*CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively)
O Great Spirit, whose breath gives life to the world
and whose voice is heard in the soft breeze.
We need your strength and wisdom.
Cause us to walk in beauty.
Give us eyes ever to behold the red and purple sunset.
Make us wise so that we may understand
what you have taught us.
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh upon us!
Empower us to be the very hands of Christ,
as we strive to be the Church you call us to be!

*OPENING PRAYER (In Unison)
We come today to celebrate the Laity of the Church. We are all called
to be in mission, as we spread the Good News of Jesus Christ in the
world! Let us not be concerned with what we perceive as our
limitations and put our fears to rest. God has given each one of us
special gifts! May we always strive to make God known to those
around us each day, even in the small things we do. May God
continue to amaze us each and every day! Amen.
GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 28:16-20 (NRSV)
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which
Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him;
but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey
3
everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you
always, to the end of the age.”
The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

Stewardship Journey-Renewing Our Covenant
As we embark on our stewardship journey during October and
November, it is my prayer that we renew the covenant that we
pledged and the vows that we made when joining the United
Methodist Church, “that we will faithfully participate in the ministries of
the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our
witness.”
The “Covenant Moment” this week focuses on service. From “A
Disciple’s Path,” the fall study, “we are commissioned to use our gifts to
continue the servant ministry of Jesus.” Each of us has a role in serving.
We have been gifted by God, and we are needed in the ministry of our
church. How has God gifted you? How are you called to serve?
Please join me as we renew our covenant together with our prayers,
our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness.
Ann Gordon Evans
Stewardship Chairman
The Red Room will be open during our Candy
Cane Bazaar on November 17. We need some
Christmas items to sell. So, as you are getting out
your seasonal decorations in the coming weeks,
please consider donating items you no longer
need or want. A small insignificant item to you
may be just the item someone else is looking for!
Thanks so much for all the donations so far!!
Contact Brad Allsbrook with any questions!

Saturday, October 6, was a great day for our church. The United
Methodist Men had a successful Brunswick Stew sale and several
of our United Methodist Women went to Gloucester to attend the
District UMW meeting. We were there to support and encourage
Sylvia Rumsey as she was installed as the York River District United
Methodist Women’s President for 2019! Congratulations Sylvia!
Please join us in praying for her success as she continues to serve
her congregations as well as the district!

Communicating in tough times
As Hurricane Michael was devastating Florida’s Panhandle, a colleague received an
obviously prescheduled email promoting a last-minute Panama City Beach vacation
deal. Whether it’s a natural disaster, political crisis or other tragedy, communications
matter before, during and after the event. An ill-considered or ill-timed response could
not only be dangerous, but also costly in terms of reputation.
Review all automatic and scheduled posts on the horizon. Moments of tragedy
change your audience’s perspective on your posts. Whether it’s posting a devotional
about Noah after a flooding event or sharing The United Methodist Church’s stance
on science after a politician demeans scientists, when you say things can be as
important as what you are saying. Whether you’re scheduling social media updates
in advance via Hootsuite or using another service like Buffer, looking through what’s
scheduled to post is important. Take a moment to read over the upcoming posts
through the lens of what’s happened in the news. Some posts may merely need a
new title while others are best rescheduled.
Post a prayer, using imagery. Whatever has happened, our first response as people of
faith should be to pray. Posting a prayer from a church account will remind people
that we can reach out to God at any time. A picture is worth a 1,000 words. Using an
image (a candle, praying hands) with a call to prayer using Adobe Spark or other
apps helps bring the right attention and reverence to your post. Look for prayers for
difficult times in the Book of Worship.
Offer a tangible response. Once the tragedy has had a little time to breathe, it’s time
to move your people to practical action. For that, foster connections you have within
your community to be involved in the solution. Of course, the specific response
depends on the tragedy, but The United Methodist Church has many groups that will
already be on the ground helping. In the case of natural disaster, the United Methodist
Committee on Relief is a trusted relief organization, with 100% donations funneled
directly to the affected areas.
Plan a relevant message for your next worship service/ This is quite possibly the most
delicate of all the communication options we’ve discussed so far. Each person walks
into your church with a slightly different perspective, fueled perhaps by varying news
consumption. What you say will be heard through many filters, but it’s important that
these things are addressed. In the age of social media, anything said from the pulpit
11
can be immediately shared with the world. With that in mind, take a moment to
process your response in worship.
Overall Orientation: Be knowledgeable about what has happened and consider what
your community needs most. Are they grieving and need someone to mourn with
them? Are they angry and need help channeling that into advocacy/action?
