Nosce Te Ipsum Weekly Bulletin Week Commencing 21st November 2016 Christmas Fayre - Sunday 4th December 2016 Preparations are underway for the Christmas Fayre. The festive event this year will be held at the school between 1:00-3:00pm on Sunday 4th December 2016. You are all invited to gather in the front playground at 3:15pm to end the event with a carol sing-along which will be directed by Mrs Stoner. Mulled wine and Prosecco will be available to purchase for those over the age of 18 as well as soft drinks, cakes and mince pies. There are a selection of different stalls to visit as well as some other Christmassy activities for you and your children to participate in. Our guest of honour will be awaiting a visit from those who pass through his grotto! If you would like to be involved with this event then please let your class representative know. Tickets will be on sale from Monday 21st November via Miss Taylor and will cost £1 each. A separate Parentmail from the Deepdene Association will be sent out with further details about the fayre next week. Headteacher’s News It has been a busy couple of weeks since I last wrote to you all and is set to gear up as we approach the end of term. Mrs Stoner led a very special Remembrance assembly last week in school, with pupils in all year groups participating. We all learnt a little more about the different types of poppies you can buy and what they represent. We also discovered how the poppy symbol became so important and how this flower is represented slightly differently across the globe at Remembrance time. Preparations are well underway for the Christmas performances. We are squeezing some exciting teaching and learning initiatives into our already busy and broad curriculum. Next week pupils have the ‘Mad about Maths’ day to look forward to. This is a day devoted to mathematical cross-curricular learning. Having seen the agenda for the day, I am quite sure your children will have plenty to share after a busy day in school next Monday. We also have the second scheduled workshops at Roedean starting next Friday for pupils in Years 1,2 and 3. The subject focus this time is English and without saying too much I know that the pupils are visiting the Roedean farm and will be using this as a stimulus for the activities that are set to follow. Pupils to wear full school uniform including their waterproof coat on this day please. The Upper School pupils will be attending their workshop on Monday 28th November and will participate in two workshops; one will focus on developing their descriptive writing skills and the other will involve them writing a story for a film. As the pupils will be out and about across the Roedean site, please can they come to school on this day in their Upper School PE kit. They can stay in their kit for the remainder of the day. Please may I remind you all to check the back of the bulletin for forthcoming events and dates for your diary. Both class teachers and I look forward to seeing many of you next Wednesday afternoon/evening for our Parent Teacher Consultation Evening. Elizabeth Brown Headteacher

Reception NewsThe sun shone as the children in Reception enjoyed their Autumn walk to the Secret Garden. They collected lots of leaves and looked at the environment around them to see the differences from their first walk at the beginning of term. It was a great opportunity for some outdoor learning and was enjoyed by all who took part!Mrs Stoner

Year 1 News The dinosaurs have arrived in Year One this week! Our focus has been on information texts. We have been learning how to use non-fiction books to find out more information about dinosaurs. We recorded our thoughts about what we already know and what we would like to find out, being careful to use full sentences, capital letters and full stops. By the end of the week, the children have become dinosaur experts! Friendship has been a recurring theme in PSHE and during circle time the children have been developing a deeper understanding of the importance of friendship and the qualities that make a good friend. It has been lovely to observe this in action in the playground.

Year One are very much looking forward to their trip to Hove Museum as part of their history topic Toys from the Past. I’m sure that they will have lots of information to share with you! Photographs to follow in the bulletin next week. Have a good weekend. The Year One Teaching Team

Year 2 News Year 2 have been practising their mental maths, counting on and back from numbers to work out answers to number problems. We have also been going over our number bonds and we all need to keep practising these (to 10/20/100) so that we can beat Ms Rosen at ‘Hit the Button’ on the computer!

In English we have been looking at nouns and verbs and have been practising using a thesaurus to find ‘better’ words to use to improve our sentences. I am really pleased with how the children have been improving their reading and their joined-up writing. They wrote a wonderful remembrance poem and read it out to the whole school during assembly.

In RE we have learned more about Remembrance Day and the children all copied a poem which we are displaying in the classroom. I am very impressed with all of the children’s handwriting. They tried very hard with this particular piece of work and the work is beautiful.

We have been continuing to learn about Tocuaro in Mexico and have looked at the similarities and differences between Hove and Tocuaro. We have also looked at the weather, transport and buildings in Tocuaro. We are going to look at Mexican food next and will even taste some! We’re hoping to visit a Mexican restaurant so I shall keep you updated on when this may be.Science has been very interesting as we have been looking at different electrical items and noticing which run on mains or battery.

We enjoyed our ICT lesson which was on algorithms and we had to guide a rocket to get to the station. We whizzed through this, with most pupils moving to the next level very quickly!Ms Rosen

Year 3 News Year 3 have been continuing their Stone Age theme with a new text in Literacy: How To Wash A Woolly Mammoth. This hilarious guide helps children to learn how to write properly ordered instructions using verbs in the imperative. They will now write their own instructions on how to wash a wild beast!

Pupils are learning their colours in Spanish at the moment, so do ask them for a few at home; it will help them to remember!Year 3 have been learning about multiplication and division this week and have learnt how to create lots of number families using these facts. They have also been trying their hand at word problems. Parents, please give your children simple word problems to solve.

We have found out more about volcanoes in Geography this week and how they are measured using the Mercalli Scale. The children drew detailed pictures of what would happen at different points on the scale.

What a busy week! The Year 3 Teaching Team.

In science Year 5 are learning about germination and what factors can affect the viability of a seed. Ms Brown took a visit to the Year 5 Science lesson last week and found herself getting her hands very dirty indeed! The lesson involved planting a selection of different seeds in yogurt pots. There were seeds and soil everywhere as pupils excitedly set about the task. In groups the students then decided on one particular factor to focus on so that they could then set up a fair and reliable experiment to measure what factors would affect the germination of their seeds. Eliana and Luca have planted their seeds in four different types of soil to see how this will affect the process. The students are enjoying monitoring their experiment.Ms Jambor

Year 6 News The Year 6 pupils have been working hard in all of their curriculum subjects this week, but the subject that has most intrigued me has been Science. An experiment seems to be in full swing, with small pots of food dotted all over the room securely wrapped in clingfilm. I have been told by Ms Jambor that the pots will stay in place for a week, giving the pupils time to observe what happens to each different piece of food. I am anticipating seeing something rather unsavoury in some of the pots by the end of the experiment! For their Science homework, the pupils were asked to research a well-known scientist and special mention goes to Seth who produced a piece of work that exceeded expectations. He took the time to find out all about Louis Pasteur and produced a stunning poster display – see photo. Well done to Seth who was awarded a golden ticket and a post card home.

In other news, there was much excitement on Monday morning when Emily Barden arrived at school announcing that she had received a letter from the Queen. As part of an English project last year, all of the current Year 6 pupils wrote a letter to a

person they admired and Emily chose the Queen. During the project, we explored the features of letter writing and focused on planning and writing cohesive paragraphs. Clearly the Queen was suitably impressed with Emily’s writing skills since she took the time to reply to her letter and express her thanks. We were all thrilled in the Year 6 classroom! Maybe it’s time we tried our hands at letter writing again to see who else might respond. If any pupils do decide to write to one of their heroes, please let me know and we will eagerly wait for a response. Maybe someone will be as lucky as Emily!

Deepdene V Shoreham College Match Report

On Wednesday 9th November, Deepdene played in a football fixture against Shoreham College. Unlike our team, the Shoreham team was made up entirely of Year 6s so it was going to be a tough match. They started off by looking very enthusiastic. We managed to keep the score at 0 - 0 for a while. Shoreham took a few shots and finally one went in. All our defenders continued to work hard and were doing an amazing job, but then we managed to concede another. After half time, Jack ran down the wing and passed it to Eliana. We scored and for some time we managed to keep the score at 2-1. Jack did very well as centre back - he got injured but he carried after a little rest. He also saved a few shots in the goalie position. Considering we were a mixed team aged 8-11 years playing against all Year 6s, I think we did very well. As we move forward, I think we need to improve holding our shape, but a big well done to all.Eliana Trosino, Year 5
