    *LITANY Betsy Sams

One: We worship the God of Jonah and the prophets. All: God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and ready to forgive. One: When life has closed in around us, when we are lost in the depths, when hope is ebbing away, remember

our God, creator of the seas, sky, and dry land. All: We call to the LORD when we are lost. One: God hears our voice, calls us back to faithfulness; and awaits our return. Let us pray...

  • *UNISON PRAYER OF INVOCATION

God of heaven, maker of land and sea, your love is relentless and there is nowhere we can go from your Spirit. Give us compassion, we pray, for those who can't sense your presence, and whose lives are marked by grief or loss; give us grace to love those who are different from us, those who might even oppose us; and give us courage and strength to follow your call wherever it leads. Amen

    ATTENDING TO GOD'S WORD

    ANTIPHONAL READING FROM THE PSALTER

    Psalm 139:1-12 CARLTON R. YOUNG

    Cantor

O LORD, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night," even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.

    Cantor

    READING FROM THE SCRIPTURES

One: The stories of our faith enlighten our world today. All: We listen for a word from God.

Jonah 1:1-3 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, 'Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.' But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD...

Jonah 3:1-10 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 'Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.' So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, 'Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!' And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: 'By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish.' When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

  • RESPONSE

One: Jonah, the sailors, and the Ninevites all show us the radical mercy of God. All: They challenge us to widen the boundaries of our love.

    ANTHEM "Jonah" Rollo Dilworth

    The Community Quartet

This is the story about Jonah, whose circumstances made for quite a tale. He was a man who had a great adventure, while caught up in the belly of a whale!

Jonah in the belly. Jonah in the belly of a whale. Jonah was a runnin' from the call of the Lord. So he finds a ship that's sailin' and he makes his way on board.

But soon and very soon, the tempests come. The call of the Lord, he was hidin' from, and a mighty whale was awaitin' by.

The crew said, "We must all do somethin' fast before this boat sinks." So they all drew lots and found out that old Jonah was the jinks.

Poor Jonah then confessed: "I know it's me." The crew of the ship threw him in the sea, and a mighty whale was awaitin' by.

Jonah! Jonah! And he was swallowed up by the whale, and given some time to think things over. Swallowed up by the whale, and given some time to pray.

He spent three days, three nights, then the whale set Jonah free! Jonah, in the belly of a whale! Jonah!

    MISSION-SERVING THE COMMUNITY

CHRISTMAS WISH TREE: For years, Community Church has played Santa for children all over Indian River County, by taking tags from the Wish Tree and purchasing a gift. It is true that COVID has made life more complicated, but not even COVID can steal the Christmas Wish Tree from the 350+ children who will be recipients of our gift giving this year! Our tree will be a virtual one but the Agencies we partner with are real. We will be gifting children from Daisie Bridgewater, Indian River County Healthy Start, Childcare Resources, Feed the Lambs, ESOL/Migrant Students, Guardians for New Futures, and the Homeless Middle School program.

For information about how you can be a Santa, even if you are still up north (at the North Pole?), please go to ccovbwishtree.org to take a name (or two) from our virtual tree. There will be instructions there for how to proceed. Gifts are due back to the Church by December 6th. Thank you for helping bring joy to a child in this challenging year.

We invite you to bring your non-perishable items to 2206 16th Ave. on this day.

HARVEST SUNDAY: We invite you to bring fresh, seasonal vegetables and fruit to Church on Sunday, November 22nd.
