Using Guest Speakers

• Using outside “guest” presenters can add expertise and interest to many training courses

• But... an inept, unprepared, or arrogant guest speaker can be a disaster

• Are you confident of the speaker’s expertise and presentation skills?

• Does your speaker understand the agenda, time frame, and objectives?

• Does your speaker really understand who the audience is?

• Is the speaker aware of any recent controversies?

• Is everything confirmed in writing?

Annual Professional Development Seminars (PDS)

• All SBDIs must attend entire daylong program annually to maintain certification

• Programs typically occur in the spring

• Purpose of PDS is to hone your skills and update safety info 2006 PDS

• Register online• PDS are taught by MIs• PDS themes and topics

are selected each summer by MIs and NYSED

• PDS introduces next year’s statewide driver and attendant refresher programs

Safety Updates – a Key Part of the PDS

• Annual edition of School Bus Safety Is One Bus Stop At A Time is included in each year’s PDS Manual

• Includes summaries of previous year’s accidents

• Look at PDS CD

Conducting the Physical Performance Test

• Tests must be conducted prior to transporting students and every two years afterwards

• Driver and attendant / monitor tests are similar but different

• Use current forms

• Test must be performed in the sequence on the form

• Prevent injuries by clearly explaining the procedures prior to the test!

Teaching the Driver Basic Course

• Basic must be completed within first year of employment as NYS bus driver

• Minimum 30 hours of instruction

• Must utilize 2010 NYSED curriculum

• Eligible for Point / Insurance Reduction

• Must be taught in an approved facility

Monitor/Attendant Basic Course

• Basic must be completed within first year of employment as NYS bus monitor or attendant

• Minimum 10 hours of instruction

• Must utilize NYSED –approved curriculum

• Not eligible for Point / Insurance Reduction

• Must be taught in an approved facility



Basic Courses cont.

• Must notify course registration contractor at least 30 days prior to start of course

• Use current forms – NPO, NPS, NPC, DS960

• SBDI must be physically present at all times

Course Certificates

• Course certificates should be issued at the end of the course

• Certificates are the property of the drivers and attendants

• Advise them to maintain their certificates in a secure location

• Employers should keep copies, not the originals, for their driver and attendant files

The Secret of a Dynamic Basic Course

• DON’T teach all sections yourself!!

• Use other SBDIs, MIs, and guest speakers from your area

• Course facilitator SBDI should be present for all sessions to ensure continuity

Teaching the Driver Advanced Course

• Not mandatory• Under-utilized!• Designed for veteran drivers• Eligible for Point / Insurance

Reduction if taught in DMV-approved facility

• Minimum of 10 hours• Course forms and

notification procedures same as for Basic

• Team-teach it!



Conducting Refresher Training

• SBDI must teach, or directly supervise, refresher training

• At least 2 2-hour sessions are required annually for all drivers, attendants, and monitors

Conducting Pre-Service Training

• SBDI must provide “general supervision” of Pre-Service training; may approve a non-SBDI’s pre-service

• For drivers, use the 2010 NYSED curriculum

• Several attendant and monitor pre-service curricula are available across the state

• Pre-service must be completed prior to transporting students

• Not eligible for PIRP


Student Training

• 3 bus drills a year• First within the first 5 days of

school• Second November 1 to

December 30• Third March 1 and April 30• Content includes loading,

weather hazards, behavior, emergencies and seat belt use. (156.3)

SBDI Ethics

SBDIs must maintain the highest ethical standards. Providing school bus drivers, attendants, and monitors with the information and ideas they need to safely transport students is an extremely serious responsibility. Ignoring safety problems, compromising training programs, falsifying training records, or placing career or personal gain above student safety, are unacceptable.
