee sufferedduring practice on Jan. 4, 2011. Gaddy was cleared toreturn to action on Sept. 7, 2011 and has hardly misseda beat. He does not play with a brace and has com-

peted fully since practice started in October. Gaddy wasleading the Pac-10 in assist to turnover ratio at 3.1 (49assists/16 turnovers) when he went down last season. His 3.8 assists per game was the seventh best averagein the Pac-10 Conference and he also ranked ninth inthree-point shooting percentage (40.6%).

Jarreau, from New Orleans, will now join An-drew Andrews on the bench for the year to form part ofthe 2012 freshman class.

Ouches In OctoberBefore the Huskies even started the season, they re-ceived a double dose of bad news. Senior sharpshooterScott Suggs underwent surgery on his right foot onOct. 14. and is expected to miss 8 to 12 weeks -- plac-ing him on pace for a return to action in New York Cityby early December. Highly touted freshman Tony Wro-ten also went down on Oct. 20 and underwent minorarthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Pac-12 NotesPac-12 Underway

Colorado and Utah joined the Pac-10 to form the Pac-12. It marks the first additions to the conference sinceArizona and Arizona State joined the conference in1978-79. As in previous years, the conference scheduleis comprised of 18 games for each institution and willmaintain the travel partner in a non-divisional format. The annual schedule will include games against aninstitutions traditional rival both home and away. Inaddition, each institution will play six other opponentsboth home and away (for two consecutive years), andfour opponents on a single game basis - two at homeand two away. The single-play opponents will rotateevery two years. This year Washington misses Cal andStanford in the Bay Area and will not host Utah andColorado.
