    2010-11 Record: 24-11 overall, 11-7 Pac-10

    Georgia State, Florida Atlantic and Portland join UW (24-11) in

    the World Vision Classic at Alaska Airlines Arena (Nov. 12-14).

    UW Basketball Kicks Off 110th SeasonThe Huskies (0-0) open their 10th season under head coach LorenzoRomar (110th overall season in UW history dating back to 1896)against Georgia State on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. in AlaskaAirlines Arena (KKNW 1150 AM). Washington will play host to theWorld Vision Basketball Classic, which will run Saturday, Nov. 12through Monday, Nov. 14. Joining UW in the round-robin tourna-ment besides Georgia State are Portland and Florida Atlantic. Eachteam will play three games over three days, with a champion andall-tournament team declared at the conclusion of play on Monday.

    For OpenersWashington is 7-2 in season-openers under Romar, losing their

    home opener in Romars first season in 2002-03 vs. Montana Stateand at Portland in 2008-09. Last year, the Huskies opened the sea-son with a 118-64 victory over McNeese State, equaling the thirdhighest scoring output in UW history.

    The 2011-12 Dawgs Washington returns 42.2 percent of its scoring and 43.2 percentof its rebounding from last years team that went 24-11 overall, wonthe Pac-10 Conference Tournament and advanced to the third roundof the NCAA Tournament. Washington loses three starters (Matthew Bryan-Amaning,Justin Holiday and Isaiah Thomas) from last season but returnssix players that started at least four games and combined for 69starts. Aziz NDiaye leads the way with 25 starts under his beltlast season, but Darnell Gant has made 56 career starts whileAbdul Gaddy has 42. The Huskies have eight players on their roster that enter this yearhaving never played in a college game during their careers, unlessyou count Desmond Simmons appearing in last years exhibitiongame vs. St. Martins before deciding to redshirt the season. Be-sides Simmons, Washingtons new faces include seven true fresh-men: Andrew Andrews, Martin Breunig, Jernard Jarreau, Shawn

    Kemp Jr., Hikeem Stewart, Tony Wroten and walk-on Alex Wegner.

    About Georgia StateThe Georgia State Panthers are coming off a 12-19 season (6-12, Co-lonial Athletic Association) in 2011. They are led by veteran first-yearcoach Ron Hunter. Hunter spent the previous 17 seasons at IUPUI, wherehe compiled a 293-219 record. Despite their record, the Panthers canclaim a victory over eventual Final Four participant VCU last season.

    Georgia St. returns four starters from last season, led by 6-8 forwardEric Buckner. So far, the Panthers have won their two exhibition con-tests, 90-65 over Southern Poly and 90-49 against Ogelthorpe. Senior Brandon McGee led the Panthers in thetwo games with 18.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg.

    About Florida AtlanticFour starters return for a Florida Atlantic team that went 21-11 last season, including 13-3 in Sun Belt Confer-ence action. The Owls won the East Division in the 12-team conference and went on to play in the NIT. Coachinglegend Mike Jarvis is entering his fourth season a Georgia State and is hoping to lead his fourth different teamto the NCAA Tournament.     UW Vs. PortlandWashington holds the all-time series advantage 13-2, including 8-0 all-time at home versus the Pilots, beatingthem 94-72 last season. Coach Lorenzo Romar is 6-4 all-time against Portland, 3-3 as coach at Pepperdine and3-1 at UW.

    About PortlandThe Portland Pilots are coming off their second-consecutive 20-win season for the first time in their Division history. Head Coach Eric Reveno has led the Pilots to three-consecutive trips to the post-season CIT and is 77-81in five years at the helm. Nemanja Mitrovic is the top returner from a 20-12 squad (7-7, WCC) after averaging13.6 ppg and 46.3% from 3-pt range. The Pilots are going to be young this season as Mitrovic is the only playethat has more than one year under his belt at Portland.

    Coach Lorenzo Romar (10th Yr. at Washington, 16th Yr. Overall)The 2009 & 2005 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Lorenzo Romar is in his 10th season asthe 18th head mens basketball coach at Washington. Romar is the dean of coachingin the Pac-12 having spent more seasons at Washington than any other current Pac-12 coach at their school. Romar owns a 195-102 (.658) record at Washington andis 288-190 (.603) in 16 seasons as a head coach. The first African-American headbasketball coach at UW, he moved tothird all-time in victories at UW after passingTippy Dye on Jan. 16, 2010. That win was also the 250th overall during his coachingcareer. Romar has led Washington to six NCAA tournament Appearances -- all in

    spurts of three-consecutive seasons (2004-05-06 & 2009-10-11) -- and the schoolsfirst back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances (2005 & 06). Overall, he has led Washingtonto three Sweet 16 appearances. He was the 2005 Pac-10 and Black Coaches Association Coach of the Year.Romar played point guard for Marv Harshmans 1979 and 1980 teams and spent five years in the NBA aftercollege. Prior to UW, Romar served as the head coach at Saint Louis (1999-02) and Pepperdine (1996-99) andwas an assistant coach at UCLA (1992-96) - He helped lead the Bruins to the 1995 national title. A nativeof Compton, Calif., he graduated from Pius X High School. Romar and his wife, Leona, have three daughters:Terra, Tavia and Taylor - a current UW cheerleader.

    Dawg Bites...Gaddy Returns From ACL InjuryJunior Abdul Gaddy, one of the Huskies three teamcaptains, is returning from a season-ending anterior cru-ciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee suffered duringpractice on Jan. 4, 2011. Gaddy was cleared to return toaction on Sept. 7, 2011 and has hardly missed a beat.

    He does not play with a brace and has competed fullysince practice started in October. Gaddy was leading thePac-10 in assist to turnover ratio at 3.1 (49 assists/16turnovers) when he went down last season. His 3.8assists per game was the seventh best average in thePac-10 Conference and he also ranked ninth in three-point shooting percentage (40.6%). A starter in all 13games, Gaddy raised his scoring average to 8.5 pointsper game, up from 3.9 ppg as a freshman. Overall, Gaddyhad played in 49 games, 42 starts - 41 of which havecame consecutively.

    Senior StatementsDarnell Gant and Scott Suggs have a chance to be-come the first Huskies to EVER make four NCAA Tour-

    naments. They have already had a championship-ladencareer earning the 2009 Pac-10 regular season cham-pionship, plus the 2010 and 2011 Pac-10 TournamentChampionships. The Dawgs are 76-30 over their firstthree seasons. The pair also share team captain dutieswith Gaddy.

    Three AmigosWashington shot and made a school record 305 three-pointers in 821 attempts in 2010-11. The Huskies returnthree of five players who each hit at least 44 3-point-ers, led by a UW freshman record 63 from C.J. Wilcox.Scott Suggs made 49 in 109 attempts (45%) to finishthird in the Pac-10 percentage-wise and fifth in UW sin-gle-season history. Suggs has made 89 three-pointers inhis career, the 10th most in UW history. Terrence Rosshit 44 as a true freshman.

    Ouches In OctoberBefore the Huskies even started the season, they receiveda double dose of bad news. Senior sharpshooter ScotSuggs underwent surgery on his right foot on Oct. 14. andis expected to miss 8 to 12 weeks -- placing him on pace foa return to action in New York City by early December. High-ly touted freshman Tony Wroten also went down on Oct20 and underwent minor arthroscopic surgery on his righknee. He was able to return in time to play in the Nov. 4exhibition game and should be ready for the regular season

    Broadway DawgsIn conjunction with the Huskies trip to New York City toparticipate in the Jimmy V Classic and CARQUEST AutoParts Classic, the 15 members of the team are taking anindependent study drama class. Players have been attending seminars on the history of Broadway, the study andreading of plays plus the basics of acting, directing andproducing in theater. Then once in New York, the plan isto attend at least two Broadway productions over someof the six days there outside the Dec. 6 game day againsMarquette and the Dec. 10 date against Duke. UW dramaprofessor Shanga Parker will teach the independent study

    course while fulfilling his professional responsibilities as adirector. He is planning to accompany the Huskies to NewYork and onto Broadway to give expert eyes to what theplayers are seeing.

    Seven Dawgs In The NBASeven former Huskies that played or were recruited byLorenzo Romar are currently in the NBA. Nate Robinsonis the veteran of the bunch having played six NBA sea-sons, most recently with Oklahoma City. Brandon Roy haplayed five years with the Portland, while Spencer Haweshas four seasons in the NBA - last year with PhiladelphiaJon Brockman has played two NBA seasons, one withSacramento and one with Milwaukee. Quincy Pondextewas a 2010 first round pick and played for New OrleansMartell Webster, who never played at UW but signedhas played six years, last season with Minnesota. IsaiahThomas hopes to join the fray when the lockout ends aftebeing selected in the second round by Sacramento.

    aAlaska Airlines Arena At Hec Edmundson Pavilion

    UW Leads Division I With Most All-Time Wins At Their Home ArenaWashington has 861 wins inside of Hec Edmundson Pavilion, the most by any Division I team at its current homearena. Minnesota has the next most at its arena -- Williams Arena -- more than 50 behind UW.

    Friendly Confines Of HomeLosing at Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion is rare under coach Lorenzo Romars watch. They areespecially tough during the non-conference slate. The Huskies have won 23 straight non-conference games at Alaska

    Airlines Arena, dating back to a 72-71 home loss on March 14, 2008 in the College Basketball Invitational to Val-paraiso. In nine years with Romar at the helm, UW is 129-25 (.838) overall at home, 66-5 (.930) in non-Pac-10games.Last season Washington won by an average of +20.8 points at home and dating back to the 2010 season hadwon a team-record 14-straight games by 10 or more points before losing to WSU on Feb. 27, 2011.

    Naming Rights Of Alaska Airlines ArenaAlaska Airlines and the University of Washington announced a partnership in 2011 to rename UWs on-campus bas-ketball arena Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The arena sponsorship is part of a five-year agree-ment to support University of Washington Athletics approved by the universitys Board of Regents. Alaska Airlineshas committed $525,000 annually in cash and trade for the arena naming rights in addition to the airlines $175,000ongoing athletics sponsorship. Court signage, including the Alaska Airlines logo, were unveiled at the Arizona gameand exterior signage will be installed within the next eight weeks.

    A founding member of the Pacific Coast Conference in

    1915, Washington enjoys a long-lasting association

    with the nations most successful intercollegiate athletic

    Introducing The Young PupsOf Washingtons 15-man roster, eight players will beseeing their first college action. Seven are true fresh-men and one is a red-shirt freshman. The Huskieshave never have as many freshmen on their varsitysquad to start a season. The collection of newcom-ers is headlined by 6-foot-5 Tony Wroten, who wasone of the top point guard recruits last year. The mostfamiliar name of the group is 6-foot-9 Shawn Kemp,Jr. who is the son of the former Sonics legend. GuardHikeem Stewart is also a familiar name as his broth-ers -- twins, Rodrick (USC/Kansas) and Lodrick (USC)-- played collegiately. Forwards Martin Breunig andJernard Jarreau give UW three newcomers thatstand taller than 6-foot-8. Forward Desmond Sim-mons redshirted last season and is chomping at tobe unleashed. Alex Wegner is a walk-on that playedin four state tournaments while at Vashon Island HS,and Andrew Andrews is a touted point guard fromOregon that will redshirt this season.

    Husky Block PartyLast season, Washington amassed 179 blocks -- the

    most in UW single-season history surpassing theprevious record of 151 set in 2010. Among returners,Aziz NDiaye had 39 blocks to tie for the eighth mostin UW single-season history. With an average heightof 6-foot-6 and 1/2, the Huskies are poised to threat-en the blocks record for a third-consecutive season.

    Vs. Ranked FoesThe Huskies were 1-4 against teams ranked in theAP top-25 during the 2010-11 season. Their lone wincame over No. 16 Arizonza in the championship of thePac-10 tournament. Overall, the UW is 28-57 againstAP ranked opponents since Jan. 1, 2000. UW has wonits last four against ranked foes in the confines ofAlaska Airlines Arena and are 16-5 over the last 21

    contests against ranked foes at home. Overall, Wash-ington is 19-14 all-time at home during the decade.UW had lost its previous 8 decisions against rankednon-conference opponents before ending a three-yeardrought by beating Texas A&M on Dec. 22, 2009.

    Pac-12 NotesPac-12 Underway

    Colorado and Utah joined the Pac-10 to form the Pac-12. It marks the first additions to the conference sinceArizona and Arizona State joined the conference in1978-79. As in previous years, the conference sched-ule is comprised of 18 games for each institution and

    will maintain the travel partner in a non-divisional for-mat. The annual schedule will include games againstan institutions traditional rival both home and away.

    In addition, each institution will play six other oppo-nents both home and away (for two consecutive years),and four opponents on a single game basis - two athome and two away. The single-play opponents willrotate every two years. This year Washington missesCal and Stanford in the Bay Area and will not host Utahand Colorado.

    UW Picked Fourth In Pac-12 PollThe Huskies were picked to finish fourth in the Pac-12by a poll of media that cover the conference. Wash-ington garnered 355 points. UCLA was selected as thefirst-ever winner of the league by a very close margin.The Bruins received 14 first-place votes and tallied 421total points. Cal was close behind with 405 points and13 first-place nods. Arizona made it a three-team raceby picking up 404 points and 11 first-place votes.

    Last Year UW/Pac-10 Notes UW finished third in the Pac-10 for the second-con-secutive season. The Huskies have finished third or bet-ter six times in Romars nine seasons.

    UW swept UCLA for just the third time ever (2006and 1987)

    UW started 7-1 in the Pac-10 for the first time since1986.

    The Huskies started 4-0 in Pac-10 play for the firsttime since 1984 when they jumped out of the gate 6-0.

    UW had its longest Pac-10 win streak since the con-ference formed in 1978 with 11-straight games datingback to the 2010 season, including three Pac-10 Tourna-ment games.
