Nosce Te Ipsum Weekly Bulletin Week Commencing 23rd January 2017 Reception: The Reception class had a busy first week back. We were all keen to share our holiday news and describe our favourite Christmas presents. We have also been looking at how the autumn has changed into winter and what that means. We have painted winter hats by mixing cold colours, planted bulbs and have frozen water ready for an exciting experiment next week. Please can I remind parents to kindly send into school photographs of your child when they were a baby and photos of any pets you may have. Mrs Stoner Year 1: We have had a very busy first week back at school. The children have settled back into their routine very quickly. We were concentrating on stories with repeating patterns and the class enjoyed working on a story called Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain. The children noticed the different adjectives used and were able to join in with the repeating pattern. We worked with a partner to sequence and retell the story which the children were able to perform to their classmates. If your child purchased a wish at the Christmas Fair, we would be grateful if they could please bring it into school to show us. Mrs Kent and Mrs Moore Year 2: The children have had a busy start back at school but have all settled well and worked hard. We have started all of our new topics for the spring term. For English last week, the children enjoyed telling and writing about their holidays and all the lovely things they did and the presents they received! We also read a story called ‘Lost and Found’ and the children drew their own story maps. For Maths last week we practised partitioning numbers and adding numbers using partitioning. We also looked at ordinal numbers and played different race games. For History, DT and Art we learnt about the Great Fire of London, why it happened and who was affected by it. The children have begun to make models of a house. For PSHE we have been discussing working collaboratively and begun to talk about healthy eating and the different types of food in each food group. For RE we talked about our favourite stories and especially those with morals at the ending. We discussed what being a good learner is all about and the children made a poster to show what aspects, qualities and skills they feel demonstrate this. Please can I ask that the children bring in a plastic bag with their uniform in, so on Sports days (Wednesday and Thursday) if they end up getting muddy they can pack their clothes away without making their school rucksack muddy!

Year 2:

The children have had a busy start back at school but have all settled well and worked hard.

Year 3:Year 3 have come back to school with a lovely fresh enthusiasm. It was great to hear about what everyone had got up to over Christmas, especially the amazing holidays that some of you went on.

In maths we have started off with place value and will move on to looking at time and duration next week. Please ask your child to tell you the time as often as you can and ask questions about duration. e.g. What time did your favourite programme start and finish?’ ‘How long was it on for?’

In Literacy we have been having a great time looking at humorous poetry and in History we have started looking at the Iron Age and the way of life for the Celts.

In Spanish we learned about the festival of Reyes, which is Epiphany. We each tried a slice of ‘Rosca de Reyes’ made by Mrs Watkins, and Althea got the little figurine representing baby Jesus, so she was the Queen of our lesson!A lovely first week back Year 3! From the Year 3 Teaching Team.

Year 4The children in Year 4 have made a productive start to the new term and are looking forward to the trip to the bilingual school this coming Friday, where they can practise their Spanish skills. I have enjoyed getting to know the members of my new class. They have made me feel very welcome after returning from my maternity leave.Mrs Gann

Year 5 & 6:It was wonderful to welcome the Year 5 and 6 pupils back to Deepdene after the Christmas holidays. They have returned with enthusiasm and energy, ready to get stuck in to the new term. Fantastic! We are thrilled to welcome a new Year 6 class member, Maria, who joined us at the start of term. She is fitting in beautifully! It is also great to see the Year 5 and 6 pupils join together in the morning tutor time and morning activity sessions.

In these early weeks of term, many of our Year 6 pupils are in the exciting but nerve-wracking position of sitting senior school entrance examinations and attending interviews at a number of local independent schools. We would like to wish the best of luck to these pupils who have been working tirelessly in preparation. We are very proud of you all! Happily, on the last day of the Michaelmas Term, we received news that Emily Barden has passed her entrance examinations and been offered a place at Lewes Old Grammar School. Similarly, Louie Glanvill has accepted the offer of a place at Shoreham College. Well done, both of you!

Our Year 6 pupils awaiting state school places are also on countdown as they wait to receive news of the schools they will attend next year. We hope that they are all successful in securing places at their first choice schools.Mrs Croucher

It has been so wonderful teaching Y4, 5 and 6 last week. Everyone has worked extremely hard, which is a great start to the new term. Well done, everyone!

Times table challenge results:

Fastest time (77 grid): Abraham is the one to beat with a time of 3 minutes 54 seconds.

Fastest time (55 grid): Sidney is currently the fastest with a time of 3 minutes and 9 seconds. Well done!

Most improved time: Maya with a whopping improvement of 4 minutes 58 seconds. Wow!

Most improved score: Jack and Maya, who both improved by an extra two correct questions. Keep up the good work!

Sports:Deepdene Michaelmas Term Sports Review by Mr AdamsLast term was an exciting time for sports at Deepdene. We saw a vast amount of progress in our football teams with many pupils playing in fixtures throughout the term. Our girls, who have enjoyed using the excellent pool facilities at Roedean, have come on leaps and bounds with their swimming. Lower school pupils have shown great progress and our Reception pupils, who are new to sports lessons at Deepdene, have shown great talent, enthusiastically embracing competitive sport. Well done, everyone!

Upper School Sports Stars last term:Eliana Trosino (Y5) has shown fantastic ability in Football challenging both girls and boys with her skills and understanding.

Finley Shear (Y6) for his massive improvement and commitment towards playing sport.

William Dove (Y4) who played his first match in November achieving a gold award towards sport for his commitment to the team

Lower School Sports Stars last term:Our very own ‘Magic Mason’ (Y1) has progressed well in his attacking and defending strategies.

Roxanne Lavelle (Y1), Annabelle Walters (Y1), Esme Brown (Y1), Minnie Marshall (Y2), and Isabella Kreel (Y2) have all applied themselves well in competitive sport and made a vast amount of progress.

This term will see our children developing even further with sports such as Rugby, Swimming, Netball and, a little later in the term, Basketball.

Finally, for those who don’t know, our sporting fixtures are all posted on the DB Sports Department calendar on our school VLE which we call DB Primary. This mainly affects pupils in the Upper School. The Sports Department calendar can be accessed by your child with the login they have been issued with at school. For those unsure of how to support their child in logging in to DB Primary, the fixture dates for the next term are going to appear in the weekly bulletin as usual, on our new fixtures sports board.

On behalf of the Sports Department at Deepdene, I would like to say thank you for your support over the last term. We are all looking forward to another productive term!Mr James AdamsHead of Sports
