Sunday, June 11, 2017 - Most Holy Trinity
LIGHT, POWER, AND FIERY HEAT: As the flame of a fire has three qualities, so there is one God in three Persons. How? A
flame is made up of brilliant light and red power and fiery heat. It has brilliant light that it may shine, and red power that it may endure,
and fiery heat that it may burn. Therefore, by the brilliant light understand the Father, Who with paternal love opens His brightness to
His faith; and by the red power, which is in the flame that it may be strong, understand the Son, Who took on a body born from a Virgin,
in which His divine wonders were shown; and by the fiery heat understand the Holy Spirit, Who burns ardently in the minds of the
faithful. But there is no flame seen where there is neither brilliant light nor red power nor fiery heat; and thus also where neither the
Father nor the Son nor the Holy Spirit is known God is not properly worshipped.
Therefore as these three qualities are found in one flame, so Three Persons must be understood in the Unity of the Divinity.
~St. Hildegard of Bingen
Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a German Benedictine abbess and foundress of monasteries, musician and composer, poet and
prophet, pharmacist and doctor. From childhood she experienced visions in which the Word of God —both in Scripture and nature —
were revealed to her. Hildegard was declared a Doctor of the Church in 2012.
TWO PARISHIONERS TO BE ORDAINED TO THE PERMANENT DIACONATE NEXT SATURDAY, JUNE 17TH: Eric
Maugans and Frank Perotti will be ordained to the Permanent Diaconate next Saturday, June 17th at 10am at St. Augustine’s Cathedral.
They have completed their four year special formation process for the Permanent Diaconate through the Diocesan Common Formation
Program. Our congratulations and welcome to them into the active ministry here at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish.
OUR PARISH DEACONS...AN APPRECIATION RECEPTION: Our parishioners are invited to a ‘thank you’ reception for our
parish deacons next weekend. After the 9am Mass next Sunday, June 18th, our parish deacons and their wives will be hosted to a
special appreciation reception in the Dining Room of the Parish Activity Center. On the occasion of welcoming our two new deacons, it
is most timely to acknowledge and express our deepest appreciation to our deacons for their very valued diaconal ministry here at Our
Mother of Sorrows Parish.
CHURCH DOORS BEING REFINISHED: Our first Three R's Capital Campaign project is refinishing the church doors. Three
wooden doors have been removed, one from each of the three main entrances, and replaced with temporary doors. It will take about two
weeks for the first set to be refinished, then the second set will be done. The project should be completed by the end of June. Please be
extra careful entering and exiting the church and your patience and understanding are appreciated. Our thanks to all who are
contributing to the 3 R’s capital fund making this and many upcoming projects possible. Special thanks to Jose Reyes, our Facilities
Manager, and Randy Samuel and Oscar Esquerra, members of our parish Building & Maintenance Commission for their assistance with
the doors project.
PETITIONS FOR LOURDES: I will be leaving the last days of June to do two weeks of ministry in Lourdes again this year as an
integral part of my vacation time. I would be happy to bring personal petitions on behalf of Parishioners to the shrine. Petition forms on
which you may list your petitions are available in front of the icon of Mary in the Church. Please complete your petition forms and
return them to the church no later than Sunday, June 25th.
PARISH OFFICE RECEPTIONIST POSITION OPEN: Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church is seeking an experienced office
receptionist. This is a 38.50 hour/week position (Monday through Friday, 10am - 5pm and Sunday, 8am to 2pm) that includes benefits.
The receptionist serves as the parish’s first point of contact with church members and the public, and performs a wide variety of office/
clerical support duties. The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter with a professional demeanor, and will possess a
positive attitude and excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. He or she must be able to maintain
confidentiality, remain productive with minimal supervision, and be able to work as part of a team. He or she must be detailed-oriented,
proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office applications and standard business practices. Experience with PDS or other database
management software is a plus. Qualified applicants with an interest in this position are referred to the job description posted on our
parish website. You may submit your résumé to Cindy Phillips at [email protected] or bring a copy into the Parish Office.
Please, no phone calls.
PARISH ST. VINCENT DE PAUL UPDATE: Mayola McCrary, president of St. Vincent de Paul Society, David Andrews, vice
president, and Don Wahl, treasurer, visited with me this past week and gave me a very positive update on the present activities on our
parish St. Vincent de Paul council. They presently have 35 active members, and on average have 40-50 individual families visit their
food pantry on a weekly basis. The St. Vincent de Paul parish food pantry is to the left of the main entrance of our parish hall and is
staffed by St. Vincent de Paul volunteers Monday through Friday from 9am to 12 noon, and on Saturday from 9am to 11:30am. For the
next several months, the Council is developing a home visitation plan to needy families.
On an upcoming weekend, our Vincentians will give a special update from the pulpit at announcement time. We will be soliciting
new members for staffing the pantry and for outreach through home visitation to needy families.
Our parish is very blessed with its active St. Vincent de Paul council. It is a source of great blessings on many individuals and
families who experience their compassionate and loving ministry. Parishioners who may have a desire to explore active membership
with our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society are encouraged to contact Mayola McCrary, president or David Andrews, vice president by
calling the parish number and the St. Vincent de Paul extension, #243.

June 11, 2017 - Most Holy Trinity John 3:16-18
God so loved the world.
Celebrating this feast of the Holy Trinity today
reminds us that God will always be beyond our human
understanding and beyond human control. There’s
something comforting in that. We want God to be all
powerful, all encompassing, eternal, and ever present.
In the Trinity an irrepressibly loving, creative
communion of persons animates the communion of life that
is our created existence. It is God, three in one love, who
acts in our cosmos. The Scriptures record people’s
experience of God’s presence in many ways.
When we proclaim Jesus’ life and ministry, we think
of both the Father who sent Jesus and the Spirit whom we
see actively at work in Jesus in His conception, and in the
work of bringing good news to the poor which the Spirit
impels Him to do. After the resurrection, Jesus is at God’s
right hand, sending the Spirit to the community on earth
who gather in His name.
Sometimes the Scriptures emphasize Spirit, sometimes
Father, sometimes Son, the incarnate Jesus. But it is
always God in the richness of all three Persons who is
acting. All of these images and stories bring us back to the
main truth Trinity Sunday celebrates – we have never seen
God, but we can trust that God is the compassionate,
liberating, loving God we have encountered through Jesus.
***What difference does how we image the Trinity make in
our lives?
ADDED TIDBIT… Greek theologians use the word
perichoresis (peri- in the word perimeter meaning all
around near; chores- means to dance around) in imaging
the Trinity as person-in-communion, who exists in a kind
of divine round dance in which no one person is superior or
inferior to the other. The three persons together form one
source of life, one source of our being.

Christian Education Christian Education Christian Education /// FormationFormationFormation DID YOU KNOW … The Trinity in Unity is no doubt a
mystery. The Church teaches that the two realities of
God’s “oneness” and “threeness” are not contradictory.
Rather, God is one Being in three Persons; within His
very essence, He is one community of love.

Saint of the Day: Today, June 11, is the memorial of
Barnabas. Barnabas, a Jew of Cyprus, comes as close as
anyone outside the twelve to being a full-fledged apostle.
He was closely associated with Saint Paul (he introduced
Paul to Peter and the other apostles) and served as a kind of
mediator between the former persecutor and the still
suspicious Jewish Christians.
Barnabas is spoken of simply as one who dedicated his life
to the Lord. He was a man “filled with the Holy Spirit and
faith, and thereby large numbers were added to the Lord.”
Even when he and Paul were expelled from Antioch in
Pisidia (in modern day Turkey), they were “filled with joy
and the Holy Spirit”.
