Dan SiegertPeosta, Iowa; Dubuque County240 registered Brown Swiss How did you get into dairy farming? I am the third generation dairy farmer in my family What is your favorite technology? My cell phone. You save a lot of time in the day when you can make or receive important calls by just reaching into your pocket. What is your plan for your dairy in the next ve years? To improve the genetic base of the herd. What has been the best decision youve ever made on your farm? Switching from Holsteins to Brown Swiss 30 years ago. Looking back, if you could change one thing that you did on your farm, what would it be and why? We milked three times a day for about ve years, a few years ago. Now we milk twice a day. Switching has reduced the stress of trying to nd employees to milk. What is your favorite job to do on the farm? Milking the cows. What is your favorite dairy product? Strawberry milk.Tell us about a skill you possess that makes dairy farming easier for you. Patience with working with people. You have to be able to listen and understand without having a short fuse. What do you like to do in your spare time? Going to Milwaukee Brewers baseball games. I like to go out of town with my wife, Trish, and kids. If you could have a celebrity help you with chores for a day who would it be and why? Ashton Kutcher. Since he is an Iowa Hawkeye fan, I am sure he would be easy to get along with. Also, he could probably give me a few pointers on some pranks I could use on the family.

Dairy program sign-up deadline extended
Turn to AG INSIDER | Page 7
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has announced an extension in the sign-up deadline for the Margin Protection Program. Farmers now have until Dec. 5 to enroll. USDA also extended the comment period for both the Margin Protection Program and the Dairy Product Donation Program until Dec. 15. MPP promoted at NMPF annual meeting It was a celebratory mood for dairy farmers when the National Milk Producers Federation, National Dairy Board and United Dairy Industry Association met in Texas for their joint-annual meeting. Record milk prices and low feed costs have supported the bottom-line, but those good times wont last. National Milk spokesman Chris Galen is reminding dairy farmers to consider the new Margin Protection Program. The Margin Protection Program in the new farm bill is the best protection dairy farmers have against the hard times. Signaling support for animal care The national dairy industrys animal care program, called Farmers Assuring Responsible Management, has strong participation. Dairy processors handling 75 percent of the U.S. milk supply have enlisted in this program. Most processors have enrolled in FARM, but not all of the members of those cooperatives are required to participate. Weve made an adjustment in the animal care program that if youre going to say, as a company, that you endorse this program, it must apply across all of your membership. The National Milk Producers Federation board has also updated its rules for the animal care program, outlining guidelines for suspension if a farm is being investigated for the mistreatment of animals.Dairy FARM report released The National Milk Producers Federation has issued its annual report on the National Dairy FARM Program. In this case, FARM stands for Farmers Assuring Responsible Management, which is the industrys standards for animal care. According to the report, 99 percent of the farms in the program monitor their animals daily to identify health issues. Ninety-three percent of those surveyed have protocols in place with veterinarians to deal with
common diseases, calving and specialneeds animals. The report found 84 percent of farms in the program have a valid veterinarian-client relationship, which was seen as an area that needsimprovement. BSE surveillance program updated USDAs Animal and Plant HealthInspection Service Veterinary Serviceshas updated its BSE surveillance program. APHIS will no longer collectsamples from calves less than 12 months of age since the disease hasnever been found in calves less than ayear of age. Previously, cattle of any age showing signs of central nervoussystem disorders were tested. Rebuilding uid milk consumption Seven businesses are workingtogether to increase milk and milk-based beverage consumption worldwide.Dairy Management, Inc. CEO, TomGallagher, says the businesses are committing an investment to put milkback in the center of the growinghealth and wellness beverage market. These companies are willing to invest, over the next several years, in excessof $500 million. That covers mostlyinfrastructure, plant development, marketing activities and otherwise. The seven partners are Dairy Farmersof America; Darigold/Northwest DairyAssociation; The Kroger Company; Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association, Inc.; Shamrock Farms; Southeast Milk, Inc.and The Coca-Cola Company.
