The opening sequence, l ike theon e in the previous collaborationo f Steven Spielberg an d GeorgeLucas, is inspired f i lmmaking.

D r. Jones (Harrison Ford), th efearless archeologist, meets agang of murderous Chinese in a1935 Shanghai night club. The en-tertainment is suppl ied by anA m e r i c a n b e a u t y ( K a t eC a p s h a w ) s i n g i n g A n y t h i n gGoes in Chinese, plus a BusbyBerkeley l ine of chorines .

A four-alarm brannigan breakso u t and Ford and Capshaw es-cape, aided by an Oriental tyke,Ke Huy Quan . But their problemsare o n l y beg inn ing as they fly in a

pilot less plane over the Hima-layas.A f t e r several adve ntures they

arrive at a desolated village inIndia. Jones is determined to helpthe village by rescuing its stolenchildren and its magic stone, spir-i ted away by an evi l kingdom.

So far so good. Next comes anhour of chases and one c l i ff -hanger after another devised bydirector Spielberg and writersW i l ia r d H uyck and Gloria Katz,w h o w o r k e d fr o m Lu cas 's originalstory.

But there aresome disturbing inconsistencies.The high priest of the evil cultplucks the heart out of a sacrifi-cial victim, whose chest m irac-ulously heals over. Is this to beviewed seriously, or is it an illu-s ion? Does the wretched f e l l o whave to remain heartless, l ike theCowardly Lion? The quest ion isrendered unnecessary becauseth e victim is then barbecued in alava pit.

Geographic incongrui t ies canbe bothersome. The escaping t riofl y completely across Ch ina without r e f u e l i n g a bi-motor plane into the Himalayas, course

down a m ountain gorge that is o b-viously Northern Cal i fornia andsupposedly land in India actu-ally S ri Lanka .

A s he demon strated in 1941,Spielberg can sometime s prov e tobe excessive. That becomes evi-dent in the Indiana Jones ban-que t scene, w hich provides a feasto f live eels, oversized roaches,monkey brains and other delecta-bles.

Such things wil l no t deter themillions of f i lmgoers wh o haveeagerly awaited the sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Ford,w h o had a serious back ai lmentduring fi lming, performs admi-rably: He is the perfect hero f orthis kind of adven tu re .
