NAPLAN –15, 16 & 17 May Our 2018 NAPLAN tests are quickly approaching for our Year 3 & 5 students. NAPLAN tests are one way that we receive information about our school’s curriculum programs and teaching practices. Our testing timetable is as follows with testing commencing at 8.45am each day:

Tuesday, 15 May Wednesday,16 May Thursday,17 May Year 3 & Year 5

Language Conventions Writing

Year 3 & Year 5 Reading

Year 3 & Year 5 Numeracy

There are some simple things that families can do to support their child’s success: Have a positive attitude: Encourage your child to approach the big test as they’d approach a giant jigsaw puzzle. There might be some challenging parts, but they can do it! A positive attitude goes a long way toward success. The night before: All of our students have done preparation work for these tasks, so there is no need to spend the night worrying. Students should go to bed early. Remember, brains and bodies need sleep to function well, so don't stay up late! Eat breakfast: Research shows that we think better when we have a full stomach… Don't skip breakfast the morning of the tests. Be on time: Get to school on time or even a little early on the three days of the tests. This way students won’t miss the start of the tests which can make students feel worried or upset. Our teachers will use the first part of the day to make sure our students are relaxed and ready to show us what they can do. Manage your time: Remind your child to scan through the test quickly before starting. Answering the easy questions first can be a time saver and a confidence builder. Plus, it saves more time in the end for them to focus on the hard stuff. I'm stuck! Those tricky problems can sometimes knock our students off balance. Remind them not to get worried or frustrated. Encourage them to:

re-read the question to make sure they understand it

try to solve it the best way they know how

if they’re still stuck, move on. They can come back to it later. (Karen Hatchman) Prep Mothers “Pamper Day” A very warm invitation is extended to our Prep Mums to attend our Mother’s Pamper Day. Home from School Please talk to your children about the importance of going straight home from school. Children’s safety can be put at risk if they “hang around” instead of moving directly to their destination. As students are in school uniform please emphasize that they represent the school and they need to: - Be Safe: Be Respectful: Be Responsible – at all times. (Pat Cavanagh)

Walk Safely to School Day Coolum State School will be celebrating National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 18 May 2018. We encourage students and their families to try to incorporate more walking as part of a

healthy, active way to get around. Walking regularly is great for your child’s health. It also helps to reduce traffic problems around schools and teaches your child about road safety. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

Walking with them the whole way to school

Parking the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Walking “bus” A “walking bus” is where children walk together in a large group with adult helpers walking with them. Clare from our P&C invites parents to help and join their children on this walk to promote fitness, fun and reduce congestion around our school. Please call Clare on 0407 026 619 to nominate as a parent volunteer, to walk with us accompanying the students. We will meet at Cinnamon Ave Park by 7:50am, for an 8:00am departure. Cinnamon Avenue Park is on the western side of Cinnamon Avenue, beside a creek crossing between Fourwinds Avenue and Spindrift Avenue. Leave the car at home on Friday 18 May 2018 and participate in National Walk Safely to School Day. Once at school we will meet at the blue stage area (between Tuckshop and First Aid) for a group photo and fruit. (Ross Naumann)
