STANDERTON - The leaking sewage in Charl Cilliers Street in the CBD in front of Eastvaal Motors Standerton is not only an eyesore but a health hazard to workers who have to endure the unbearable smell of human waste.

An employee of the dealership, who wants to remain anonymous, said the leak has been ongoing for at least a week. He confirmed that it was reported to Lekwa Local Municipality, but up until Monday 8 February, nothing was done to rectify the situation. The Manager of the Technical Department, Mr H Shai, said he was not aware of the problem. He promised to send workers from the Department of Water and Sanitation to repair the leak as a matter of urgency. DM

Several thousand litres of clean water has gone to waste after a pipe burst in Nelson Mandela Drive on Thursday, 4 February. This particular leak was more hazardous than usual, because of elec-tric cables from a removed traffic light, were lying in the water. The water flowed unhindered for the whole of Thursday, but repair work was carried out on Friday.

Health hazard to be resolved

Sewage has been pouring from the manhole in front of Eastvaal Motors in Charl Cilliers Street for a couple of days. The Manager of the Technical Department, Mr H Shai, said he was not aware of the problem. At print, it was confirmed by the personnel of Eastvaal Motors that no repairs have been done.

PRETORIA – The murder case of the late Stanwest Combined School teacher, Mr Nzi-meni Sithathu, has finally ended in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday, 1 February. Nzimeni’s death was initially depicted incor-

Family finds closure in murder caserectly as suicide because the orchestrators of his death hanged him in his house in Roo-ikoppen in February of 2012 to hide evidence. His controversial wife Portia Tsotetsi, the victim’s wife and Nhlahla Dube were found guilty and sentenced. Evidence in court proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Portia was the initiator and mastermind behind the death of her late husband. She was sentenced 20 years in prison. On the second count of murder, Portia was found guilty for the mur-der of the alleged hit man Dumisane Ngubeni - she was consequently sentenced another 20 years behind bars. Both sentences will run concurrently.

The first co-accused, Nhlahla Dube, was sentenced to life imprisonment, the second co-accused, Motsamai Mahlasela, died in

custody last year before the case was final-ized. Mangaliso Sithathu, the brother of the deceased said: “As a family we feel the state should have imposed a heavier sentences on Portia Tsotetsi, rather than Nhlahla Dube, be-cause she initiated and orchestrated our broth-er’s murder. We accept the fact that in the end justice has been done. We are pleased that the perpetrators will spend time behind bars. It is worth mentioning that the sentences will not bring back our beloved family member but it brings consolation and closure to the family.”

Mangaliso further said: “The Sithathu fam-ily would like to thank Detective Constable Mkhabela and his colleagues at Sakhile Police Station for their hard work to bring the perpe-trators to book. Their dedication to crack the case ended in a successful conviction.” DM

‘n Inbreker het Vrydag, 5 Februarie, helder oor dag by ‘n woning in Stefinastraat ingebreek.

(Miga 6:8)

Mense is ʼn bietjie soos grond.

Time doesn’t stand still for Ahmed Dadoo (62). He remembers the jewellery shop that he and his dad had from 1976 to 2002 that was named Monument Jewellers in the Monument Centre. Ahmed was born in Standerton and lived here all his life. He said he learned about the jewellery business from his dad and developed a passion for repairing watches. He eventually went on a watch repairing course in Cape Town and he is still fixing watches to this day.

REGIONAL - Simphiwe Given Hlophe, an Electrical En-gineering student from Gert Sibande TVET College, Sibane-setfu Campus, has achieved an extraordinary academic feat of obtaining 20 distinctions out of a possible 21 in his NCV programme. This is a new record for Gert Sibande TVET College and possibly the whole country.

Simphiwe obtained seven distinctions in his first year, sev-en distinctions in his second year and six distinctions and a B-symbol in his final year. His average percentage per subject over three years stands at a remarkable 87%. In his second year he obtained 100% for Mathematics which was another record for the college. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that it was achieved in the Engineering Faculty.

Simphiwe is 25 years old and was raised by a single parent. He is one of four children and completed his matric in 2009. His dream was to study Chemical Engineering at university after matric, but due to financial problems and his poor mat-ric results, he could not further his studies. Simphiwe was forced to seek employment so that he could provide for his mother, who is wheelchair bound. “I sometimes went to bed on an empty stomach and at some point I stayed for many days without food,” said Hlophe. While Hlophe worked at a local butchery, he realised that if he wanted to improve his career prospects he needed to further his studies.

In January 2013, Hlophe enrolled at Gert Sibande TVET College: Sibanesetfu Campus for Electrical Infrastructure Construction. This opportunity was made possible by the DHET bursary that he received. It covered his class fees and accommodation. In the first year, Hlophe obtained seven dis-tinctions. “I surprised myself with my results because I did not expect to get so many distinctions,” he said with a smile. The college awarded him with a tablet for this achievement.

This award spurred him to aim even higher. According to Hlophe, the second year proved to be more difficult although he still managed to obtain seven distinctions and was award-ed with a second tablet. He appreciated the recognition and awards that he received from the College and the support that he received from Sibanesetfu Campus staff members who sometimes assisted him with food and other small expenses.

His family background and adverse situation motivated him to persevere even though at times he felt like giving up. “I wanted to better my family’s situation and that was the only thing that kept me going. It is said that before dawn it gets darker,” he said. Hlophe’s secret to academic excellence is to “do what you love.” His future plans include studying further and to own and manage his own company that will specialise in electronics.

When discussing his achievement with the College Princi-pal, Nick Balkrishen, Simphiwe remained humble. Simphiwe thanked the College for opening up a campus in such a re-mote, rural area. He indicated that his success was linked to the tremendous support that students at Gert Sibande TVET College receive and especially the emphasis the college places on student academic performance. Simphiwe also expressed his gratitude to the Government for creating opportunities for rural students from poor homes. “I would not have been able to achieve these results without the DHET bursary and the amazing support that I received from the college, especially my lecturers”, he said. For this outstanding achievement Sim-phiwe will be presented with a laptop at the campus awards ceremony to be held in the middle of February.

Dr Enrico Pedro, the acting regional manager for Mpuma-langa, was ecstatic when he heard of Simphiwe’s achieve-ments. “I would like to congratulate Simphiwe Hlophe of Gert Sibande TVET College on his 20 out of 21 distinc-

tions over the three years of the NCV Electrical Engineer-ing Programme. This is indeed an outstanding and promising achievement. Simphiwe, you have done all of us proud. We will follow your future career with interest, as we are certain your achievements will soon be many more,” commented Dr Pedro. JD

STANDERTON – With crime on the rampage in our community, the schools are also on the receiving end which is detrimental to the culture of teaching and learn-ing. Standerton Community Policing Forum, in partner-ship with the SAPS, have embarked on a mission to re-cruit pupils from different schools to ensure a maximum participation in order to fight crime and claim the right to teach and be taught in an environment free from criminal activities.

Over the past three weeks, teachers from primary and secondary schools attended meetings with the CPF’s Ex-ecutive Committee. The purpose of the meetings was to establish school safety forums that consist of different stakeholders such as parents, school governing bodies, teachers and pupils. The forums will take safety forward at schools, provide valuable information to teachers of any criminal activities and in addition, every school will adopt a police officer that will be directly involved in ad-dressing all crime related challenges and make regular visits to lead awareness campaigns.

The concept was welcomed by pupils and teachers as

well as all the stakeholders. The CPF strongly believes that pupils can play a big role in fighting crime in our society.

On Wednesday, 3 February, the CPF Youth Forum was launched at Standerton Police Station. Each secondary school that falls under the Standerton policing area was represented by pupils and a teacher. Stanwest Combined School, Azalea Combined School, Thuto-Thebe, Kunjuli-we, Sikhethelini and George Hofmeyr with the exception of Holmdene Secondary School, elected the Executive Committee with members: Chairperson, Mxolisi Solomt-zi; Deputy Chairperson, Ayanda Madela; Secretary, Jino Rooineck; Deputy Secretary, Sophia Tsotetsi; Organisers, Sinesipho Xamalashi and Keabetsoe Nkosi; Spokesper-son, Nthabiseng Radebe and Additional Member, Sfiso Shongwe.

The committee will mobilise young people at schools and the community at large to fight crime. Their mandate is to assist the police and communities to fight drug traf-ficking, gangsters, bullying, alcohol abuse by young peo-ple, unruly behaviour at schools and other criminal activi-

STANDERTON - Ever increasing cases of burglary and housebreaking at a block of flats in Meyerville and central town has become a concern to police. The festive season was relatively quiet, but since the beginning of January reports on burglary at flats have been coming thick and fast ac-cording to Lieutenant Nhlabathi. Records show that most of the burglaries take place during the day when residents have gone to work and children are at school.

Thugs have the freedom of movement and in the process they identify their next target.

Police are urging residents to form

neighbourhood watch forums and start to interact and exchange contact numbers and in the event that a suspicious situation un-folds they can communicate. It is reported that a syndicate of three suspected thugs, two white males in the early twenties and one Indian man are specializing in stealing plasma TVs. Most of the flat dwellers are assumed to be in Standerton for work and study purposes from other places.

The danger is that whenever they leave their flats, they may come back to a home with stolen items.

Police urge residents to communicate and remain vigilant at all times. DM

STANDERTON - Lieutenant Nhlabathi of the Standerton SAPS issued a warning to the community of Standerton. It came under his attention that several criminal cases have been opened where the complainant states that they were scammed out of money that they payed as a deposit on a vehicle adver-tised on the internet.

The seller presumably says that there are several buyers interested, but will keep the

vehicle for you after a deposit is paid. This is the last that you will ever see of your money. After a deposit is paid, the seller also disap-pears.

Nhlabathi urges the community to be more alert and to not pay money into an unknown person’s bank account just because he sounds friendly and honest. Potential buyers must also first inspect the goods that they wish to purchase. JD

Hier is ‘n paar wenke:

Verminder kennisgewings.
