Story sample: Gisselfeld manor The largest 16th century manor on ZealandGisselfeld between Haslev and Næstved has been traced back to 1381. One of Denmark's largest estates and most powerful estates ever since, it now has 3,850 hectares of forest, fields and meadows. In 1755, Gisselfeld became a home for unmarried ladies of nobility, supervised by a "senior director" from the Danneskiold-Samsøe family. The three-winged main building was built by Peder Oxe in 1547-75 in a transitional style spanning late Gothic to Renaissance. It is one of the largest manor houses from the period. The impressive romantic park was landscaped in the 19th century complete with a carp pond and orangery. In fact, Hans Christian Andersen wrote his famous fairytale The Ugly Duckling while visiting Gisselfeld.

He showed his grandfather and the king who was boss When eighteen-year-old nobleman Peder Oxe returned home in 1537 after a long study trip, his father, Johan, had died and his inheritance hung in the balance. Johan Oxe had bought Gisselfeld from its owner, who was deep in depth, but his own father-in-law, Mogens Gøje, claimed first rights to buy and had the deeds annulled. Peder Oxe took his grandfather to court - and won. Peder Oxe went on to become one of Denmark's richest men in charge of state finances. But he made powerful enemies. In 1558, they seized their chance. Peder Oxe was forced into exile, and his property was taken away. But when Denmark found itself at war with Sweden in 1566, and its money vaults were empty, the king could no longer manage without his efficient minister of finance. Peder Oxe returned home and reclaimed both his estates and position.

Story sample: Christiania Christiania - Hippie Heaven In 1971, the Armed Forces retreated from the barracks in Bådsmandsstræde in Christianshavn. And the same year, young squatters from Copenhagen moved in with a dream of living along alternative lines – both in terms of lifestyle and organisation. Later, the free city spread to include the inner and outer ramparts almost up to Refs Peninsula. Christiania's almost 40-year history has been tainted by conflicts and tugs of war between the Christianites and the state, though. The state wants legislation and normalisation, which contradicts with the basic idea of Christiania as a free city and the charm and creativity this inspires.

We will survive "Christiania is a live budding life, a green plant growing between the cobblestones. Clauses cannot create but they can crush. Don't let that happen!" This was what architect Steen Eiler Rasmussen wrote about Christiania's flourishing building culture. After all, the buildings are an important part of what people find is special about the place. The many alternative shapes and colours break from usual ideas of what houses should look like. Creativity and new building mindsets have blossomed because the Christianites have not been constrained by building permits and planning permission. That's partly what is special about Christiania and what attracts tourists from all over the world.
