I am reluctant to write this, but the reality is before us. On February 14, St. Valentine’s Day, we begin the holy time of Lent. So much for indulging in chocolates and sweets, considering Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. On the bright side, if we look at St. Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday through the eyes of faith and love, we see that chocolates and romantic dinners are a mere reflection
of a greater reality – the love of Jesus Christ. For without Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, there would be no understanding of true love or the need for saints. Thus, Valentine’s Day (notice that secularism eliminated the first and most important word -- Saint) would not exist! Perhaps, providentially, God is providing us with an opportunity to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day on Ash Wednesday so that we may put love, relationships and sacrificial love in their proper context. How about a spiritual gift of a Mass intention (you can get a Mass intention at the Rectory Office) or a note telling someone that you will come to the Chapel or church and pray a Holy Hour for their intention, instead of candy, dinners or flowers? On Ash Wednesday, we once again encounter Jesus, who encourages us in the Gospel to be a people of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I am writing now to give us an opportunity to reflect on what we would like to embrace during this holy time of renewal and conversion. Over the past year, I have encouraged everyone to participate in the Oremus and Wild Goose (Holy Spirit) programs. It is my hope that these programs will strengthen our relationship with the Holy Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We will be stronger individually, as a family, and as a parish to endure any trials and fight off the negative forces of the world. Prayer, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, allows us to see the beauty and goodness of life. This Lent, we will offer part two of Wild Goose. Please sign up, even if this is your first time. Other avenues for prayer are attending daily Mass (6:30 or 8:30 a.m.), attending Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesday, attending Perpetual Help devotions on Tuesday at 7 p.m., praying the Rosary more consistently, or reflecting on the Mass readings for the following Sunday. These are a few options for prayer available here at the parish during Lent. When it comes to fasting, it is always good to give up something that we really like. The daily reminder of what we might want, but have chosen to sacrifice, helps us to understand that we long for God to fill us with His goodness instead of us filling ourselves up with the pleasures of life. Fasting can also take the form of letting go of habits. (I heard it typically takes 3-4 weeks to break a habit.) Lent is a perfect opportunity to overcome bad and destructive habits, especially for those who may be caught up in social media and the web.
Finally, as we have for many years here at Divine Child, we use the time of Lent to fulfill our obligation of almsgiving through contributing to the CSA. If we gave up the special coffee (which is expensive), the $5 pizzas and other delights, we can, as a parish, do great good here in the Archdiocese. You will be receiving a letter in the mail soon with all the details. I pray you will take time in the next week to ponder and pray, asking the Lord what He desires of you during the holy time of Lent. I know it will be well worth the effort. Blessings, Fr. Jim Bilot

“Remember, ushers bring people together!” -Anonymous
For the past few weeks, we have been discussing the importance of Sacred Scripture in the work of implementing Unleash the Gospel. As we continue this walk through the document, we are still on the Guidepost, “The Word Made Flesh,” which calls us to encounter Jesus, who is the incarnate Word of God. Foundational to any renewal that
might happen in the Church is the renewal of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Sacrament of Reconciliation, or Confession, is the privileged Sacrament where we are brought into intimate contact with the mercy of God.
If we are to be a parish focused on mission, then we need to understand two things. First, sin really separates us from God. It was in and through one sin that our whole humanity suffered the effects of the Fall of Adam and Eve. For each one of us, each and every sin that we commit drives a wedge between us and the Lord. The effects of sin are not so much a punishment that God gives to us as they are the turning away from God that we cannot heal on our own. While we are perfectly capable of turning away from God on our own ability; we are utterly incapable of restoring that gap by our own ability.
In response to the Fall and each of our sins, Jesus established the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the Upper Room after the Resurrection. He appeared to the disciples and breath on them saying, “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:23). In doing this, Jesus gave the Apostles the ability to forgive sins in His name. When we go to a priest for confession, we are not going to confess to a specific priest, but we are going to Jesus. A priest is an alter Christus, another Christ, and through his ordination is given the same power that was given to the Apostles from our Lord.
Right now, I would assume there are many parishioners who have not been to confession for many years. I would encourage you to take the plunge and return to the Sacrament. The precept of the Church is that each Catholic goes to confession at least once a year. However, a regular and frequent participation in the Sacrament enables us to grow in holiness and to turn away from sin more quickly. A key to being a missionary Church is to be a group of believers humble enough to recognize our faults and seek the Lord’s mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Beatification Mass Here it’s months later…but still thinking and
reflecting…and as far as 2017 is concerned, I must say my most memorable event was the Beatification Mass for Blessed Father Solanus Casey. It was heart-warming, filled with emotion and joy, and filled with a sense of regret and remorse.
I say that because as I sat and watched the Catholic rituals performed, I felt tears in my eyes as I wished that I was one of the many persons touched by this gentle priest. I regret not being born many years earlier so I could have met and shook hands with Father. I watched his family members wistfully near the “altar” and envied them. I wished I was one of them. That’s silly, isn’t it? But, it would be so cool to say that your great uncle performed miracles and was so loved by everyone. That’s how awestruck was the tone of the Beatification Mass, in addition to its mesmerizing drama that unfolded before your eyes. I was so proud of our own Father Jim acting in a pivotal role on the altar. That too, made me emotional, and between teardrops, I must have clicked my Nikon 500 times and have more than enough memories to document this sacred event.
Leaving the arena on that cold, rainy, windy day, we were trekking behind our wonderful bus leader, Mr. Michalik. Umbrellas were popping inside out and it looked ridiculous. But, we didn’t care. But sitting on the bus ride home, drenched with water, I wouldn’t have traded that day for any other day. It was that special. I feel blessed to have witnessed such a special ceremonial Mass, that it was totally worth losing any umbrella.
In the special Beatification packet, I withdrew the prayer card, and placed it next to a statue of St. Francis on my fireplace mantle. When I glance at it, I smile because I’m sure he knows I was a guest to see him Blessed.
With that said, Blessed Father Solanus stands as a perfect model for St. Vincent De Paul’s members, as well as their clients, serving the poor. By saying a “Thank you God Ahead of Time,” according to Blessed Father Solanus, we joyfully continue God’s work in serving the poor and disadvantaged, the lost and forgotten.
God bless you. ~~ Mindy Delano

FOLEY COUNCIL SPONSORS 1Oth ANNUAL
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS CHESS TOURNAMENT
On Saturday, January 20th, 156 students from around the archdiocese descended upon Divine Child High School for the 10th Annual Bishop Foley Catholic Schools Chess Tournament. Eleven schools in total from the east-side to the west side, from north to south came to compete in this highly anticipated event. Players started arriving around 7:30 am to register for the first match that was scheduled for 8:50. There were a total of five matches, with competition between players heightening with each new challenger. Pizza lunch was provided to the players, coaches and their families between the fourth and fifth rounds. At the end of the fifth round the scores were gathered and prizes awarded. Players who won their game were awarded one point and those who had a draw each received a half a point. The tournament was separated into three divisions, K-3, K-5 and K-8. The top three ranking players in each division received a first, second and third place trophy. The fourth through sixth ranked players received medals. The top four scores from each school, in each division, were added up to determine the winner of the coveted team trophy. This year history was made, as St. Clair Shores’ St. Isaac Jogues won the team trophy in all three divisions. The clean sweep was directed under SIJ Chess Instructor/Moderator Mr. Robert Centner. Divine Child Chess came closest to SIJ in the K-5 Division with DC totaling 14.5 points to SIJ’s 15.5 points. The Divine Child players who placed in the tournament were: Joseph Arriola, placing 5th in K-3 with 4 wins, Luca Ciavaglia, placing 4th in K-5 with 4 wins and Sean Slusser, placing 6th in K-5 with 4 wins. Congratulations to the Divine Child players and all the kids that came out and played so well. Overall, more than twenty Foley Knights, their wives and their families came out to work the tournament; setting up, serving concessions, proctoring games or cleaning up. It was a great way to help out the youth, as we work to build community with Catholic values. The 156 kids came and competed in a Catholic- centered competition with prayer and good sportsmanship. It was good to see so many kids learning and having fun at the same time. Thank you to all the Knights, families and “friends of Foley” who came out and volunteered their time to make this another great success. Proceeds raised will help fund two Foley Chess Scholarships to Divine Child Chess team members…..stay tuned!
It’s not too late to participate in our upcoming degree! If you are thinking of becoming a Foley Knight,
then call our office, 313-212-1835, or talk to a Brother Foley Knight! Our next major degree is planned for Sunday, February 18th. Don’t wait until the last minute. Contact a Knight if you
are interested in joining us…call now for an application.

February 8: International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000. On February 8, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon. Through prayer, we not only reflect on the experiences of those who have suffered through this affront to human dignity, but also comfort, strengthen, and help empower survivors.
St. Josephine Bakhita
A Healing Prayer Jesus, heal our lives, our broken spirits,
Our hearts and minds, our body and soul.
Jesus, hear our prayer; You know our weakness, Our struggle and pain, for You too have suffered.
Jesus, listen in love as You once did at Cana To Your Mother Mary, and respond in mercy.
Amen.
