Recap: On discovering that Rosie’s gun is missinga bullet, James goes to the prop manager, Larry, whoalso happens to be an expert in guns. When asked,Larry spilled the beans that someone indeed had Jamesas a target. To James’ surprise, Larry, still joking, points the gun at him. The story continues to keep astop at the month-long suspense. Rahul’s submissionhas been selected from among several entries.(Previously written by John Remedios.)

Larry said with a dangerouslook on his face. "Every single day, we, the crew, have to put up with your arrogance, while youremain under the spotlight!"

He suddenly burst out with acrazy glint in his eyes, "What about us?"

Even before I could react to this verbalonslaught, a stinging slap landed on my face. Theimpact of this attack made me reel backwards. Ispun round and my eyes fell upon a walking sticklying underneath a chair. I stole a look at Larryto see if he had recovered from his maniacal fit.A gush of adrenaline rushed through me and Ijumped up to my feet without even thinking. ButLarry was quicker – he kicked the chair, makingit fly into the air and it landed as an obstructionbetween I and my only hope, the solitary walkingstick. Larry evidently was still possessed by

whatever devilish force had gripped him and hescreamed, “Not so fast, Jamesey". He soundedso evil that it made my blood congeal.

Larry picked up the stick in one swiftmovement while still pointing the gun at me. Isaid the Lord's name to myself softly. I knewmy moment was closer, I knew I would havebullets pumped into me very soon, battered withthe very weapon that could have helped me...being killed with the gun that was supposed tobe with me. I shut my eyes tight, readying myselffor the final flash of pain that would bring anend to everything. I wanted this nightmare to end,but did I want to die? I wanted to wake up fromthis horrid nightmare but reality pressed itselftoo cruelly against me, crushing me with itsvengeance.

I, therefore, could not believe that gentle, laughing voice with which Larry spoke next.Maybe it was another, more ruthless, form ofcruelty...or perhaps not. For he laughed outsaying, surprise ringing in his tone, "God inHeaven, James, you are scared!". I opened myeyes, knowing not what to expect. Larry washolding out his hand to me and that familiarharmless look of fun was in his eyes in place ofthat maniacal glint. I took his hand in confusednumbness. As I stumbled he exclaimed out as ifhe couldn't hold a long-kept secret anymore,"How did you like my acting?"

My confusion was perhaps adequatelycommunicated for he proceeded to explain, "Iwas just fooling you with my acting. Guess, I dida good job. Let's go now, enough of my jest.Your next shoot is in a few minutes." But I stilldidn't understand. "Why, Larry?", I whispered. He grinned sheepishly and grabbed me by myshoulder blade. He never answered my question.A loud explosion pierced the air and a sharp painsliced through my back, finding its place in mygut. My knees gave way and the hand I putaround my stomach stained red. As the agonyincreased, the world disintegrated into a hue ofillusions, a laughing Larry, guns, Rosie...And thenonly Larry came into focus as he said the lastwords I ever heard, "What is reality? How muchof it is acting?"
