Empire because they relied on mercenaries and their communication was poor.

6. Inflation
•Money is worth less (pay more for less)• Coins were worth their weight in gold• Over time, less gold was used in coins (worth less)• Reverted to a barter system• Eventually, people were only paid in food and clothing
7. Political Corruption
• No clear process for a successor (second in line for power)• Old emperor, senators, and bodyguards decided the next Emperor• Gradually, the bodyguards and armies picked the next Emperor• Eventually, Emperor’s throne went to the highest bidder
• In 100 years, 37 different Emperors• 25 assassinated
8. Rise in Christianity
•Many were pacifists• Opposed war/killing• Fewer soldiers
• Attracted qualified leaders who were no longer serving Rome•Money went to the Church, instead of government• In 330 CE, Christian Emperor Constantine moved the capital
to Byzantium
