There   is   a   saying:  The  more   things   change,   the  more   they   remain   the   same.     I   have   been   noticing   that,  myself,  lately.    This  year,  the  Foundation  invited  Ms.  Tami  Kesselman  to  join  us  as  the  YA  Co-­‐Chair.    She  has  brought  us  new  and  fresh  ideas,  a  wide  assortment  of  extremely  impressive  speakers  and  panelists,  and   a   clear   vision   that   adds   to   the   success   of   the   program.  We   are   proud   to   have   her   with   us.     Last  September,   in   Bonn,   I   was   asked   to   be   Treasurer   for   the   UN   Department   of   Public   Information  conference.     There   nearly   2000   NGO   leaders   began   to   form   what   may   become   the   new,   SDGs:   the  

Sustainable  Development  Goals,  for  the  future  beyond  the  current  MDGs.    Finally,  this  June,  the  UN  (and  many  well-­‐connected  young  people!)  met  again  in  Rio  to  examine  the  pressing  issue  of  sustainability.    New  people,  new  paradigms,  new  energy  but  all  in  response  to  eternal  challenges  that  are  indicative  of  our  human  frailties.  The  struggles,  opportunities,  and  crises  we  face  remain  the  ones  we  faced  before,  in  different  incarnations  or  forms.        A  great  writer  once  noted  that  the  world  seems  doomed  nearly  every  day,  but  always  makes  it   ‘by  the  skin  of  its  teeth’  and  moves   on.     To   that   I   will   add   that   these   new   forces,   changes,   people,   and   ideas   all   help   us   understand   anew   the   human  condition  and  our  longstanding  challenges  to  promote  peace  and  development.  And,  this  is  the  value  of  a  youthful  eye  on  these  age-­‐old  issues,  now  and  forever  more.    Although  the  issues  never  seem  to  change,  it  is  up  to  you  as  youth  to  help  move  humanity  forward  as  it  implements  new  techniques  and  inventions   that  will   affect  each  of   those  challenges  and  opportunities   in  brand  new  and   indefinable  ways.    This  is  your  moment;  make  the  most  of  it,  and  help  each  other.    Now,  like  the  MDGs  to  the   SDGs,   help   bring   the   concept   of  ‘development’   out   of   the   past   into   a   new   and  brighter  focus  and  future  for  us  all.        Seize  the  day!

Finalists present to all YA delegates during the Youth Assembly’s Resolution Social

Venture Forum on Aug 2nd and then present in front of a panel of judges on Aug 3rd. Winning pitches will be announced on Friday in the U.N. General Assembly Hall and will receive a Resolution Fellowship grant of up to US $3,000 and a year of mentorship support. There are already 28 Fellows on six continents working in diverse, high-impact fields including education, healthcare, human rights & water resources. Will you or one of your friends be next?

Venue   Notes:   Due   to   the   Capital   Master   Plan   (CMP)   at   the   United   Nations   and   the   Rio+20   Summit   (which  moved  an  important  arms  treaty  back  into  conflict  with  our  schedule),  the  Youth  Assembly  this  year  will  take  advantage   of   the   entire,   extended   UN   campus   for   its   program.    We  will   of   course   open   and   close   in   the   UN  General   Assembly   Hall.   In   fact,   the   YA  will   be   one   of   the   very   last   major   events   in   the   GA   prior   to   its   long  overdue  closure  for  major  renovations  as  part  of  the  CMP.  That  makes  our  presence  here,  where  so  many  other  major  world  figures  have  stood,  even  more  special.        Other  venues:  We  will  also  conduct  some  programming  at  the  North  Lawn  Building,  in  the  “ECOSOC  Chamber,”  the  Church  Center  of  the  United  Nations  (CCUN),  the  Church  of  the  Holy  Family  (which  facilitated  the  visit  by  a  Pope  to  the  UN  as  well  as  the  recent  “Convocation  on  the  Rights  of  the  Child”  in  2012,  among  many  other  UN  related  events)  and  Sentry  Center,  a  venue  of  choice  for  many  UN  Mission  meetings  with  the  Secretary  General.    CCUN  and  Holy  Family  Church   are  nearby,   just   off   1st  Avenue,   on  44th   and  47th   Street,   respectively.         Sentry  Center  is  on  the  17th-­‐27th  floors  of  730  3rd  Avenue,  between  45th  and  46th  streets.    Please  ask  our  excellent,  youth  intern  staff  for  any  directions  and  thank  you  in  advance  for  your  understanding.

JOIN A CAMPAIGN IN 2012-13!

In the fall and winter of 2012–13, Friendship Ambassadors Foundation is conducting several volunteer and cultural exchange travel projects from campaigns created or highlighted at the 11th Youth Assembly at the UN. In 2012-13, you or your group can join in these trips, below:

• 1 Liter of Light Campaign in the Philippines and South East Asia: Help bring light to many. An

incredible journey for two weeks, meeting new people and discovering new cultures, while helping those in the developing world who need it most. (Proposed: Early 2013)

• Ecuador: Rebuilding the Indigenous Shuar Community of Central Ecuador. Assistance with sustainable development building, tourism development, and agriculture assistance to a grateful community in the Central Ecuadorian rainforest close to the Equator. Homestays available. (Dates throughout 2012-13)

• The Rhythms of One World: A Celebration for Peace through Music. International choirs come together to celebrate the signing of the UN Charter (Its birth, on June 26, 1945) and a fund raising tool for NGOs worldwide. At Lincoln Center and the United Nations. Volunteers sought. (May - June 2013, NYC)
