Sunday Reflection More Announcements

"All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him." Psalm 72:11

The Jewish people of Jesus's time had long awaited the promised Messiah, their King and Redeemer. But when Christ came, He revealed Himself not just to the Jews, but to all people. Today's readings celebrate the mo-ment He was made manifest to the Gentile world, by recounting the story of wise men who came from afar to worship Jesus. The magi were diligently seeking God, and by reading the signs in the heavens and following the Star of Bethlehem, they found the baby Jesus. They came to worship Him, "bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord," fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah.

For those of us of non-Jewish backgrounds, this repre-sents the moment we were invited to the family of God. What a gift and a time to celebrate! In the very begin-ning of Jesus's time on earth, we are called to be adopt-ed children of God, to know Him and follow Him.

When Jesus left the earth, His mission completed, His final command to the apostles was to take the Good News to all nations. He wanted every nation and every person on earth to hear the Good News of salvation. Yet, over 2000 years later, there are many who still re-ject the invitation of a loving Father to become children of God.

In our own nation, we have had the luxury of living in a world permeated by Christian values, our actions and lives informed by faith in Father who loves us, and a King who gave His life for us. But many people have come to believe that our world would be the same with-out Christ. It seems a hardening of heart has come over the world as it once came over Herod, causing many to reject the King who came to save us.

Now is the time for each of us, as disciples of Christ, to urgently continue the mission to speak and live the truth of the Gospel, to hold the light of God high, so that all the nations in this dark world would open their eyes and hearts to behold the shining radiance of our God and King.

Spiritual Practices

Eucharistic Devotion

Franciscan Spirituality

Third Order Secular Franciscans live everyday lives in the world, but strive to live the Gospel according to the example of St. Francis. For more information, contact Bob Fitzsimmons OFS at [email protected] or 509-521-9387.

Evening prayers for peace are said in the chapel on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. Prayers from the breviary are led by members of the Social Justice and Peace Com-mittee. In a world rampant with violence, Pope Francis calls us to follow the nonviolent way of Jesus. Can you spare a half-hour before dinner?

Ignatian Spirituality

Ignatian spirituality encourages us to ask the question: what more does God want of me? Through the Exercis-es, we can explore God in creation, develop various prayer methods, learn the rules for discernment, but these all work together to help us discover the deeper question: What does God want of me now? God calls, and hopefully, we answer. The Exercises show us how to listen to that call, and discern how to proceed.

For those who are participating in the Spiritual Exercis-es this year, our next meeting will be Monday Jan. 28, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit Activity Center, Kennewick. Alums are always welcome. To learn more, visit www.spiritual-exercises.com or call Ellen at 628-8626.

Comings and Goings

Carmelite Corner

Praying portions of the Divine Office and Eucharistic Prayer Prefaces (2 of 3)

Give thanks to God the Father as you ponder Psalter and Gospel antiphons to celebrate the Epiphany of Christ.

• Seeing the star, the wise men said: This must signi-fy the birth of some great king. Let us search for him and lay our treasures at his feet: gold, frankin-cense and myrrh.

• He comes in splendor, the King who is our peace; he is supreme over all the kings of the earth.

• A light has shone through the darkness for the up-right of heart; the Lord is gracious, merciful and just.

• Helpless, he lay in a manger; glorious, he shone in the heavens. Humbled, he lived among men; eter-nal, he dwelt with the Father.

• Let us dance with delight in the Lord and let our hearts be filled with rejoicing, for eternal salvation has appeared on the earth, alleluia.

• Three mysteries mark this holy day: today the star leads the Magi to the infant Christ; today water is changed into wine for the wedding feast; today Christ wills to be baptized by John in the river Jor-dan to bring us salvation.

Reflect on the following portion of the Preface for Epiph-any which is prayed at the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer:

For today you have revealed the mystery of our salva-tion in Christ as a light for the nations, and, when he appeared in our mortal nature, you made us new by the glory of his immortal nature.
