SECTION 11 66 00

PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 SUMMARY A. The work included in this Section comprises the performance requirements for materials and

1.03 REFERENCES A. Product manufacture, testing and installation shall comply with the following references,

unless otherwise specified or unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. 1. ASTM1487-01 - Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground

Equipment for Public Use.

B. All items of playground equipment are to be tested and certified standard compliant by TUV

testing institute.

C. Materials that have not been individually specified in this document will be of international standard. Any differences between their requirements and this specification shall be submitted by the Contractor.

1.04 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS A. Product manufacturer, testing and installation shall comply with the following requirements,

unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. 1. Play Equipment shall conform to the locations and levels on the drawings unless

otherwise approved by the Engineer.

2. All materials for use in construction shall be obtained only from sources approved by the Engineer.

3. The specific source of materials shall not be changed without prior written approval of the Engineer.

4. If the grading and quality of material delivered to the site does not conform to the grading and quality as previously inspected and tested or does not comply with the specifications, the Engineer may reject such material at the site of the work.

5. Sufficient materials must be stored in stockpiles to allow for testing and approval of such materials prior to use in works.

1.05 SUBMITTALS A. Product Approval

1. The Contractor shall submit sufficient information to the Engineer, prior to purchase,

according to Section 013000, in order to verify compliance with the plans and specifications. Such information shall include at least the following, unless otherwise required by the Engineer. a. Manufacturer’s name.

b. Suppliers name.

c. Product name (if applicable).

d. Product description.

e. Manufacturer’s technical data.

f. Storage instructions.

g. Relevant test results of all materials specified.

h. Application or installation instructions.

i. Operation and Maintenance instructions.

B. Samples

1. Samples (applied) shall be supplied for at least the following products or as requested by the Engineer. a. Playground Equipment.

b. 200mm length of typical structural members (post) from each source.

c. 200mm length, 200mm width panels from each source.

i. 1 No. sample of primary connector from each source. ii. 1 No. sample of ropes and cables from each source. iii. 1 No. sample of fittings and fixtures from each source

2. All sampling shall be witnessed by the Engineer, unless agreed otherwise.

C. Method Statement

1. The Contractor shall provide separate method statements meeting the requirements of

Section 01400, for at least the following activities or as requested by the Engineer.

a. Site clearing and earthwork (if necessary).

b. Installation of foundation

c. Installation of play equipment items.

d. Installation of safety surface.

D. Shop Drawings

1. The Contractor shall submit shop drawings according to Section 01300 for at least the

following items. a. Playground Equipment.

E. Mock-up

1. The Contractor shall prepare a mock-up meeting the requirements of Section 01400 for

at least the following installations or as requested by the Engineer. a. Playground Equipment.

b. Provide mockup of layout where directed by the Engineer.

c. 1 No. mock-up per item specified (site furniture to be fixed as per final arrangement).

d. Show range of shades, color, texture and line marking.

e. Accepted mockup may become part of the work. 1.06 QUALITY CONTROL A. Prior to dispatch from the factory, the Contractor shall notify the Engineer, in sufficient time

to allow the Engineer or his representatives to inspect and test the products, if so desired. 1. All notifications shall be made by written “Inspection Requests” in accordance with

Section 01400. a. An advance copy may be faxed to the Engineers office, but the original must arrive

before the scheduled day of inspection.

2. Minimum notification times shall be as follows:

a. 24 hours on site.

b. 48 hours within Riyadh and surrounding area.

c. 72 hours for other areas within the KSA

d. 2 weeks outside of the KSA B. “Inspection Requests” shall be submitted to the Engineer during the on site installation work

prior to proceeding with at least the following activities. Minimum notification time shall be 24 hours. They shall include but not be limited to;

1. Start of excavation for foundation.

2. Start of installation of playground equipment.

3. Start of installation of associate surface finishes safety surface.

4. Sampling and testing.

C. Testing Laboratory

1. Testing of all materials shall be carried out by a suitably equipped site laboratory or in an independent laboratory as described in Section 01400 and approved by the Engineer.

a. Routine materials testing and site testing shall always be conducted in the site

laboratory, unless otherwise agreed by the Engineer.

b. All sampling shall be witnessed by the Engineer, unless otherwise directed by the Engineer.

2. During the course of the work, all required tests shall be carried out under the supervision of the Engineer, to ascertain the suitability of materials according to this specification.

3. The Contractor shall maintain a daily log of all tests carried out for the Engineer’s review.

D. Manufacturer Qualifications:

1. Minimum 15 years experience in the manufacture of playground equipment.

2. Provide reference list of at least ten major transportation authorities, municipalities,

universities, or other high-use public environments currently using site furniture fabricated by the manufacturer.

E. The contractor shall record the batch number of each product used on the site and maintain it through the warranty period.

F. The contractor shall provide the inspector, upon request, an estimate of the volume of each product to be used on the site.

1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Delivery, storage and handling shall be according to the manufacturer’s recommendations

along with the following provisions: 1. Transportation, handling and storage shall at all times be performed in a manner to

avoid product damage.

2. Only nylon slings shall be allowed for lifting products. Steel chains, clamps or cables shall not be allowed for lifting purposes, unless approved by the Engineer. a. Steel chains or cables may be allowed for securing products during transport or

storage provided protective padding or timber blocking is utilized.

3. Do not store products directly on ground, unless approved by the Engineer.

a. Ensure adequate timber blocking is utilized to provide sufficient support.

4. Where product manufacturer recommends storage under controlled temperatures, the Contractor must provide an enclosed, insulated, cool store maintained at the proper temperature 24 hours a day.

5. If stored outside, cover products to prevent UV degradation as recommended by the manufacturer.

6. The Contractor shall visually inspect all products upon delivery and report any damage to the Engineer. a. Any products damaged during delivery, storage or installation shall be marked by

the Contractor and set aside. B. Delivery

1. Deliver materials and products in factory labeled packages indicating name, brand,

type, size, color, production date and expiry date where applicable.

2. Sequence deliveries to avoid project delays and to permit proper co-ordination of the work.

C. Storage

1. Store materials in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

2. Deliver product to the site in original unopened containers with proper labels attached. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 GENERAL A. All products supplied to be used with the contract area shall meet current (ISO) international

standards for design and manufacturing. These shall be suitable for use in extreme climatic conditions with UV protection and other surface protection to international standards. All items will be reviewed and approved on a case by case basis.

B. The finish and color of all products shall match the drawings as directed by the Engineer.

2.02 PLAY EQUIPMENT COMPONENTS (TYPICAL) A. Components: The play equipment shall consist of the following, but shall not be limited to.

1. Posts and Upright Supports. Posts and upright supports shall be steel as required by the

particular item of equipment specified. Wooden posts are not acceptable.

2. Post Caps. Post caps shall be either plastic or aluminum, as recommended by the manufactures for the specified item of equipment.

3. Footings. For wooden posts, the ground anchorage connection shall be made using hot dipped galvanized steel plate footings as recommended by the manufacturer, and as approved by the Engineer. Metal post footings shall extend below the finished grade according to the manufacturer’s recommendations for each individual unit and as

approved by the Engineer.

4. Beams. Beam elements shall be steel as required by the particular item of equipment specified. Wooden beams are not acceptable.

5. Walls. Wall panels shall be manufactured from molded plastic derivative/polymer.

6. Roof. Roof structures for play equipment shall be manufactured from either metal sheeting or molded plastic derivative/polymer.

7. Floors. Floors shall be constructed from molded plastic derivative/polymer or metal decking with a protective coating to prevent excessive heat gain as required by the particular item of equipment specified.

8. Bridges. Bridges shall be made of molded plastic derivative/polymer, metal with a protective coating to prevent excessive heat gain, and/or rope as required by the manufacturer of that specific item.

9. Stairs. Stairs shall be made of molded plastic derivative/polymer, or metal decking with a protective coating to prevent excessive heat gain as required by the particular items of equipment specified.

10. Rope Ladders, Horizontal Bars and Sliding Poles. Climbing ropes and rope ladders shall be fixed to timber or steel beams by the use of plastic protectors. Rope ladders, horizontal bars, support brackets and sliding poles shall be effectively protected against corrosion and wear. The steel rungs on rope ladders shall be attached to the steel-reinforced rope with aluminum fixings.

11. Slides. The sliding surface shall be plastic as per the requirements of the specified item of equipment. Slides shall be orientated towards the north to avoid overheating from solar radiation.

12. Tunnels. Tunnels shall be manufactured from polypropylene or impact resistant polycarbonate or steel tubing.

13. Springs. Springs shall be made of steel, and shall be subject to shot peening to prevent crack formation and fatigue failure.

14. Swings. Swing seats shall be manufactured from shock absorbing materials. Fitting and chains shall be as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

15. All holes shall be pre-drilled to make assembly fast and easy, and insure a quality installation.

2.03 PLAY EQUIPMENT MATERIALS (TYPICAL) A. Materials: All materials shall be structurally sound and shall comply with the relevant safety

standards. Equipment longevity shall be ensured by adopting recommended corrosion protection systems for metals and appropriate treatment for wooden elements. The materials for the play and exercise equipment components shall comply with the following general requirements.

1. Wood. Wood components are not acceptable for the play equipment.

2. Metal. All metal components shall be brass, stainless steel, anodized aluminum, hot dipped galvanized or electric galvanized powder coated steel.

3. Plastic. All plastic based components in the architectural and landscaping works shall be suitable and appropriate for the local climatic conditions.

a. The physical and mechanical properties, along with the durability and stability, of the plastics shall not show signs of distress, degradation, change of shape, degradability, stress or stain when exposed to the local environmental conditions. The plastic shall have a high UV-resistant rating and product warranty that the plastic elements do not fade in colour within 10 years of fixing.

b. For proprietary items, the Contractor and/or manufacturer/supplier shall provide all the necessary information to the Engineer regarding the properties of any plastic components. For any items or members, the Engineer may request the Contractor to undertake in-house or independent testing to verify the properties and quality. Any such testing shall be at the Contractor’s expense.

c. The Contractor or manufacturer/supplier shall provide testing certificates, project references, and examples of existing similar items in service, as required by the Engineer.

d. Screws, nuts, washers, bolts, and other hardware shall be of austenitic stainless steel, or galvanized steel, or as directed by the approved manufacturer or supplier.

e. Final approval of the component will be based on the Engineer’s satisfaction that the materials proposed are reputable, structurally sound and that all materials are of a high quality suitable for the local environment.

4. Nets and Ropes. All ropes shall be pre- stretched and steel reinforced, with an ultimate tensile strength not less than 2200 kg. The minimum diameter of the rope shall be 12mm.

Nets shall be made of 16mm diameter rope, assembled with stainless steel couplers. All rope ends shall be looped with aluminum couplers.

5. Hardware. All hardware shall be either stainless steel, cast aluminum, anodized aluminum, hot-dip galvanized, or electric galvanized, and powder coated steel and tamper proof.

6. Rubber. Rubber elements shall be made from vulcanized UV resistant rubber, with the addition of fire retardant and weather proofing material.

2.04 PLAY EQUIPMENT A. Specific Play Equipment for all playgrounds shall be as identified in the plans and details.

B. Play Equipment and playgrounds are developed based on the ages of the intended users.

Playgrounds shall include different combinations of equipment within any one project site. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 GENERAL A. All operations shall be performed in accordance with the specification, and in conformity

with the lines, grades, thickness and typical cross Section shown on the plans or established by the Engineer. Only approved material shall be used in the construction. The embankment and subgrade in fill shall be constructed utilizing only suitable material obtained from

roadway excavation or imported fill material from sources previously approved by the competent authority.

3.02 SITE PREPARATION AND CLEARING A. Site preparation and clearing shall comply with Section 02200, unless otherwise approved by

the Engineer.

B. Verify that substrates are stable and capable of supporting the weight of items covered under this section.

C. Verify that substrates have been adequately prepared to securely anchor those items that will be surface mounted.

3.03 INSTALLATION A. Install according to the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

B. Install in conformance to applicable ADA guidelines and End User’s established Accessibility policies.

3.04 PROTECTION A. Erect temporary barriers to protect site furniture during drying and curing.

B. Lock site to prevent use until acceptance by the owner’s representative.

3.05 CLEAN UP A. Remove all containers, surplus materials and debris. Dispose of materials in accordance with

local, state and Federal regulations.

B. Leave site in a clean and orderly condition.
