HOME MISSIONS, BLACK AND NATIVE
AMERICAN, MILITARY ARCHDIOCESE
COLLECTIONS
Next week’s special collection supports three important national Catholic missions. The Military Archdiocese collection provides for Catholic chaplains throughout the world for American servicemen and servicewomen. The Home Missions collection subsidizes the evangelization and formation activities of mission dioceses. The Black and Native American collection strengthens evangelization and outreach programs which would otherwise be in danger of disappearing among the Black, American Indian, Eskimo, and Aleut communities of the United States. For more information, please visit www.usccs.org/hm or www.milarch.org.

SACRED HAPPENINGS
On March 29, at a Friday morning coffee hour, parishioners bid farewell to Paul DeMeo, longtime host of the Friday coffee hour—first at St. Philip Neri and more recently at Sacred Heart. Paul is moving to Weymouth to be closer to his son. A lovely tribute was voiced by Kathie Long who reminded us that “It is hard to think of a person who has been a more dedicated, loyal and involved Catholic as lector, Eucharistic minister, altar server and social director. ...may your new home be warm with love, friends and family.”
Parishioners were also saddened at the loss of Beverly Harris whose funeral was celebrated on April 1 and Bill Gleason whose funeral was celebrated on April 7. Although we will miss their presence among us, we trust that they are now at peace with the Lord.
On a happy note, we celebrated the Baptism of Bryson Thomas Prokop on Sunday, April 12 at the 9:00am Mass here at Sacred Heart. We congratulate parents Melissa and Harold and promise to provide a community of support as they raise Bryson in the Catholic faith.
At Our Lady Help of Christians Church on Sunday, April 12, the baptism of Jayden and Xavier Reyes, great grandchildren of Sacred Heart parishioners Mary & Bob English, was celebrated. Congratulations to all!
FREE SCREENING OF MOVIE LITTLE BOY
Two very generous benefactors bought out the AMC Burlington theatre (ten screens) for a LITTLE BOY premiere event on Thursday April 23rd. This is a wonderful free and enriching opportunity for those in the Archdiocese of Boston to experience a wonderful film set for release on April 24. Doors open at 6:15pm at AMC Burlington Cinema 10, 20 South Avenue, Burlington, MA. The tickets are free and first come first serve (but we want to target those who will commit so we don't have an empty theatre). Interested individuals RSVP to http://w w w . m o t i v e i n s i d e r . c o m / r s v p / e v i t e . p h p ?id=155&par=599. FYI The Globe is going to do a little story on the generosity of one of the benefactors and the intersection of business and culture.
BOSTON RED SOX CATHOLIC NIGHT
Are you interested in attending a Red Sox game with other parishioners on Wednesday, July 29? The game time is 7:10pm. This is the Archdiocese of Boston Night and we have the opportunity to purchase tickets at a group rate of $30 for Bleacher or $55 for Grandstand seats. We need to guarantee a certain number and purchase the block of tickets in advance. Last year we learned of this event too late to join in for this fun evening. Don’t let this opportunity for fellowship and camaraderie pass us by this year! Please call the rectory and let us know how many tickets (and at which level) you would like to purchase. If we don’t make our 20 seat minimum, we can perhaps join with another parish if there is sufficient interest. Call soon!

THE REST OF THE STORY
We have all heard the story before. Two disciples walked to a small town, called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were sorrowful—I suppose in the same way people tended to be when Elvis died. But this was serious. The disciples’ hero was dead, the man they had thought was the messiah. Then, suddenly, they were joined by a stranger. He began explaining to them the story of Christ as foretold in the Jewish scriptures. When the three of them arrived at Emmaus, they ate, and the men knew in a flash, as he broke the bread, just who he was. Then suddenly he disappeared. Mysterious. These same men ran to Jerusalem as fast as they could, to tell the eleven apostles about this extraordinary revelation. Sunday’s Gospel tells this part of the story. Surely they were babbling and prattling, being so excited, but in the midst of this excitement, suddenly, without warning, Jesus
appeared again. “They were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost.” Jesus replied that ghosts do not have flesh and bones, do they? Touch me and know I am real. He showed them his hands and feet, with the wounds of the cross now made beautiful by God’s love. Then comes Jesus’ best move, a compassionate one. He says he is hungry. How much more un-ghostly could you get? He helps himself to the baked fish they bring him, just as he had done so often in their life together. He begins to explain the events which to them had seemed like pure disaster: the passion and death and burial in particular. He recalls everything written about him “in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms,” just as he had done for the two men on the road to Emmaus. He tells why the Son of Man had to suffer, die, and be then be raised. What were his words? Surely he referenced Job, who had been a loving and moral man, but had lost absolutely everything, which led to a direct encounter with God (maybe a prefiguring of the crucifixion). And of course, the Book of Isaiah must have been part of it: It was our infirmities that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins, Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed (Isaiah 53:4-5). This passage is the heart and soul of the Hebrew scriptures, and, according to our Christian and Catholic belief, the fulfillment that was Jesus. What about the resurrection? Here is Isaiah again, words had been written centuries before Jesus: Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; Through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear. Therefore I will give him his portion among the
great, and he shall divide the spoils with the
mighty (Isaiah 53:11-12 italics added). The apostles converted. Peter went off to preach what God “had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer” (First Reading), and that he would die and be glorified. This is the “rest of the story” of Emmaus. And since Easter, the rest of our own story.
