There's a waiting list to get into this school because of its academic reputation and it's small size. There's a lot if parent involvementwhich gives it a private school feel without the additional cost. The students are motivated, the school grounds are safe and clean, and the students are challenged academically. The principalappears to be setting a great example, as I have seen her and her staff at several events (academic events, Speech and Debate, sporting events, etc.) It's clear that theentire school community (administration, counselors, students, teachers, coaches, staff, parents) all work closely and take pride in this educational environment. As aparent whose children have attended San Gabriel Unified schools since kindergarten, I can say that even though SGUSD may be small, it is mighty. And "Gab", as thepinnacle of their experience, is a great way to end this experience as they prepare for their futures. Gab is still one of the Best HS in the US (Silver) by US News andWorld report. Look closely, it is not that impressive knowing other HS in the region mostly ranked higher. Although itis unfair to compare with SM, Arcadia, SP, or TC, still Gabrielino comes behind SGH, Alhambra, Arroyo, Monterey Park with the same demographic characteristics,making GHS one of the lower ranking HS in the region. Also notice that a handful of Gabrielino graduates actually go on to descent colleges. I don t think the school isbad. The members that sit on the SGUSD school board just have to do a better job to ensure Gabrielino stays competitive and strong. There is not really anything in the school or classrooms that can negatively affect how the studentslearn. Some teachers are better than others, but most of them are pretty good at teaching and have a lot of patience. This school is extremely competitive, academicallyand in athletics. Being in a sport in this school will teach you many things and provide an unforgettable experience. Some say that for a high school, Gabrielino is tiny,but I see this as a positive attribute on Gabrielino. This allows students to bond and know people more easily and we get to feel more like a family, than just randompeople. This school is still kind of new and is constantly growing. What I'd really like to see added into this school is a swimming pool. Oh, and the food is important.Sure there are snacking stores available for students to buy at for lunch, but the lunch that they serve is not the greatest. Gabrielino recently changed their pizza, andafter trying it for myself and hearing it from a lot of people, it tastes like cardboard. Their best lunch, in my opinion, is the teriyaki bowl. Lot's of parent involvement! I see a lot of the same people volunteering, andI wish I could do more, but maybe it goes back to the 80-20 Rule. The PTA is ALWAYS asking for volunteers so it's not for a lack of trying. The PTA is huge at this schooland provides a lot of funds for programs, supplies and events. I don't know all of the Board Members personally, it seems like a pretty diverse crowd (age & race wise), butagain, it'd be nice to see some new faces and maybe a couple dads. Some of the parents seem to have a sense of entitlement; to the point of thinking they can requestcertain teachers. This is a public school - you get what you get and you don't get upset. It is interesting to note, that over the years I've seen at least 3 families pull theirkids out to go to private school and then come back a year or two later, proclaiming that private school wasn't all that they thought it would be. The principal, teachers, staff, and PTA impress me every day with their dedication to the students. There are so many engaged parents. Iwould highly recommend this school. I like having my children attend a school where I can feel so comfortable talking to the principal, teachers, and staff. The climate of the school has been warm, inviting, friendly, and you just got a sense that this was a great place tosend your kids to school. For the past few years the school seems to be changing, and I am afraid to say, it has been for the negative. Before I go on, I need to say thatthe community surrounding Coolidge is great. It has low crime, an educated population, good sports and extra curricular activities. Concerns: The transparency betweenthe administration and parents is getting blurry. The school is starting to go down the path of doing what s best for the administration/staff and not what s best for the kidsand the community. There is a growing concern, among current parents, about the conflict of interest, in the number of substitutes that are parents of current students,who are very active in the current PTA, even though they might be qualified to be a substitute. Positives: Coolidge has a great PTA who supports the school by fundinginstructors for PE, Art, and Music. The top 3 annual PTA functions for the kids are: the end of year talent show, spring festival, and the student spirit sticks. The staff is enthusiastic and kind. I have foundthat the teachers, as well as administration, work as a team with the parents for the children. For starters, although not all, mostteachers are very passionate about learning, are very engaged with students, and really want their students to succeed. Along with that, the school has integratedcommon core, and even my son, a bright 8th grader, wrote several poems about science, math, and an arts program in Honors, or AP English class. In his HonorsHistory class, his teacher had him write an essay (Language Arts) about his own take on certain debates. The school is also extremely fortunate that it still offers multipleelectives and arts programs, for example, JMS offers 2 levels of Art, 3 different levels of Orchestra, Band, an award winning Mock Trial team, rigorous computer courses,and my personal favorite, the Speech and Debate team. A nationally ranked team, it's practically built up it's own dynasty. In fact, recently my son informs me we tookhome almost every trophy for several categories! The coach is an amazing and wonderful person. He did not end up with all the great teachers. There was one particular teacher I would havechanged if I could. But that IS how life is. I wanted him to learn to live with and work with a "difficult" teacher. And it worked out really well. So, in addition to academicknowledge he had some real life lessons. Jefferson has computer classes, an orchestra and a band, and many classes that you canchoose from. But if your kid is lucky they will have caring teachers.Or maybe after readingthis review, you might want to pick and choose your teachers, is that possible? My 8th grader was here for 3 yrs, now graduating in June, had great caring teachers.Gavehim alot of support and always had me in the loop with what was happening to him academically. But unfortunately for my 6th grader, right from the first open house, afterspeaking to his teachers, I knew that the teachers were not as caring as the other groups of teachers. He had light homework and hardly any projects, but he was doingokay, til 3rd quarter, failed one subject, but I didn't found out til report card came to my home, his teachers never notified me for a parent conference. Teacher didn't returnmy call til weeks later. To make things worst, he got picked on by other students, shoved onto the floor and gotten hurt. If I sound like an overly protected parent, Nope,very strict with both my boys and neither one of them are trouble makers.
