From the President Scott Walker

Abundance is not a word that we have heard many times this past year with these economic times. The fact is that our clients at Kingdom House rarely, if ever, have an abundance of anything good in their lives. Kingdom House comes into their lives to fill that void and supply them with a profusion of smiles, hope and services, all from a caring staff.

In the year just past, 2008, Kingdom House experienced several abundant situations, starting with a record number of clients served – 5,511 to be exact. Coinciding with a record number of clients, Pantry and Thrift Shop visits were up 47% and 53%, respectively. The Christmas Shop also saw an increase of participation of 32%. The abundance does not stop there,

however, as we also served a record 180 youth in summer camp.

All of this could not have been done without our wonderful staff. I wish I could say that we have an abundant staff, but in the non-profit world, that just does not happen. Lack of numbers is compensated for by a group of very dedicated and hardworking people who, through their efforts, make the lives of those served profoundly better. In 2008, we saw our Pre-School Director, Eileen

Immken, retire after 31 years. This has left Antwine Rook as our longest serving staff member with 20 years of service. The number of lives these two have impacted is hard to imagine. Staff would not stay that long if Kingdom House were not a special place.

The greatest area of abundance at Kingdom House is the opportune ability we have to continue touching lives. One definition of abundance refers to being “richly supplied.” I can promise that volunteering at Kingdom House will provide you with that supply, as you will, indeed, be “richly supplied” with the fulfillment of helping others achieve a better life.

We are called to be responsible for one another. By sharing in your abundance, you can fulfill that calling at Kingdom House each and every day. One of those extra special days is just around the corner during our Christmas Shop. Come and volunteer. It will be the best Christmas season of your life. I truly hope to see you there.

From the Director Thomas T Sanders FAITH and ABUNDANCE We plant in faith, God gives growth in abundance. As I write this, a garden thrives on the north end of our campus. It’s a green explosion: zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes ripen, a few have already been picked; small watermelons grow on a lush vine; pumpkin blossoms appear on another. Thyme, cilantro, basil, sage, parsley and other savories fill the herb garden. Just looking at it lifts the spirits.

Teacher Mama Fatou uses our garden in her nutrition and cooking class. In Camp FACT (Financial Awareness for Children and Teens) we learn that gardening is not only delicious, it’s economical. A garden extends the family food budget. Fresh food is the most economical and healthiest way to eat. Mama Fatou’s class conducted a taste experiment: fresh-picked garden tomatoes versus bought, mass-produced tomatoes. The scientific finding: “These garden tomatoes have TASTE!!!” The cooking smells make our mouths water. Reverend Karen Blank-Ewell, Daycare Director, teaches pre-schoolers: “Gardens and farms like this is where our food comes from before it appears in the store. Someone must plant, grow, pick all the vegetables we eat, and bring it to the market where we

get it.” Today the cook used green peppers from our garden in the pre-school lunch. We did not make our garden alone. The Senniger Powers LLC law firm, Glorious Gardens, Inc., Missouri Botanical Garden, neighborhood board member Minister Willie Williams, volunteers from Manchester United Methodist Church, Rolling Ridge Nursery, various Kingdom House staff, youth, volunteers, visiting mission teams and other board members have all contributed funds, materials, labor, or know-how. How rich is our community, how abundant our resources! "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground, and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he knows not how.” Mark 4:26-27. Each of us is a garden; in each of us seed, soil, sun, water, air, and the mystery of grace bring forth fruit of various kinds. Even now, we are blessed in abundance, and may be a blessing to others.
