Bereits das erste ROTWILD Bike RDH P.1 zeigte 1996 technisch

Machbares in einem vollgefederten Versuchsträger auf: Zahnrie-

menantrieb, elektrische Getriebe-Schaltung, Scheibenbremsen

und die verwendete Carbon-Gabel bewiesen von Beginn an die

Leidenschaft der ROTWILD-Ingenieure eigene Ansätze zu verfol-

gen. Impulsgeber für individuelle Fahrwerks- und Geometriever-

stellungen durch den Biker selbst war 2000 das ILR-System.

2001 legte die Eigenentwicklung des aufwändig konifizierten

Channeltube Rohrsatzes den Grundstein für eine deutliche Ver-

besserung des Stiffness-to-Weight Faktors bei ROTWILD Bikes

und damit die Grundlage der heutigen einmaligen Performance

unserer ROTWILD Rahmen.

Innovationen und deren eigenständige Umsetzung sowie der Ein-

satz neuester Technologien sind für ROTWILD Bikes stets wesent-

liche Bestandteile der Produktphilosophie gewesen. So haben

unsere technische Innovationen das Biken verändert; das Biken

selbst hat im Gegenzug auch ganz erheblich die Entwicklung

unserer Produkte beeinflusst.

Innovations and their independent implementation, together with

the application of the most recent technologies, have always been

essential elements of the product philosophy of ROTWILD bikes.

Our technical innovations have thus changed biking; biking

itself has also considerably influenced the development of

our products.

ROTWILD HAT DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON MOUNTAINBIKES IN

DEN VERGANGENEN 10 JAHREN MIT GEPRÄGT UND WAR

OFT IDEENGEBER FÜR NEUE ANSÄTZE.

Already the first ROTWILD bike RDH P.1 in 1996 demonstrated

what is technically possible in a fully damped test stand:

synchronous belt drive, electrical gear shifting, disk brakes and

the carbon-fibre fork used clearly show the passion of the

ROTWILD engineers for pursuing their own approaches. The

impetus for individual frame and geometry adjustments by the

biker himself was the ILR system of 2000. In 2001, the in-house

development of the elaborately produced conical channel-tube

system paved the way for a significant improvement of the

stiffness-to-weight factor for ROTWILD bikes and thus the basis

for today’s unparalleled performance of our ROTWILD frames.

Eigenständige Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeit bildet für

ROTWILD den Ausgangspunkt der umfangreichen Produktent-

wicklung, deren komplette Durchführung im Haus erfolgt. Auf Ba-

sis eigener Fahrbetriebsmessungen und Prüfstandsergebnisse

werden die Grenzen des Werkstoffs getestet. Neben den CAD-

Zeichnungen (2D/3D) werden in unserem Simulation-Lab Festig-

keitsberechnungen (FEM) durchgeführt. Begleitend erfolgen auf

unseren hauseigenen Prüfständen (Test-Lab) Langzeittests, um

Aussagen über die Lebensdauer der Rahmen zu erhalten. Dehn-

messstreifenverfahren (DMS) und Finite Element Methode (FEM)

bilden auch weiterhin die Grundlage für deutliche Verbesserungen

im Rahmenbau.

Independent research and development work is for ROTWILD

the point of departure for sophisticated product development,

completely performed in-house. On the basis of our own measure-

ments during travel and test stand results, the limits of the mate-

rial are tested. Besides the CAD drawings (2D/3D), finite element

method (FEM) stability calculations are performed in our simulati-

on laboratory. These are accompanied by endurance tests on our

own test stands (Test Lab) in order to obtain data on the life of

the frames. Wire strain gauge and finite element methods conti-

nue to be the basis for significant improvements in frame design.

From the very beginning, ROTWILD frames have set standards

and stand for quality and innovation in technical detail solutions,

as well as for excellence of the materials used. Because our goal

is to build the best bike. For us, this is both the aim and, at the

same time, the challenge that we repeatedly set during the engi-

neering process for the development of new frames and with the

use of the most modern materials (e.g. aluminium AI 7046 T6,

CFK). We place the highest demands on the selection of tubing

suppliers and frame builders who implement the strict specificati-

ons of our development engineers in keeping with the state of the

art in technology.

Seit jeher setzen ROTWILD Rahmen Maßstäbe und stehen ebenso

für Qualität und Innovation bei technischen Detaillösungen,

wie bei den eingesetzten Materialien. Denn unser Ziel ist es das

beste Bike zu bauen. Dies ist für uns Anspruch und Herausforde-

rung zugleich, der wir uns während des Engineeringprozesses

bei der Entwicklung neuer Rahmen und bei der Verwendung

modernster Werkstoffe (z.B. Aluminium AI 7046 T6, CFK) immer

wieder aufs Neue stellen. Höchste Anforderungen stellen wir

an Röhrenlieferanten und Rahmenbauer, die die strengen Vorga-

ben unserer Entwicklungsingenieure auf dem neuesten Stand der

Technik umsetzen.

Nach einem aufwändigen Herstellungsprozess werden die Rah-

men bei ADP sorgfältig assembliert und zu Rahmensets oder

Komplettbikes montiert. Im Anschluss daran erfolgt hier auch die

Endkontrolle. Permanentes Qualitätsmanagement während des

gesamten Fertigungsprozesses gewährleistet die hohe gleich blei-

bende Qualität unserer Produkte mit ihrer außergewöhnlichen Prä-

zision und Verarbeitung.

Following a complex manufacturing process, the frames are as-

sembled with great care at ADP and then to frame systems or

complete bikes. This is then followed by the final inspection. Per-

manent quality management during the entire production process

guarantees the uniformly high quality of our products, with their

extraordinary precision and workmanship.

Die typischen ROTWILD Designmerkmale prägen bereits das

unverkennbare technische Erscheinungsbild des ersten Serien-

Bikes: Gebürsteter Aluminiumrahmen, klar gepulvert. ROTWILD

Schriftzug, Banderole mit technischen Angaben am Unterrohr,

angepasste Decals am Sitzrohr sowie an den Kettenstreben.

Deutlich sichtbar sind die unbehandelten Schweißnähte, die die

Perfektion in der Verarbeitung zeigen. Das ROTWILD Bike Design-

Konzept gewann unter anderem bereits 1996 die Ehrenaus-

zeichnung für höchste Designqualität beim „Deutschen Preis für

Kommunikationsdesign“.

The design features typical of ROTWILD from the very beginning

already characterise the unmistakable technical appearance of

the first serially manufactured bikes: brushed aluminium frame,

clearly pulverised. The ROTWILD emblem, a seal with technical

data on the lower tubing, fitting decals on the seat tubing and

also on the chain struts. Clearly visible are the unfinished welding

joints, showing the perfection in machining. Already in 1996,

the ROTWILD bike design concept received among others an

award for the best design quality of the “German Prize for

Communications Design”.

Die Einführung eigener Race-orientierter Modelle zog logischer-

weise die Weiterentwicklung des ROTWILD Grunddesign im Seg-

ment der High-End Wettkampfbikes nach sich: Die Aufnahme der

Farbe Weiß (Unterrohr sowie Kettenstreben-Decals) in das ROT-

WILD Farbschemata steht von nun an als ein Merkmal der speziell

auf Wettkampf ausgerichteten Modelle. Dies macht eines deut-

lich: Einen für Wettkampf optimierten High-End Rahmen mit ei-

genem Rohrsatz und angepasster Geometrie.

The introduction of our own racing-oriented models logically

stimulated the further development of the basic ROTWILD design

in the high-end racing bike segment: The inclusion of the colour

white (lower tubing and chain strut decals) in the ROTWILD

colour scheme has now become a feature of the models specially

designed for racing. This makes one thing clear: a high-end frame

optimised for racing competition, with its own tubing system and

matching geometry.

Wie umfassend der Begriff Design bei einem ROTWILD ist, zeigt

nicht nur das Erscheinungsbild der Bike, sondern vor allem das

bis ins Detail ausgearbeitete Produkt- und Industriedesign. Die

Leidenschaft, ein Produkt auf höchstem technischen Niveau her-

zustellen und sich selbst immer wieder neuen Herausforderungen

zu stellen, manifestiert sich am Ende in der Umsetzung einer

Vielzahl von technischen Detaillösungen in einem eigenständigen

How universal the concept of design is for a ROTWILD is seen not

only by the appearance of the bike, but above all in the product

and industry design, developed to the minutest detail. The

passion for producing a product at the highest level of engineering

and repeatedly setting new challenges ultimately manifests itself

in the implementation of a variety of technical solutions in an

independent total product.

lung des Serienbikes dar. Am Realmodell werden alle konstrukti-

ven Details – nicht nur des Rahmens, sondern auch der Anbautei-

le – auf Funktion und Belastbarkeit überprüft. Neue Technologien

und Werkstoffe werden vor der Serienproduktion auf ihre dauer-

hafte Betriebsfestigkeit auf eigenen Versucheinrichtungen gete-

stet. Grundlage hierzu bilden praxisgerechte, dem Einsatzzweck

angepasste Belastungskollektive.

Prototypes represent an essential milestone in the development

of serially produced bikes. On the real model all structural details

– not only for the frame, but for the built-on parts as well – are

tested regarding function and load capability. New technologies

and materials are subjected to endurance testing on our own test

facilities prior to serial production. The basis for testing is a pra-

ctice-oriented collective of loading investigations in accord with

the foreseen application.

Competitive technology for serial production is a ROTWILD motto

found again and again for the daily riding of ROTWILD bikes.

And this is why cyclists of the FIAT ROTWILD TEAM are our

professional partners in the implementation of new frame

construction technologies throughout the entire development

process. Because they make demands at the highest level of sport

on the material, up to its limits and beyond. By way of the team

cyclist, the necessary and comprehensive feedback, with new

ideas and suggestions for improvements, is incorporated in the

prototypes. The result is the optimum serially produced bike for

the foreseen application.

Markantes Erkennungszeichen und Basis der ROTWILD Rahmen: die von ADP

ENGINEERING entwickelte und hochleistungsfähige CHANNELTUBE Technologie.

Die exklusiv in ROTWILD Mountainbikes, Rennrädern und CrossRoad Bikes einge-

setzten CHANNELTUBE Rohrsätze werden präzise von Hand verarbeitet und zeichnen

sich durch an den jeweiligen Einsatzzweck angepasste einzelne Rohrabschnitte aus.

Deren jeweilige Wandstärke und Rohrkontur entsprechen den experimentell und ana-

lytisch ermittelten Belastungswerten. Durch diese individuelle Gestaltung ist es mög-

lich, auf spezielle Einsatzschwerpunkte für jeden Bike-Typ einzugehen, wie z. B. Er-

höhung der Tretlagersteifigkeit oder Spurstabilität, bzw. Gewicht dort zu reduzieren,

wo es sinnvoll ist.

Distinctive mark and basis of all ROTWILD frames: the CHANNELTUBE technology

developed by ADP ENGINEERING. These tubing sets, exclusively developed specifi-

cally for ROTWILD mountain bikes, racing bikes and road bikes, are characterised by

tube sections with wall thicknesses based experimentally and analytically determined

values, and individually matched to each area of use. This individual design allows us

to emphasise specific development aspects in relating to the intended use of the fi-

nished bikes, for instance, to increase the bottom bracket rigidity, the track stability

or to reduce weight wherever it makes sense.

Al 7046 T6 ist eine Aluminium-Legierung, deren Unterschiede gegenüber der bisher

verwendeten klassischen Al-Legierung 7020 T6 in der Zusammensetzung der einzel-

nen Legierungsbestandteile liegen. Die bessere Warmaushärtung des Materials führt

zu einer deutlich höheren Zugfestigkeit gegenüber Al 7020 (ca. 30 %). Zusätzlich

verschiebt sich die für das Bauteil so wichtige Dehngrenze erheblich nach oben

(ca. 20 %) und erhöht somit die Sicherheit gegenüber Gewaltrissen oder Brüchen.

Die Kombination von Al 7046 T6 mit unserer bewährten CHANNELTUBE Technologie

nutzt die mechanischen Werkstoffeigenschaften und ergibt für unsere ROTWILD

Bikes ein superleichtes Rahmenmaterial mit deutlich verbessertem Leichtbaufaktor–

ohne Einbußen an Lebensdauer. An der Grenze des derzeit technisch Machbaren

findet das Unterrohr in den Aluminium-Modellen der XC Racing Series Verwendung:

4-fach innenkonifiziert, 2-fach außenkonifiziert, 3 verschiedene Außenkonturen

(Konifizierung = Veränderung der Wandstärke).

Al 7046 T6 is an aluminum alloy with a different formula of basic material contents,

e.g. in comparison with the often used classical Al-Alloy 7020 T6. The improved hot

hardening of the material leads to a significantly higher tensile strength than

Al 7020 (around 30 %). In addition, the extremely important expansion limit for a

component becomes much higher (around 40 %) and increases resistance to shock

fractures or breaks. The use of the new Al-Alloy Al 7046 T6, in combination with our

proven CHANNEL Tube Shape Technology, results in super-light frame materials with

significantly improved mechanical properties and an optimised weight /durability fac-

tor for ROTWILD bikes. At the limit of production: The new downtube of the ROT-

WILD XC Racing Series models – 4 times inside-butted, 2 times outside-butted,

3 different shapes.

Steif, leicht und lange Lebensdauer – die Verwendung von kohlefaserverstärktem

Kunststoff (CFK) bringt im Rahmenbau deutliche Vorteile. Für die neuen ROTWILD

Bikes mit CFK Hauptrahmen verwenden unsere Ingenieure das „Tube to Tube“ Ver-

fahren, bei dem die einzelnen Kohlefaser-Röhren passgenau miteinander verklebt

werden. Im Vorfeld werden alle Rohre einzeln von Hand gefertigt. Rohrform, Rohrdicke

und Faserverlauf richten sich dabei am optimalen Kraftverlauf innerhalb der Kon-

struktion aus. Damit setzen wir erstmalig die eigenständige und bewährte CHANNEL-

TUBE Technologie als Kohlefaser-Hauptrahmen in einem hochleistungsfähigen Kon-

zept mit höchster Verarbeitungsqualität um.

Stiff, light and high durability for a long life cycle: For the new ROTWILD Carbon Fib-

re reinforced plastic (CFP) our engineers use a “tube to tube” technology where every

single CFP-tube is bounded together with high dimension accuracy. Each single tube

is made by hand. Shape, thickness and the directions of the fibre are orientated to

the forces within the construction. At this point we are able to use CFP technology

within a ROTWILD mainframe for the first time. For a highly competitive construction

with a maximum of first-class quality.

Der Einsatz von CFK im Rahmenbau ist für ROTWILD kein Neuland. 2003 realisier-

ten wir erstmals bei den High End Fullsuspension Bikes einen Hinterbau aus kohle-

faserverstärktem Kunststoff mit asymmetrisch zueinander versetzten Kettenstreben.

Die organische Bauteilgestalt von Ketten- und Sattelstreben und deren aufwändige

Konifizierung sorgt für eine bestmögliche Ausnutzung der spezifischen Fasereigen-

schaften. Im Ergebnis erzielen wir eine Gewichtsreduktion von 30% gegenüber ver-

gleichbaren Al-Konstruktionen. Da sich diese Technologie in den vergangenen Jahren

außerordentlich bewährt hat, setzen wir CFK Ketten- und Sattelstreben bei allen

ROTWILD Fullsuspensions (außer R.E.D.) ein – sogar in den Downhill-Boliden unserer

Team FIAT ROTWILD Fahrer.

Using Carbon Fibre reinforced plastic (CFP) is not new to ROTWILD. Since 2003 we

use CFP within the rear frame construction with its asymmetrically aligned chain and

seatstays. This organic component design is exploiting the specific properties of fibre

composites in the best possible way and outperforms those from conventional materi-

als (e.g. steel or aluminum). The result is a weight reduction of 30% when compared

with aluminium constructions. Based on the positive experiences we’ve made in the

meantime we are able to implement a CFP rear suspension in every full suspension

bike (expt. R.E.D.) – even within our downhill bike.

Marathon-Race, CrossCountry oder All Mountain: Ursprünglich für unsere gewichts-

Marathon race, cross country or all mountain: Approved in our lightweight race bikes

we have extended our ROTWILD bike collection with the ACTIVE LINKAGE System.

The ACTIVE LINKAGE system is one of the most responsive suspension systems. The

construction is based on an active kinematic system and is characterized by a maxi-

mum of efficient traction and sufficient riding comfort – with outstanding perfor-

mance for a wide range if biking.

Neben der Vermeidung ungewünschter Federungseinflüsse sind ein sensibles und

agiles Ansprechverhalten bei maximaler Kraftübertragung Anforderungen an jedes

Fullsuspension Bike. Entscheidend für ein optimales Fahrverhalten in unterschiedli-

chen Einsatzbereichen ist die richtige Lage der Drehpunkte, die die fahrdynamischen

Faktoren (Antriebseinflüsse, Bremsnickverhalten oder Pedalrückschlag) berücksich-

tigt. Das ROTWILD X-LINKAGE Viergelenksystem bildet im Federwegsbereich über

150 mm das antriebs- und bremsneutrale Fahrwerk für härteste Beanspruchungen

und souveräne Fortbewegung in nahezu jedem Gelände. Die bewährte Kohlefaser-

technolgie wurde den besonderen Anforderungen im Enduro und Freeride-Sektor

angepasst. Dynamischer und belastbarer als je zuvor führt das X-LINKAGE System

damit die ROTWILD Philosophie der eigenständigen und unabhängigen Weiterent-

wicklung fort – als neue Evolutionsstufe auf dem Weg zum ultimativen Freeride-Bike.

The requirements are obvious: no riding influences, maximum power transmission

and a sensitive response characteristic. The right position of pivot points, which

consider important dynamic loads (anti squad, anti dive, pedal response), are those

decisive parameters for a good working full suspension bike. The ROTWILD

X-LINKAGE four pivot point system provides a maximum of traction and control for

a travel of 150 mm and above. We adapted our tried and tested carbon fibre techno-

logy to the extreme loads of freeride and enduro. With the dynamic and durable

X-LINKAGE the ROTWILD philosophy of independent improvement continues – as a

new evolutionary step on our way to the ultimative freeride bike.

Freeride, Dirtjump, Slopestyle oder Tricks auf der Straße – mit neuen Wegen im

Mountainbiking kommen auch extreme Anforderungen an die Leistungsfähigkeit und

Freeriding, dirt jumping, slopestyle or performing tricks in the streets – new school

riders or hardcore mountainbikers as a new generation of riders are characterized by

their complex demands. They have brained up the basic requirements during the

construction process for a new freeride bike. More durability and much more perfor-

mance then ever is needed. Those bikes have to be really strong and made to with-

stand extensive forces – very effective and sensible at the same time. These are

straight requirements a freeride bike has to comply with. Our proven Active Fullsus-

pension, based on a one pivot point system, is able to fullfil these demands and to

provide even more.

The Competition Geometry of the XC racing models is matched to the demands of

racing orientated frame geometries. A longer top tube creates a more stretched riding

position and the simultaneous use of a shorter stem leads to a more direct steering

action. The lengthened wheelbase ensures a smoother ride at high speeds and redu-

ces the roll-over effect on steep gradients.

Spezielles Steckachsensystem, das in Kombination mit DT SWISS 240 Naben zur

deutlichen Erhöhung der Hinterbau- und Gabelsteifigkeit führt. Das Gewicht des

kompletten Achssystems beträgt vorne 32 g, hinten 43 g. Spürbarer Vorteil: Die Tor-

sionssteifigkeit der Gabel nimmt beim Bremsen mit Scheibenbremsen deutlich zu,

das Eintauchverhalten der Gabel wird erheblich besser.

The TAS-Axle system was specially developed for cross-country and marathon use.

The weight of both axles is well below that of conventional quick release axles (front

32 g and rear 43 g). The advantage: The torsional rigidity of the forks is significantly

improved during braking with disc brakes, which clearly improves the sag perfor-

mance when braking.
