Masculinity

•Is it only Physical?–Ezekiel 22:30

•God gave man role of leadership–1 Timothy 2:11-15

“I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and

stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it;

but I found no one.”

“Roam to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, And look now and take note.

And seek in her open squares, If you can find a man, If there is one who does

justice, who seeks truth, Then I will pardon her.”

Jeremiah 5:1

“You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding

way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that

your prayers will not be hindered.”1 Peter 3:7

“Then to Adam He said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have

eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat from it'; Cursed is the ground because of

you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 "Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You

will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are

dust, And to dust you shall return.”

“But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his

household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

1 Timothy 5:8

“A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12 But I do not

allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then

Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell

into transgression. 15 But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity

with self-restraint.”

“For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church,

He Himself being the Savior of the body.”

“To the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he

will rule over you.” Genesis 3:16

“Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house,

and give the enemy no occasion for reproach;”

Masculinity•Men who had everything physically but were weaklings–Samson – Judges 14, 15, 16–Saul – 1 Samuel 10, 15–Absalom – 2 Samuel 14-18

•Physical Appearance not Everything–1 Timothy 4:7-8

“Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came as far as the vineyards of Timnah; and behold, a young lion came roaring toward him. 6 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, so that

he tore him as one tears a young goat though he had nothing in his hand; but he did not

tell his father or mother what he had done.”

“He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, so he reached out and took it and killed

a thousand men with it.”

“Now Samson lay until midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the city gate and the two posts and pulled

them up along with the bars; then he put them on his shoulders and carried them up to

the top of the mountain which is opposite Hebron.”

“For the lips of an adulteress drip honey And smoother than oil is her speech; 4 But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword. 5 Her feet go down to

death, Her steps take hold of Sheol. 6 She does not ponder the path of life; Her ways

are unstable, she does not know it.”

“So they ran and took him from there, and when he stood among the people, he was

taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see him whom the Lord has

chosen? Surely there is no one like him among all the people." So all the people shouted and said, "Long live the king!”

“Therefore they inquired further of the Lord, "Has the man come here yet?" So

the Lord said, "Behold, he is hiding himself by the baggage.”

“Samuel said, "Is it not true, though you were little in your own eyes, you were made the head of the tribes of Israel? And the Lord

anointed you king over Israel,”

“Now in all Israel was no one as handsome as Absalom, so highly praised; from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no defect in him. 26 When he cut the hair of his head (and it was at the end of every year that he cut it, for it was heavy on him so he

cut it), he weighed the hair of his head at 200 shekels by the king's weight.”

“But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand,

discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; 8 for bodily discipline is only of

little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present

life and also for the life to come.”

“but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to

others, I myself will not be disqualified.”1 Corinthians 9:27

Prove Yourself a Man!

•1 Kings 2:1-3•Men who showed Strength of Character–Joseph – Genesis 39–Daniel – Daniel 1–Moses – Exodus 2; Acts 7:20-22

•What made them different?

“As David's time to die drew near, he charged Solomon his son, saying, 2 "I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong,

therefore, and show yourself a man. 3 "Keep the charge of the Lord your God, to walk in

His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His

testimonies, according to what is written in the Law of Moses, that you may succeed in

all that you do and wherever you turn,”

“As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her

or be with her.” v.10

“She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" And he left his garment

in her hand and fled, and went outside.” v.12

“So Joseph's master took him and put him into the jail, the place where the

king's prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.” v.20

“It was at this time that Moses was born; and he was lovely in the sight of God, and he was nurtured three months in his father's home.

21 "And after he had been set outside, Pharaoh's daughter took him away and

nurtured him as her own son. 22 "Moses was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians,

and he was a man of power in words and deeds.”

“By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's

daughter, 25 choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to

enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 considering the reproach of Christ greater

riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left

Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen.”

“Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts

which wage war against the soul.”

Attitudes Toward the Body

•Victorian Attitude•Playboy Attitude•Businessman Attitude•Christian Attitude

–1 Corinthians 6:19,20

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is

in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a

price: therefore glorify God in your body.”

“I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:14

11

Are you the Master of Your Body?

•A mark of Maturity is self-mastery–1 Corinthians 9:24-27

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize?

Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who competes in the games

exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we

an imperishable. 26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27 but I discipline my

body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be

disqualified.”

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a

living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but

be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable

and perfect.”

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the

body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”

12

Self-Discipline

•Overeating•Alcohol•Drugs – 1 Corinthians 6:19,20

•Sex – Hebrews 13:4

•Tongue – James 3:2-12

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom

you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”

1 Corinthians 6:19,20

“Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”
