what most people envi-when they think ofntain living, but it mightgreat compromise toouple that cant decidebeach or mountaine.other factor to look at isher or not you are inof medical facilities at aproximity. It is definite-

rth considering, espe-if you are buying your

nd home with hopes toin it someday, or evenhave a family that

    t need emergency serv-

    any mountain towns do

local clinics and smalltals, but a lot of themervices like Flight forr AIR-EVAC helicop-nd ambulances in case

need to rush someonee mountain in an emer-y. You also might wantsearch how far away thest metropolitan area is,

se you need periodicments for certain med-

ical conditions that wouldnot be available in a small, mountain medical facility.Keep in mind that mileageon paper seems a lot shorterthan mileage on a snowy, slick, icy road in the middleof a storm.

But, researching the areais key. Many ski resorttowns are building or havecompleted state-of-the-artmedical facilities and hospi-tals in order to offer their vis-itors and residents peace ofmind. Two examples includethe Vail Valley Medical Cen-ter in Vail, which offers thefinest in medical technology. It boasts an internationallyacclaimed orthopedic center, the Stedman-Hawkins Clinic Monica Seles had basic

rehabilitation here after shewas stabbed in the back by afan of Steffi Graf in 1993 as well as a continued focuson quality improvements tobenefit the community. An-other example would be thefacilities in the Ozark Moun-tain Region. Their healthservices also feature top-of-the-line hospitals and clinicslike, The North ArkansasRegional Medical Center(NARMC) in Harrison andThe Baxter Regional Med-ical Center (BRMC) inMountain Home. With anabundance of private andspecialist physicians, pa-tients at either facility aresure to receive the latest inmedical techniques andservices.

Before buying a secondhome, its important to de-fine what you want out ofyour second home. Will it bea refuge in the mountains toescape to during free week-

ends with your family? Is it aplace to go once or twice ayear on holidays? Or will itbe held on to purely for theinvestment?

If it will be a place for thefamily to enjoy, there areseveral tips to consider.First, take a bit of time be-fore jumping into a pur-chase. Make sure you knowthe area well maybe visit

several times at different pe-riods (slow tourist times aswell as peak holiday times)just to see if it is appealing toyou year-round. Maybe renta few times and really get toknow the locals ask whatthey like about the moun-

tains and what they dislike and figure out whichneighborhoods would bebest. Will you be stranded ifthere is a snowstorm be-cause you have a beautifulmountain home in the mid-dle of a national forest that isinaccessible to snow-remov-al equipment? Or will youdecide that you want to be inthe middle of the action andbuy a home that overlooksthe town center or is ski-inski-out? Will it be a weekend

getaway? If so, be sure topick a spot thats relativelyquick and easy to access probably no more than 3hours by car or an hour byplane. Otherwise, you mayfind thats its too expensiveto get to and youll end upusing it far less than you hadanticipated, lowering the val-ue of your investment.

Also, if the home is a re-treat for the family, bear inmind the ages of your chil-dren. Will weekend sports

games, birthday parties, orstudying take priority overtraveling? Will the kids feelleft out of weekend socialevents and start to resent thehome? Many families find

that younger children dontmind getting away to play inthe mountains, but discoverthemselves with a For Salesign and hammer as soon asthe kids hit puberty. But,there are many families whodecide to buy just as their

children are hitting thosecritical teen years. Theywant to make sure that theirchildren have a place tocome with family to escapethe daily pressures put onteens today. In many cases,it is a way of solidifying thefamily unit. Its commonknowledge that families thatbuy vacation homes tend totake more family vacations.

Retirement living is alsosomething that has begun togain importance, as baby-

boomers are getting closerto the age of retirement. Willthe home be in a place inwhich you could see yourselfretiring? If your secondhome will be your retire-ment home, weigh the ad-vantages and disadvantages.Look at the quality of life, cost of living, amenities, shopping, and as mentionedearlier, medical facilities. Un-derstand that there are cer-tain trade-offs for switchingfrom city to mountain life.

Many would gladly tradetraffic, pollution, high stress, mega shopping centers anduniversity hospitals for dirtroads, fresh mountain air, small family-owned bou-

A white Christmas meansthere is snow on the groundand snow on the groundeventually adds up to mois-ture in the ground and mois-ture in the ground meansgood crops, maybe fewerforest fires, the smell andthe look of green grasspushing up through a snow

bank and paying a little less

for hay. It means water in

    the lakes for irrigation, fish-

    ing, swimming, and boating.

    Water for drinking and

    greening up your lawn.

    We started a garden last

    summer. We enjoyed the

    spuds and other vegetables

we raised and when the har-

    enjoyed digging for worms.

    Watering the garden as well

as the trees and lawn by

Happy New Year ... the first grade ad

    This weeks article was

    everyone uses writing at

    e you can see how

    ght make you more

    chart is good. She also

    us that she uses writing

    er article every week.

    Her article tells everyone

    healthy stuff and thats a

    good thing, because if you

    know more healthy stuff you

    will get healthier.

    My mom asked my class

    to write about what being

    healthy means to us, since

    we were practicing writing

    skills and talking to profes-

    sionals about writing in the

    grown-up world. She asked

    us to answer this question,

How can you stay healthy in

the New Year? So here is

    what my class thinks about

    staying healthy:

    You can stay healthy by

    Please know that phonics
