Thank You!!

God Bless You For Your Generosity! Please remember the parish and

school in your will!

Thank you for helping Catholic Charities be the hands and feet of Christ. Your generous gifts to the 2017 Christmas Collection for Catholic Charities help Bring Hope to Life throughout Central Washington. If you missed the collection, there is still time to support the ministry. You may mail a gift to Catholic Charities, 5301 Tieton Drive, Suite C, Yakima, WA, 98908 or give online at www.catholiccharitiescw.org. Thank you for your generosity; Christ the King parish donated $41,897 on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. God bless you!

THANK YOU!

To all our food donors and collectors, can stackers, produce baggers, toiletries sorters, food boxers, envelope stampers, map printers, cart and wagon pullers, drivers and deliverers, gift donors, church attic gift haulers (you know who you are!), gift "shoppers" and packers, gift card counters and distributors. We, the many administrators of the Christmas Food Basket and Sharing Tree programs THANK YOU! Our donors and volunteers collected/donated over 13,000 cans, delivered 640 boxes of food and countless toiletries to 128 needy St. Vincent de Paul families, and donated $2,800 in grocery gift cards for fresh food for their holiday meal and over $14,000 in gift cards to their children. Recipients included the children living in Elijah Family Homes, 180 seniors, 136 foster kids, and 234 kids in Catholic Charities programs. You are amazingly generous and have brightened the Christmas of each recipient. We hope your Christmas was brightened too by the joy you brought to others.

Comings and Goings

Congratulations to those recently baptized: Cooper Eli Alford, Emma Marie Hudson, Charles Alexander McLain, Evelyn Clare Ramirez, Rudy Jude Shanley, Francisco Padilla-Smith, and Raul Padilla-Smith.

Happy 40th Wedding Anniversary to John and Priscilla Cadwell!!

From the Homily of Pope Benedict XVI for Epiphany, 2011

“On the Solemnity of Epiphany the Church continues to contemplate and to celebrate the mystery of the birth of Jesus the Saviour… the Son of God did not only come for the People of Israel… but also for the whole of humanity, represented by the Magi. And it is precisely on the Magi and their journey in search of the Messiah (cf. Mt 2:1-12) that the Church invites us to meditate and pray today.”

“…let us follow the journey of the Magi to Jerusalem… it was logical to seek the new king in the royal palace, where the wise court advisors were to be found. Yet, probably to their amazement… this newborn Child was not found in the places of power and culture...”

“They realized that power, even the power of knowledge, sometimes blocks the way to the encounter with this Child. The star then guided them to Bethle-hem, a little town; it led them among the poor and the humble to find the King of the world.”

“God’s criteria differ from human criteria. God does not manifest himself in the power of this world but... in quite a different way: in Bethlehem, where we encoun-ter the apparent powerlessness of his love. And it is there that we must go and there that we find God’s star.”

“The language of creation enables us to make good headway on the path towards God but does not give us the definitive light. In the end, it was indispensable for the Magi to listen to the voice of the Sacred Scriptures: they alone could show them the way. The true star is the word of God which, amidst of the uncertainty of hu-man discourses, gives us the immense splendour of the Divine Truth.”

“…let us allow ourselves to be guided by the star that is the word of God, let us follow it in our lives, walking with the Church in which the Word has pitched his tent. Our road will always be illumined by a light that no other sign can give us. And we too shall become stars for others, a reflection of that light which Christ caused to shine upon us.”

Christ the King School News

Preschool and soon-to-be Kindergarten parents, mark your calendars! On January 23, CK School will hold an Information Night for Preschoolers and incoming Kindergarteners. The Preschool session will begin at 6 p.m. in the Montessori room and will be followed by the Kindergarten session at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. I look forward to seeing you there! The overriding message we hear at Christmas is one of 'peace and goodwill' to one and all. On behalf of the entire CK school community, I thank you for helping support our students serve others through our very successful Canned Food Drive. In serving, our students learn the joy inherent in bringing goodwill to others. They also gain a sense of peace in knowing they have made a positive difference in the life of someone else. Our school faculty has been working diligently these past few months, studying various aspects of our school and completing the writing portion of our Self Study document, Improving Student Learning: A Self Study Process for Catholic Elementary Schools. All of our material is being gathered and recorded in an extensive document, Improving Student Learning, that will be the focal point for the visiting team in March, and our guide for the ongoing school improvement process following that visit. Please keep the CK school family in your prayers as we continue this journey. In Christ, Sheila LaSalle--Principal Crusaders for Academic Excellence and Social Justice

Carmelite Corner

Praying portions of the Divine Office

Give thanks to God the Father as you ponder Psalter and Gospel antiphons to celebrate the Epiphany of Christ.

• Seeing the star, the wise men said: This must signi-fy the birth of some great king. Let us search for him and lay our treasures at his feet: gold, frankin-cense and myrrh.

• He comes in splendor, the King who is our peace; he is supreme over all the kings of the earth.

• A light has shone through the darkness for the upright of heart; the Lord is gracious, merciful and just.

• Helpless, he lay in a manger; glorious, he shone in the heavens. Humbled, he lived among men; eter-nal, he dwelt with the Father.

• Let us dance with delight in the Lord and let our hearts be filled with rejoicing, for eternal salvation has appeared on the earth, alleluia.

• Three mysteries mark this holy day: today the star leads the Magi to the infant Christ; today water is changed into wine for the wedding feast; today Christ wills to be baptized by John in the river Jordan to bring us salvation.

Spiritual Practices

Ignatian Spirituality

Ignatian spirituality encourages us to ask the question: what more does God want of me? Through the Exercis-es, we can explore God in creation, develop various prayer methods, and learn the rules for discernment. These all work together to help us discover the deeper question: What does God want of me now? God calls, and hopefully, we answer. The Exercises show us how to listen to that call, and discern how to proceed.

For those who are participating in the Spiritual Exercises this year, our next group meeting will be Saturday, January 13 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The theme will be the Two Standards. To learn more about SEEL please visit http://spiritual-exercises.com. Alums are always welcome.

Eucharistic Devotion

Pope Francis on Twitter

“Let us nurture the seeds of peace as they grow and let us transform our cities into workshops of peace .” January 1, 2018

Evening prayers for peace are said in the chapel on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. Prayers from the breviary are led by members of the Social Justice and Peace Com-mittee. In a world rampant with violence, Pope Francis calls us to follow the nonviolent way of Jesus. Can you spare a half-hour before dinner?

Ultreya: Monday, Jan. 8. Rosary at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel, and Ultreya at 7:00 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. All are welcome to come and renew friendships and acquaintances at the start of the new year.
