FETAL PERIOD.

• The period from the beginning of theninth week to birth is known as the fetalperiod.

• It is characterized by maturation of

tissues and organs and rapid growth ofthe body.

LENGTH MEASUREMENT

• CROWN-RUMP LENGTH (CRL) The length of the fetus is usually indicated as the

(sitting height).

• CROWN-HEEL LENGTH (CHL)

The measurement from the vertex of the skull tothe heel (standing height).

HEAD AND BODY DEVELOPMENT RATIO.

• One of the most striking changes

taking place during fetal life is the

relative slowdown in growth of thehead compared with the rest of the

body.

head size is half of the CRL. 

5TH

 MONTH: head size is one third of the CHL.

AT BIRTH:

head is one fourth of the CHL .

3rd MONTH.

• The face becomes more human looking

eyes moves on ventral aspect from lateral side.

• Primary ossification centre .

• External Genitalia develops.

• Intestinal loops back in abdomen from

umbilical cord.

FOURTH AND FIFTH MONTHS

• The fetus lengthens rapidly

its CRL is approximately 15 cm to19 cm.

•  Weight of the fetus increases little 

still less than 500 g.

• The fetus is covered with fine hair, called lanugo

hair.

• Movement of the fetus can be felt by mother.

Kicking.

Skin reddish and wrinkled. due to lack of underlying connective tissue.

•A fetus born early in sixth month difficult tosurvive. due nervous and respiratory system

non coordination and differentiation. 

•  Other systems are able to function well .

SEVENTH MONTH 

• If fetus born in this age has 90% survival

rate.

• Eye are sensitive to light.

EIGHTH & NINTH MONTH

• Well rounded contours: Due development of

sub cutaneous fat.

• Vernix Caseosa: Skin covered by whitish fatty

substance composed of secretion ofsebaceous gland.

Weight:  gained most of the pregnancy

• Sexual characteristics well marked .Testesdescent  in scrotum.

EIGHTH & NINTH MONTH

• Head circumference is larger than the body.

Biparital diameter is used for themeasurement of the fetal head during

pregnancy

• which is very important for the management

of delivery , if mother has small pelvis
