Internships and Insight Weeks 2011/2012 PresentationPresented by the University of Birmingham Economics Society

Aim of today is to make sure you go away with as much information as possible to help you get the internship you want and crucially know how to succeed in applications.

Why you should I be thinking about an internship this early

on?

• The Reality is some people already have Internships offers

• LSE/Oxbridge/Warwick are better prepared than you and have better opportunities

• You need to be applying for things now! – Basic Rule the earlier you apply the better!

• Deadlines are for Chumps

Today’s Focus

• A strong emphasis is going to be on applications to investment banks, (as they are notoriously competitive) however the general principles will apply to all internships

• Hopefully going to give you a better idea of what to expect when trying to secure an internship

What are Insight weeks and Internships?

• Insight week – Weeks work experience in Spring. Large number of candidate get fast tracked to Internships like this!

• (for students in the First year of a three year course OR Second year of a four year course)

• Internships – 3 Month Analyst Position in the city. If you show your value over the 3 Months, many candidates are offered a full time position (but the work you HARD!)

• (for Student in Second year of a three year course OR Third year students on a four year course) – “Penultimate year”

Who offers Spring Weeks?

Professional Services (PWC, KPMG, Deloitte, Ernst & Young)• Tax / Audit / Consulting

Most firms that offer insight weeks will offer Internship, but there are also loads that offer just Internships.Milkround do NOT know everything, there are loads of firms available – do not pigeonhole yourself into just looking at these website!

Online Application- Basic Information- CV/Cover Letter- Work Experience- Competency Questions

Online testing-Normally Numerical/verbal reasoning/ nonverbal reasoning-SHL / Others (all timed)-Practice, Practice, Practice!

Phone interview-Competency Based-General knowledge about the Firm/Motivations/Market knowledge

First Round Interviews/Assessment centre-Typically competency based interviews -Numeracy Tests (again)-Group Exercises – Presentation – Teamwork Exercises

Finally if your lucky an Offer!

What To Be Doing Now

Decide what your are applying for:

-Have a look at the different roles and decide what you will be best suited for and have an interest in. Make sure you know exactly why you are best suited to one role and not others!- How does your work experience make you ideal for the roles that you are applying for!

CV

– Have a strong CV written that will convince employer that they should choose you over other candidates.(1 page typically) – Careers Service will help with this

What To Be Doing Now

Network

• Meet people who actually work in the City and ideally work for the firms that you will be applying for.

• Come to our Careers Events! – Make sure you get noticed! We run these events for your benefit, so make sure you attend as much as possible!

Motivations/Competencies:

• Be able to state why you want to work in this industry

• What attracted you to a particular role• What skills do you have that will benefit them• If your not doing anything get involved asap!

- Start reading the FT, Economist start following the markets, the keener you are the greater your chances of success!

- Pressure Trading Game – November 23rd – Register online –http://www.pressuretrade.com

- Financial Forum! – Network with Students and Recruiters- Societies – Investment Society and EconSoc will be looking for

people to get involved and lessen our work load – future leaders- Bloomberg Assessment Test – This is a great tool to make you

stand our from other candidates!

• Plan – Decide how you are going to approach each application, keep everything together

• Application – Ensure that you are doing everything prefect – get someone else to check it. UoB Careers. Print it.

• Numeracy – Do loads of practice, this is a easy way to sort out weak candidates. Try to do as much on your calculator, keep writing to a minimum. Practice materials available at SHL and Kenexa/PSL. (and our useful links)

• Interviews – Make sure you know how your getting to the assessment centre, know as much as possible about the firm
