PROMISES

Today's liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God's will makes us "family" with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil.

Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe--really believe--that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise ourselves to combat evil and sin by acting as sisters and brothers not only to the Lord, but to

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS

OF THE EUCHARIST

Our Church is in great need of your compassion, prayers and time to share God’s love and serve our neighbor. Saint Martin of Tours’ Homebound Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist serve in a very special and loving way by bringing Holy Communion (Body of Christ) prayers and time to those who are sick, too infirmed or hospitalized to attend Holy Mass. Volunteering your time is one of the most rewarding ways for doing God’s work. Join us and help us bring comfort and the healing power of Christ in the Eucharist to the homebound and sick. Training and guidance are provided. For more information contact Deacon Al at: [email protected] or 619.465.5334

JULY 14, 2018 8:30am - 3:30pm IS GOD CALLING YOU TO BECOME A PRIEST? Explorer Day provides men an opportunity to learn more about the priesthood and how to discern God’s call.

EXPLORER DAY

ST. MARTIN OF TOURS ACADEMY June 10, 2018

June News! Before graduation, the students in the Academy 8th grade class completed an Ellis Island simulation. The students learned about 19th century immigration to the United States by millions of people from all over the world. We discussed the hardships of the process, then the students were given an identity [in many cases of a real immigrant] and had to go through the various intake stations to find out if they would be allowed into the country or deported. It was an eye opening experience for the students, and hopefully they learned something about their own family history and built some compassion and empathy for the plight of immigrants today. For the past 27 years, our second grade teacher, Toni Mazzara has hosted an annual family fishing picnic in June. Alums (and their parents) have fond memories of fishing at the lake! Passing down fishing tips from her dad, Ms. Mazzara would teach each child the skill to throw out the line and bait the hook. We invite parishioners, alumni and friends of SMA to come by! Look for the green & white canopy at Lake Murray on Sunday, June 24th from 10am-4pm. You are welcome to bring your fishing poles, chairs & bikes, lunch and drinks. Daily permits and bait are available at the snack bar. Adults need a fishing license and a permit. Children age 7 and under fish free and age 8 and over need a permit. Even if you don’t fish, come for the picnic. It is always a lot of fun! Another annual event is SMA’s Folklorico Mexican Dance Class performing in the La Mesa Flag Day Parade. For over 20 years, Dori Miller has instructed this after school class. Students have learned traditional Mexican dances and have performed them throughout San Diego. Thank you, Dori for making our students shine!
